How to unlock the Master Strategist achievement in Defense Grid 2 - Definitive Guide
Dg coordinated defense medals do not count towards the achievement.
Co op doubles medals do count towards the achievement.
The achievement counts medals in groups meaning you have to get all of your gold medals in the same type and difficulty. For example if you have 100 gold medals total but 2 were earned on easy and the rest were on normal the achievement registers that as only 98 golds. The same goes for the three types such as open or competitive.
Also you can not get multiple golds on the same exact mission they will not stack.
All modes excluding Dg coordinated defense golds do count towards the achievement.
I received my achievement directly after completing my 100th gold medal according to the rules above all of which were done on normal difficulty and open type.
With all of that said... there are still some things that I can not confirm myself, they are:
if any golds under normal difficulty count
if and how same screen co op affects the achievement
I have read that if someone else's account plays the game on the same xbox it uses the same save file and thus any new golds acquired using the other account will not be registered towards the achievement.
I would suggest to anyone that reads this to only play normal difficulty
I hope this helps! If you have any ideas on how to improve this guide please comment below!
I would recommend starting by either completing every mission on practice or story, and then doing it on the other one after completing on of those. This will earn you 40 of your 100 medals straight away. (Practice because it's the easiest mode) After this, I'd recommend going back to missions you liked/found easy and doing every mode (except the multiplayer ones) on them. The mission I found easy were 1, 2, 3, 4, 11, 13, 14, 17, 18 and 19. If you would like to do this achievement the fastest, then the first missions are the way to go because they have less waves. If you would like to complete "10 Items No Less" as fast as possible while still making progress on this achievement, I'd recommend doing a lot of grinder/super grinders because from my experience they give you items more often.
You can check your progress on the game hub. The only reason you shouldn't get the achievement exactly on 100 is because you got a gold medal on a mode in a mission twice.
- Use Gun Turrets ONLY, for the most part for best chance at gold
- Manually count your gold medals! The achievements app combines all golds from all difficulties/types so it will give you a higher number than you most likely have, once I manually counted them I realized I still needed 8 Gold medals, where the achievements stats page told me I had 104 golds at the time..
Easiest Modes:
+ Practice
+ Fixed Resources
+ Limited Towers
+ Fully Loaded
+ Focal Point
- DG Coordinated Defence Missions DO COUNT
Also, I can confirm that all the gold medals have to be done on the same difficulty and game type. I did all mine on Normal and Open. If you have any questions feel free to message me.

You need to gather 100 medals from the missions across different modes WITH NO REPEATS.
I did them all on Easy and in Open.
Then I'd go through each Mission and do each Mode in turn, getting a gold medal ONCE for EACH MODE
Do 100 of these and you'll complete the achievement.
Each mission has about 10 different modes for each, so you'll have this achievement complete around Mission 10 or 11 assuming you get a gold for each mode that each mission offers.
Good luck!
For this achievement you need to earn a gold medal on 100 (or more) map and mode combinations. There are more than 200 in the game and the medals are displayed on the mission select screen, so it is easy enough to see which ones you have already earned gold in. It is fortunate that there are so many, because this achievement often does not unlock after 100 golds. If it doesn't, keep earning golds and it will eventually unlock, although it may be 180+ before it does so.
You will need 100 gold medals across all the maps, which works out to an average of five golds per map (the Prologue can only be played in Story mode). You will need to get gold on each map in Story mode for Alien Tears, leaving 79 remaining. The five easiest modes are:
- Practice (large initial starting resources and much faster generation of resources in-game)
- Grinder (only opponents are walkers, and many maps can be won with 4-6 Concussion towers and a Temporal tower)
- Super Grinder (lots of opponents, but strung out nicely and lots of time to build defenses in depth)
- Out of Bullets (no Cannon or Gun towers, so use Lasers and Concussion towers instead)
- Fixed Resources (you get all your resources at the start of the game)
There are only 20 missions and a prologue in the game and thus if you’ve followed the above roadmap. you’ll only have 21 gold medals after finishing the story campaign. For this trophy however, you’ll need a total of a 100 gold medals. Replaying the story mode on other difficulties will not give you extra medals. Instead, you’re going to have to play the missions in different challenge modes to get unique gold medals.
With the exception of the prologue, every mission in this game can be played in a number of different challenge modes. These modes come with modifiers that will, in most cases, limit your abilities compared to the regular story mode missions. To select a different mode, first select the mission you want to play. In the following pop up screen, the first mode will always be the story mode, but the other available modes can be found right under the story mode. The available modes are as follows:
- Story
- DG Coordinated Defense – Complete the mission with a co-op partner.
- Grinder – Survive 100 waves of walker enemies.
- Super Grinder – Survive 100 waves of a variety of different enemies.
- Fixed Resources – Complete the mission with a set number of resources.
- Power Outage - Only towers in the vicinity of your cursor work and the cursor itself does damage.
- Focal Point – Deal additional damage by hovering your cursor over enemies.
- No Red Towers – Complete the mission without the ability to fully upgrade your towers.
- Limited Towers – Complete the missions with a set maximum amount of towers.
- Fully Loaded – All towers and upgrades are available.
- Frozen Core – Cores you lose during the mission won’t return to the base.
- Out of bullets – Gun and cannon towers aren’t available.
- Training – Start with a high amount of resources and weaker enemies.
Note that not every mode is available in every mission. You can check your progress only by counting the number of missions you have a medal on. The gold medal symbols can be found in the mission select menu itself.
I had enough medals from 11 levels to get everything I needed. Do grinding last, because it is the longest of all modes. The priority modes are Practice, Tower Limitation, and Limited Resources, as they are the fastest to complete. If you complete them all, then along with the story campaign you will receive 100 gold medals. Don’t rush to rejoice, because the trophy may not appear right away, so you will have to play a few more medals to be sure to get the trophy.
