How to unlock the Great Ball of Fire achievement in Defense Grid 2 - Definitive Guide

You first unlock the Meteor Tower during level 04.
One of the easiest ways I have found grind these types of achievements (if its for a tower type you don't use) would be to play level 12 on Practice on Easy (I believe you can play any level at any time you want, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.)
Even on Story Mode, you can essentially beat the level with just the 8 tower spots around the core housing, and maybe one tower blocking the quickest route.
I build 3 cannons along the side closest to the ship, a concussion on the single spot near this, a temporal on the spot across the road, and then at least one tesla among the other 3 spots.
When the level is nearing its end (1-2 waves left) just fill as many spaces as possible with the tower you are working on.
I was able to get at least 50 of the tower I was working on on any particular run (and that was on Story Mode - less resources)

You can do something similar on any level when you finish as long as you remember. This is just for if you are solely trying to grind out this achievement.

As with all other achievements in this game, this achievement will not unlock until you finish the level.

I cant unlock any of these achievements that are supposed to track (with a percentage complete) as they do not track beyond where they are now.

That happens a lot in this game where achievements just stop at a certain percentage. I can't remember if they're actually still tracking in the background or not since it's been so long since I played.

im at "74%" on this one and have built many in practice mode and story and it doesn't move or unlock. I'll have to keep trying.

You made it clear we must finish the level to unlock the achievement, however, you did not clarify if we must win the level for the numbers of uses of a particular tower to count.
Can anyone answer this?

Meteor towers are unlocked midway through the game and deal damage by shooting meteor strikes onto enemies from a far distance. This trophy is cumulative, so just build 100 of these towers over the course of the game to obtain it.

You will most likely obtain this trophy through natural play, but if you don’t you can get this fast and easy by playing missions in training mode. Build as many boost towers as you can right off the bat and just let the mission run out. You don’t actually have to win the mission for the towers to count. That trophy itself won’t pop until the mission is over.

From the Tower Encyclopedia: The Meteor tower targets aliens at very long range. It fires a superheated fireball that inflicts heavy area damage on impact. The meteor tower can't target units close to it, but it has the longest range of any tower make it an ideal second row tower. It is less effective against fast aliens.

This achievement requires that you build 100 Meteor towers across all of your games. Your particular playing style may mean that this unlocks naturally without any particular effort. However, if you don't tend to use Meteor towers, or simply want it to unlock more promptly, you can play Chapter 19 in Practice mode on easy and play only Meteor towers. You can easily place 100 towers on this map and unlock the achievement at the end of the game, win or lose.
