How to unlock the Master Strategist achievement in Defense Grid 2 - Definitive Guide

Here is what I can confirm about the achievement.

Dg coordinated defense medals do not count towards the achievement.
Co op doubles medals do count towards the achievement.
The achievement counts medals in groups meaning you have to get all of your gold medals in the same type and difficulty. For example if you have 100 gold medals total but 2 were earned on easy and the rest were on normal the achievement registers that as only 98 golds. The same goes for the three types such as open or competitive.
Also you can not get multiple golds on the same exact mission they will not stack.
All modes excluding Dg coordinated defense golds do count towards the achievement.

I received my achievement directly after completing my 100th gold medal according to the rules above all of which were done on normal difficulty and open type.

With all of that said... there are still some things that I can not confirm myself, they are:
if any golds under normal difficulty count
if and how same screen co op affects the achievement
I have read that if someone else's account plays the game on the same xbox it uses the same save file and thus any new golds acquired using the other account will not be registered towards the achievement.

I would suggest to anyone that reads this to only play normal difficulty

I hope this helps! If you have any ideas on how to improve this guide please comment below!

I got it today by earning 111 gold medals. I can affirm that you have to do them in one difficulty and I don't think coop medals count for this achievement.

I have heard people say that if you use someone else's account to gain golds those will not count even though it is on the same save file. If that's not the case I would make sure they are all on the same type. Also I'm hearing people saying that easy May not count but no one that I know has confirmed this yet... I wish I had more concrete answers. I did all of mine on normal so I would suggest if you can't find any other answer to try normal difficulty.

Thanks for clearing that up, explains why it hasn't unlocked for me. Wish that devs would learn to make proper description for their achievements. I'm not going to do dozens of missions again, so I'm skipping out on this one.

I did all story missions on easy, got gold and didn't get the 3 achievements for doing all the story missions and did them all again on easy again and got them.

I did missions on multiple difficulties including practice twice, i just kept doing missions until the 100 golds finally unlocked.

I did 120+ golds on normal difficulty/open, including the story achievements (which popped with no issue) and didn't get this achievement. I started from the beginning on easy/open and it popped exactly at my 100th medal. Something is definitely not counting, but I'm not sure what or why none of my normal medals counted but playing on easy worked flawlessly. I also had 100 golds on normal before doing any kind of co-op, and am the only gamertag to play the game on my X1, so neither of those should have been a factor.

Okay well that is good news that easy does count I keep hearing people say that they get the achievement after redoing some missions. I just wish we knew what was causing these missions to not register towards the achievement I can't find any answers as to what might be causing this. But it does seem that it is not just random. If anyone finds more information please let us know.

Just got this after collecting 138 Golds on the same type and difficulty (Open, Easy). Only re-did a couple of missions, just to see if it made any difference, it didn't. Also tried changing difficulty for a couple of missions and signing in and out of my profile; nothing happened, so I carried on plugging away at the different missions on Open, Easy and it eventually popped. Good luck!

So achievements aren't glitched even though I've completed the requirements to unlock them. So what would you call them? Achievements that don't work right? Achievement that might unlock? The achievement is glitched, it just didn't glitch for you.

Patch today should have fixed this. Coordinated defense DOES count. Everything needs to be done on the same difficulty and the same type (easy/open for instance). That's what they said on the official forums. You do 100 easy/open gold medals, it'll unlock. They weren't sure if it would unlock retroactively or not.

Just to add more info. I just hit 100 SP golds today according to the TA tracker. I have never even started a DG Coordinated Defense mission, any multiplayer or touched the difficultly (100% of medals are on Easy). Its late and I was sad when I hit 100 and nothing popped so thought I'd drop by and add my tale to the pile here. Guess I'll try to do some more levels tomorrow maybe.

