How to unlock the Arkhunting Safari achievement in Defiance Free to Play - Definitive Guide
A "Major Arkfall" is a server wide event that randomly happens, a large red circle will appear on the map with 5-6 small red icons inside, players must travel to each one and either protect or destroy a crystal, and then finally move onto a boss, these typically attract large crowds of players so you can expect help, however the more players means tougher enemies.
"Minor Arkfalls" are the little red icons that appear with no huge red circle surrounding it, just watch out for the huge red circles on the map, is possible to solo it but might take a bit longer and require a lot of leveling up.
Depending on the type of Arkfall event it is there are different objectives, there is always a crystal that you typically need to blow up or just survive waves of enemies (not actually defending the crystal), sometimes you can kill Raiders with rocket launchers and then use it to damage the crystal, or wait for a little bug to bite it and open up a weak spot or shooting explosive barrels set up by enemy engineers. You can also just shoot it but obviously critical hits take it down quicker, and there is a time limit.
Servers are apparently region locked so as long as you play during peak hours and not 5 in the morning the "Major Arkfalls" should attract a large crowd and not be too difficult to handle, just try to help as much as you can to make it quicker.
After the minor crystals are cleared out of the "Major Arkfall" area, one final icon will appear which is the boss, the timer resets to 20 minutes so you get plenty of time, there are a few different types of bosses, just shoot the weak spots that glow orange and stick out, if the boss is hiding inside sometimes you need to kill the largest enemy that appears before he comes out again, always focus on the largest enemy that appears.
Edit: As noted in the comments by Onza a recent patch made these events rarer, before there were roughly 3-5 an hour, now its far less.

Do you have to do any work, or just be at the arkfall?
BTW, according to release notes for patch 1.022, "Reduced the spawn rate of Major Arkfalls to fall in line with the overall goal ratio between Major and Minor Arkfalls.", so expect to wait longer. Link: Patch 1.022 Arrives for Defiance

I played a ton near release day, had many times where the servers went down for maintenance and such, and large update files so first time booting it up do it while you sleep or something it took a long time.
Other than that i would say its safe to play. I got to roughly 1300 ego rating out of 5000 max i think it is, and in terms of bugs i came across barely any. Same with games like Skyrim/Fallout etc, lots of people report bugs and such but the people who don't experience bugs don't go online to say that, they're too busy playing.
Unless they recently broke the entire game it should at least play lol.

UNOBTAINABLE DUE TO SERVER CLOSURE
Arkfalls are random events that occur all over the map. Major Arkfalls show up the map as a huge red circle, with multiple smaller red circles and red Arkfall icons in it. Major Arkfall consist of multiple minor Arkfalls and a boss at the end. You’ll need to kill waves of enemies or destroy the crystals (see the Arkhunting trophy for more info). All these minor Arkfalls have to be destroyed within the time limit. Once they're destroyed, the timer will refresh for the boss battle. The boss entirely depends on what sort of enemies you have been battling. However, all these bosses have 1 thing in common, they have visible critical spots. Your EGO Implant will also give you some hints on how to defeat the boss.
While you probably want quite some people for a Major Arkfall, though if a lot of people (30+) will show up, the Arkfall will become much more difficult. If you don't feel like completing 10 of them, you can go to a Major Arkfall and do some damage. Even if you leave the Arkfall area, if they complete it, you'll also gain credit. Don't expect any good rewards though.
If you want to check your progress, press , hold and go to Goals. Select Season One, Arkfalls, Ark Hunting as a Way of Life II.

This is unlocked once you have completed 10 major arkfalls. A major arkfall appears as a large red circle on the map with small red circles and arkfall symbols scattered around it. To finish a major arkfall, all the minor ones within the large red circle must be completed. After this, a final arkfall symbol will appear with a boss fight. These are tougher than minor arkfalls, but dozens of people typically show up. Again, just make sure you contribute some damage during the event and your achievement will pop at the score screen.
