How to unlock the Just Another Bug Hunt achievement in Deep Rock Galactic - Definitive Guide
The best option for attempting this achievement is an elimination mission where you will guarantee at least two dreadnought eggs. There are now three different types of dreadnoughts you might face at at October 2021:
- The Twins: please note you have to kill both to count as killing one 'full' dreadnought; I believe the 30 second period only starts after the death of the second Twin
- Hiveguard
- Glyphid Dreadnought
As with so much of DRG, these fights are questions of efficiency: can you achieve your goal within the resources you have available to you? You'll need to ensure you have enough resources to resupply and heal between rounds of combat.
Be careful in watching some online videos about dreadnoughts - they used to be much easier to kill, so those videos won't be giving you a good idea of what to expect.
The Dreadnoughts
The Twins are widely thought of as the worst type of dreadnoughts to face - they are the fastest, there are two of them and they 'balance out' each other's health at certain points during the fight. I'm sure it is possible to get the achievement having spawned the Twins, but it's probably not the easiest path. Better to see what the first dreadnought you spawn is before deciding if you can attempt this achievement. If you kill one, destroying the other is comparatively easy, but you will have to be careful about avoiding damage to the surviving Twin while you are taking on the other dreadnought.
The Hiveguard has three phases: the 'summon' phase, where it's immune until you kill all accompanying Sentinels, the 'mobile' phase where it attacks you and only these glowing organs will take (yellow) damage, then the 'vulnerable' phase, where its abdomen opens up and you can do (red health) damage that actually matters). Armed with fireballs that can blow some pretty big holes in the ground and is no fun up close either. Fortunately it is easy to outrun.
The Glyphid Dreadnought has two phases: the 'armoured' phase, where you have to destroy the (yellow) armour health bar through attacks to the abdomen, and the 'vulnerable' phase, where you can do (red) health damage in hitting the abdomen. This dreadnought also spits fireballs, but they aren't as bad as the Hiveguard's. Getting cornered by it can be a worse experience though and it has some high damage area of effect (AOE) attacks around it when vulnerable.
Preparation
This is an achievement you are unlikely to receive until you've been playing DRG for a bit and perhaps have one or two promoted dwarves. You'll need your weapons powered up and maybe even some overclocks to make it workable given the amount of damage you'll need to do. Plus it helps a lot to be familiar with the dreadnoughts before even thinking about going for this achievement.
I soloed this with a Driller; a team will make some things easier (like giving individual dwarves more breathing room) but others harder (e.g. consumption of ammo and health resources, more health on the dreadnoughts).
Start the Elimination mission on Hazard 3 (Haz 3) since that's the minimum required difficulty level. There's no point making things harder for you.
Once you land, start scouting the map and where the eggs are. I'd recommend not popping the eggs until you are prepared.
What you want is:
- At least 160 nitra, perhaps 240 nitra in case things go bad
- One relatively flat space where you can fight
- A connecting tunnel to another relatively flat space where you can fight
Prep those fighting areas by clearing out the kind of things you can get trapped on, like crystals, plants and rocks.
My set-up had a 'cliff' above one of the areas that linked by connecting tunnel, so I cut paths into it for easier use. There's no joy in trying to run for your life from two dreadnoughts only to die to fall damage.
Put one supply drop on one side of one of your fighting areas. Go to your other fighting area and put the other supply drop there. These are your resupply areas.
Find any red sugar in those areas and knock them to the ground if they are on the ceiling / on a high wall. You'll want to be able to access this health quickly.
Make sure you are at full health and full-enough ammo before you start.
Tactics
Once you pop a dreadnought egg you'll see what you are up against.
Whenever a dreadnought has grey health bars, they are invulnerable to damage, so don't bother shooting them. This will generally be when they hatch and when they are moving back to their starting phase (or health balancing if it's the Twins).
If you are going for this achievement (i.e. the first dreadnought you get doesn't worry you), spend time working down a quarter or so on the first dreadnought's red health. Once you are comfortable with how the fight's going, run down the connecting tunnel to your other fighting area. While you have time and before the dreadnought catches up, refill ammo or regain health depending on what you need. I'd suggest only going for ammo if you are down to about a third of your full capacity. Use your full kit as appropriate - primary, secondary weapons, grenades, deployables (e.g. Engineer turrets, Driller satchel charges).
If things are under control, pop the second dreadnought. You're now going to spend your time running around a fight area chased by dreadnoughts and then escaping through your connecting tunnel to the other fighting space when you need to heal up, let your shield recharge or if you need ammo. Kite the dreadnoughts between your fight areas as often as you need so you can get the necessary breathing space (although you may end up running into other bugs, so try to avoid being too surprised by that).
The aim is to work down the dreadnoughts' (red) health bar so that they are roughly even in their decline during the fight. That said, if the opportunity comes to really dump damage into one dreadnought, do it, provided there is no risk of actually killing that dreadnought while the other one is too healthy to kill within 30 seconds.
Ideally you'll want to work both dreadnoughts down to 10% or 15% red health, let them go back through their invulnerable phase back to armoured, then work their yellow armour bars down low; if it it the Twins just kill one then get the other one down low. (This is why it's good to have another space to fight in - you can reposition and refocus on the dreadnought that's got the most health.) Consider if you need to resupply your ammo before the final fight - it's no good to run dry with a key weapon in this critical section.
Please note that dreadnoughts will automatically go invulnerable / exit their vulnerable state if you do too much damage during one phase. This is why you'll want to work down their (red) health bars low first.
With everything down low for the dreadnoughts, aim to break the (yellow) armour and pour your damage (if they are close together, AOE attacks work very well) into decimating the last sections of (red) health. You'll want to do it at the same time when they are close together to avoid you killing one dreadnought only for the other one to find time to go back to invulnerable then rearmoured (or in the Hiveguard's case, invulnerable with Sentinels, then armoured).
Because the Hiveguard arguably has the longest time to work through its phases, I'd suggest killing that first, then the Glyphid Dreadnought / Twin.
If you can achieve both kills in 30 seconds, the achievement should pop.

Me and a couple of friends managed to complete this just fine; however, only the host actually got the achievement. Kinda disappointing but not entirely unexpected.

Yeah only the host gets it

First, this is for killing two Dreadnoughts within 30 seconds of each other since it is not completely clear.
If you get this achievement, you will also get this:
Dreadnoughts can randomly spawn in any mission, but the easiest way to find multiple is to do an Extermination mission (crosshair icon) with a goal of killing at least 2. This can be done with any number of players, but more makes it easier. What I did was find two eggs, how to get from one to the other, and a good open area to fight in (this could be where one of the eggs is, but could be anywhere on the map if you don't mind waiting for the Dreadnoughts to make their way over). Spawn one of the dreadnoughts, run over to the second, spawn that one, and make your way to your fighting area. Then it's just a matter of damaging both to low health and making sure that the second Dreadnought dies within 30 seconds of the first one dying.
Note: It is probably best to not use Engineer sentries during this as they might kill a Dreadnought before both are in a low health state. If you do try to use any, make sure to recall them as the end of the fight nears. As far as weapons, these are the ones I have found to be most useful in Dreadnought fights:
Gunner: Minigun with armor piercing upgrade
Driller: Flamethrower
Engineer: Breach Cutter
Scout: Shotgun
If you get this achievement, you will also get this:

Can we get an update for this the new variants make this achievement much harder to get?

Got lucky and got a regular dread and thre hiveguard and both my teammates got it but I didn't. Stupid glitchy ass game. And yes I did put dmg on both dreadnoughts so I know that wasn't the issue.