I counted all of my gold medals SP open on easy not including DG coordinated and I got to 95. but on the TA website it says 100. presumably ive done the same mission a couple of times and got gold and TA have still tracked it. so it might be worth people counting there gold medals using the criteria stated in the guide

in theory I need 5 golds to get to 100 which I will get in the next couple of days

You don't have to delete your save and restart. I just got it tonight (308 gold medals in). I made the foolish mistake of starting up the game to see if they'd patched it, not play the game and exit which reset your gold medals to zero prior to the patch. Since they've patched it, it works fine.

Thanks Armante,

I was getting a little frustrated. If I like a map I play it on easy thru hard. I like to play competitive/competitive sell. Knew I had over 100 combined. I came on to look to see if it was glitched. Read your post and went back to playing just easy open and it popped. So a lot of "wasted" time. Thanks again for taking the time to post.

OK!! I can confirm, you can get gold medals on any difficulty, you just can't get gold medals multiple times on the same mission on different difficulties!! Please add to your solution.... I.e. You can't beat Mission 1--Fixed Resources--Easy and then beat Mission 1--Fixed Resources--Medium and have those both count. Only one will count!

The achievement pop at 500%

By Papy Maxouille on 10 May 2016 17:47
I also can confirm that:

-Can be done on easy
-Only counts one difficulty's Gold
-DG Coordinated counts

Game hub progress just adds every gold, so i wouldn't advice using that as a source of progress. Count them yourself in-game. According to the hub i had 104 gold when it popped for me.

DG Coordinated Defenses did not count for me, i played 101 levels on easy, and 1 of them was DG Coordinated Defenses, so mine popped on finishing level 101. game is very easy on easy, you can gold almost every level with just using Guns.

Very simply--not DG Coordinated Defense missions.
And, very simply--you can do any and all missions, but if you do the same exact mission on a different difficulty it won't count.
Always change missions, not difficulty to make them all count.

Zacca is correct. I unfortunately grinded many sessions of the first mission and prologue before reading this thread...

Play the different versions on the left-most box. Leave the other two boxes alone. Don't repeat the same mission without changing anything in the left box-it won't count.

What I can understand is that in order for the game to "record" your gold medal you need to press cn_B to exit and start a new mission. If you try over and over again a single mission without going back to the menu it just wont unlock.

I did over 70 times the same mission without going back to the main menu. Now I have over 150 gold medals but it is still locked.

Ugh, I'm at over 102 gold medals on easy/open and no achievement. I've manually counted them twice just to be sure. They really should've just fixed this so that every single gold counts and once the stupid tracker says 100 you get the achievement. I don't know if it's even worth to keep going at this point.

Edit: so apparently I had unlocked this sometime last night when I wasn't even online. I guess going for over 100 medals was the right thing to do lol

It popped today! I had neglected to get level 20 Gold. It would be wise to get Gold on all 20 story sub-chapters before concluding that the achievement has glitched on you. Do the 20 first on Easy if you like. Then do the other things like No Guns, Fully Loaded and Focal point to make up the other 80 Golds. Worked fine.

OK, apparently XBL was having issues updating games and keeping track of things. GoW4 wasn't giving me ribbons or achievements either. After they fixed the issue and I cold booted my XB1, this achievement popped and I went from 93 to 119 immediately. I KNEW i was doing it right.

Somehow, my solitary DG Coordinated Defense medal counted. I excluded it when I was manually counting, and was hoping to work up to 99 gold medals before I load it the next day to continue my streak, and the achievement unlocked. I re-counted, and I only have 99 non-DG Coordinated medals. Oh well.

I can 100% confirm that EVERY MEDAL count but for every level all medals can only be obtained ONCE. E.g. Story mission level 1 is ONE medal no mater what difficulty you use. You need 100 UNIQUE medals. not the difficulty is the problem here it is the "Gametype" Story, No Red Towers and so on.

I just got this with 105 gold medals in the stats tracker. I'm not sure which ones counted and which didn't. I hand-re-counted them several times after the achievement should have popped.

I only had one DG medal, but about 10 medals on practice mode. Thinking it might be the practice mode medals, I decided to play through at least enough to outweigh those.

I started playing Grinder and Super Grinder. They're long, but fairly mindless and easy to get on the first try. After the 5th extra game - on stage 12 - the achievement popped. It just doesn't make sense, so maybe this one is just buggy?

i just completed this today and that completes all 65 achievements. i counted up all of my gold medals and i had 99 not counting the 3 DG coordinated defense golds that i completed in missions 1,2,3. So my overall gold count was 102 when it popped. 102 included the prologue mission too so maybe that one doesn't count and if that is true then I did 101 different gold missions.

I played the story first and then went back and started playing everything in each mission in order. When I got to mission 4, I started skipping the DG coordinated defense missions but did all the rest.

Everything was done on easy and open.

NOTE: I had a terrible time getting the 100 booster achievement to pop so i played some missions over and over after I completed the 20 story missions.

According to trueachievements stats;
89,265 = total aliens destroyed (SP)
114 = total gold medals earned (SP)
66,842,300 = total tower damage done (SP)

I do not know if this info helps but I thought i would post it since so many people are having problems with this cheevo. hopefully they will get it patched and the future players will not have this same problem.

Here's a description of the problem they patched from the Hidden Path forums:

The bug that was fixed was one where if the player launched Defense Grid 2, but did not play any levels before quitting, the game would cause certain stats to be reset, including how many gold medals you had earned. The time when you last launched the game and didn'?t play a level would impact how many gold medals you must get to get master strategist. Going forward, your medal count will not be reset if you enter the game but do not play a level.

I can confirm game counted to achivement GoldMedals only on one difficulty.
Easy way to do is makeing:

1. All story mission (20 gold)
2. Playing rest mission on planets 1-10.

It's works on easy difficuty as well.
Xbox and Smart glass counting and showing every gold witch you earn.
So the best option if youdon't want count your medals manualy is doing this first and after that doing rest eg. multiplayer.

I just completed this today. It got the achievement with 103 Gold Medals, on easy. I had 3 DG Coordinated Defenses, and the achievement did not unlock until getting to 103. I cannot say specifically that DGCD did not count for me, but the evidence truly seems to indicate that they did not.

I did the prologue. I did story and practice on every level.

Smartglass tracker has me at 123 gold medals. (I had started on Normal, but switched to Easy)

My Gold Medal Breakdown by Level (Total count in parenthesis):
Prologue - 1 (1)
Threshold - 10 (11) - Includes DG CD
Supply Ad Demand - 10 (21) - Includes DG CD
Suspension - 11 (32) - Includes DG CD
Overlook - 9 (41)
Barrage - 8 (49)
Rapid Collapse - 8 (57)
Split Decision - 5 (62)
Boiling Point - 9 (71)
Precipice - 7 (78)
Breach - 2 (80)
Sandstorm - 4 (84)
Incursion - 3 (87)
Deep End - 2 (89)
Surface Tension - 2 (91)
Refuge - 2 (93)
Double Take - 2 (95)
Scarce Resources - 2 (97)
Checks and Balances - 2 (99)
Out of Control - 2 (101)
Backlash - 2 (103)

The guide should really explain the basics of the scoring system.

You get points when a alien dies depending on two factors, how much unspent resources you have and the sell value of any towers built. which is less then you bought it for so spend as little as possible, secondly how many cores you have left in the housing.

You don't seem to score any multiplier when killing using the cursor, so only damage with the cursor let the towers do the killing. And speeding up the game with RB cause towers to do slightly less damage compare to run at normal speed, so you have to spend some more resources if your speed running it. it's especially noticeable with fast aliens.

if you know this it's very easy to get gold on any level on any challenge. Simply build green towers because they are cheap and makes most damage compare to resource usage. If you seem to have underestimated a wave no problem, just press LB and spend some more resources this try. (you start about a wave back giving you time to adapt your tactics)

this way you can beat the gold easily usually with a 25% margin.

Always put boost towers beneath your tower, make sure you use them to create a long killing floor which lead the enemy near the towers over and over again to maximize every towers damage potential. When running the "limited towers" challenge you have to put a tower over the boost tower or you will auto sell them and waste resources when building again elsewhere.

The "no power" challenge is all about keeping the towers in a 5x5 square around the cursor. so in this case your bound to need to upgrade.

in the end it will be more or less running the same tactics about 10 times in a row and move to the next level. The challenges changes so little that the same tactics is applicable on all except for the "no power" one which require you to focus on a single defensive spot

Play everything on the same difficulty and use smartglass to keep track. Otherwise you still need to count them by hand.

The App Shows You how many gold medals you have earn in the game. But for some reason. If you play some games again the App count you have 2, but for the achievements it isn't good cause only higher difficulty's and other game modes you've never played before count's towards the achievement.

This achievement will take some time, but will also help you complete "10 Items No Less" and "Xenocide". In order for you to get this, all medals must be earned on the same type (I stayed on open) and difficulty (I did easy). Every medal must be earned on a different mode (story, grinder, practice, etc.) for them to count towards the achievement. I recommend not even bothering with split screen or multiplayer (except for achievements containing those modes) as those medals also don't count I believe. The prologue also does not count.

I would recommend starting by either completing every mission on practice or story, and then doing it on the other one after completing on of those. This will earn you 40 of your 100 medals straight away. (Practice because it's the easiest mode) After this, I'd recommend going back to missions you liked/found easy and doing every mode (except the multiplayer ones) on them. The mission I found easy were 1, 2, 3, 4, 11, 13, 14, 17, 18 and 19. If you would like to do this achievement the fastest, then the first missions are the way to go because they have less waves. If you would like to complete "10 Items No Less" as fast as possible while still making progress on this achievement, I'd recommend doing a lot of grinder/super grinders because from my experience they give you items more often.

You can check your progress on the game hub. The only reason you shouldn't get the achievement exactly on 100 is because you got a gold medal on a mode in a mission twice.

All must be done on same settings, I used: OPEN > EASY.
- Use Gun Turrets ONLY, for the most part for best chance at gold
- Manually count your gold medals! The achievements app combines all golds from all difficulties/types so it will give you a higher number than you most likely have, once I manually counted them I realized I still needed 8 Gold medals, where the achievements stats page told me I had 104 golds at the time..

Easiest Modes:
+ Practice
+ Fixed Resources
+ Limited Towers
+ Fully Loaded
+ Focal Point

- DG Coordinated Defence Missions DO COUNT

Getting 100 gold medals can be a grind, but I figured out that the "Fixed Resources" game mode is one of the easier to complete. You can start building red towers almost immediately, and if you build many red meteor towers you should have no problem killing most enemies quickly. The game types where you have to manually place your cursor near the towers are much harder; avoid those if you can.

Also, I can confirm that all the gold medals have to be done on the same difficulty and game type. I did all mine on Normal and Open. If you have any questions feel free to message me.

Here's a YouTube playlist made by JogandoEAndando with videos on how to beat EVERY mission on EVERY mode on NORMAL difficulty. I've used it from A to Z to beat the game (50hrs) and each guide is perfect. Very nice work from him, congrats!

I managed to obtain this achievement tonight. I played everything on easy and open. I used the smart glass and when at the main menu of the game, went to the right and clicked achievements, the medal counts are off on both. I had to manually count each gold medal I had, then I had to grab one extra for the achievement to unlock. I obtained 101 before it popped. Not so much a solution but a helpful piece of advice. Good luck guys!

Finally unlocked this one today. I made the mistake of trying to grind the one mission over and over and count the golds on the Smart Glass app - that's incorrect.

You need to gather 100 medals from the missions across different modes WITH NO REPEATS.

I did them all on Easy and in Open.

Then I'd go through each Mission and do each Mode in turn, getting a gold medal ONCE for EACH MODE

Do 100 of these and you'll complete the achievement.

Each mission has about 10 different modes for each, so you'll have this achievement complete around Mission 10 or 11 assuming you get a gold for each mode that each mission offers.

Good luck!

For this achievement you need to earn a gold medal on 100 (or more) map and mode combinations. There are more than 200 in the game and the medals are displayed on the mission select screen, so it is easy enough to see which ones you have already earned gold in. It is fortunate that there are so many, because this achievement often does not unlock after 100 golds. If it doesn't, keep earning golds and it will eventually unlock, although it may be 180+ before it does so.

You will need 100 gold medals across all the maps, which works out to an average of five golds per map (the Prologue can only be played in Story mode). You will need to get gold on each map in Story mode for Alien Tears, leaving 79 remaining. The five easiest modes are:

  • Practice (large initial starting resources and much faster generation of resources in-game)
  • Grinder (only opponents are walkers, and many maps can be won with 4-6 Concussion towers and a Temporal tower)
  • Super Grinder (lots of opponents, but strung out nicely and lots of time to build defenses in depth)
  • Out of Bullets (no Cannon or Gun towers, so use Lasers and Concussion towers instead)
  • Fixed Resources (you get all your resources at the start of the game)

There are only 20 missions and a prologue in the game and thus if you’ve followed the above roadmap. you’ll only have 21 gold medals after finishing the story campaign. For this trophy however, you’ll need a total of a 100 gold medals. Replaying the story mode on other difficulties will not give you extra medals. Instead, you’re going to have to play the missions in different challenge modes to get unique gold medals.

With the exception of the prologue, every mission in this game can be played in a number of different challenge modes. These modes come with modifiers that will, in most cases, limit your abilities compared to the regular story mode missions. To select a different mode, first select the mission you want to play. In the following pop up screen, the first mode will always be the story mode, but the other available modes can be found right under the story mode. The available modes are as follows:

  • Story
  • DG Coordinated Defense – Complete the mission with a co-op partner.
  • Grinder – Survive 100 waves of walker enemies.
  • Super Grinder – Survive 100 waves of a variety of different enemies.
  • Fixed Resources – Complete the mission with a set number of resources.
  • Power Outage - Only towers in the vicinity of your cursor work and the cursor itself does damage.
  • Focal Point – Deal additional damage by hovering your cursor over enemies.
  • No Red Towers – Complete the mission without the ability to fully upgrade your towers.
  • Limited Towers – Complete the missions with a set maximum amount of towers.
  • Fully Loaded – All towers and upgrades are available.
  • Frozen Core – Cores you lose during the mission won’t return to the base.
  • Out of bullets – Gun and cannon towers aren’t available.
  • Training – Start with a high amount of resources and weaker enemies.

Note that not every mode is available in every mission. You can check your progress only by counting the number of missions you have a medal on. The gold medal symbols can be found in the mission select menu itself.

You need to complete 100 missions on the same difficulty.

Complexity is not nonsense. Counts 1 medal for 1 challenge or campaign mission. Different difficulties do not stack, which means there is no point in changing it (except to practice on the elite for 100% tower drop, see the tip below).

Regarding the various difficulties - nonsense. In the end, even at the 130th medal, I didn’t get a trophy. I’m not the only one; there are hundreds of indignant people on Western forums. You need to complete tasks strictly on one difficulty and not go into any Competition Mode, otherwise you will lose a huge amount of time. I had to play almost 10 extra hours because of this.

I had enough medals from 11 levels to get everything I needed. Do grinding last, because it is the longest of all modes. The priority modes are Practice, Tower Limitation, and Limited Resources, as they are the fastest to complete. If you complete them all, then along with the story campaign you will receive 100 gold medals. Don’t rush to rejoice, because the trophy may not appear right away, so you will have to play a few more medals to be sure to get the trophy.

Go through all the missions on easy, because you will get tired of complying with the conditions in the battle for medals. Don’t put a lot of guns, just put them on reinforcements and improve the towers and, if possible, reinforcements. Otherwise, there is a chance in some missions not to get gold, even if everyone was killed and all the crystals were saved
