How to unlock the Ikora's Protégé achievement in Destiny 2 - Definitive Guide
2 of these for me were bugged (Warlock and Hunter) and did not unlock, how I got it to pop was by pressing start in game (character customise) then press RB twice over to settings and go to log out and switch profile then log back in with your profile and pick your character, I picked one of the ones that glitched and both unlocked for me that were glitched.
Thumbs up if it works for you too

For Warlock classes are
Dawnblade (start with)
Voidwalker (Level 7+)
Stormcaller (Level15+)
Then open chests you find anywhere it seems, and you'll get a broken relic in with you must kill enemies until you hit 100%. This includes missions or cruicible.
Then travel to Earth, start "Shard of the Traveler".
Proceed to teleport to the Dark Forest.
Kill some enemies.
Teleport yet again.
Kill enemies, then intertact with the shard.
Use your new ability against enemies.
This is the case for the 3rd and final subclass as well.
*Heroic public events charge this faster. But killing anything charges this.

I just made a Warlock (for the first time ever) and it randomly popped

Yeah, with New Light and the game being free, it probably just gives you all the character subclasses, or perhaps only if you buy the DLC. Not sure.

With the release of Shadowkeep and the game going Free to Play, all you need to do to unlock this now is create a new character of this class! Once the first mission begins, the achievement will unlock. If it doesn't, sign out from settings and sign back in again (switch profile, not change character).

I had started a free trial of the retail version a while back but did not launch the game again until last night. I pretty much have only just started the game and did my first raid last night. But I wanted to mention that the Warlock was the class I created during the trial and was there waiting for me. This achievement did not pop for me based on that character I had previously created. It looks like I will have to create a "dummy" Warlock so that the achievement will pop with this latest update unless anyone knows a workaround.

@graymawr I used an old warlock I never played as, just created. The achievement did not pop while I was playing as him; until the weekly reset when I logged in, I was awared the achievement.

Each class in Destiny 2 has three subclasses, unlocked as you progress. For clarity I will split them into three groups:
1) Destiny 2 subclasses;
Hunter - Arcstrider
Warlock - Dawnblade
Titan - Sentinel
These subclasses are brand new for Destiny 2, and are unlocked very early in the game in an unskippable story event.
2) Vanilla Destiny subclasses;
Hunter - Gunslinger
Warlock - Voidwalker
Titan - Striker
These subclasses are from year 1 of the original destiny, but have been modified. To unlock these subclasses in Destiny 2 you must first reach level 7. At this point you will have a chance to find artifacts in chests in patrol. These can be gold regional chests, or the reward chest for completing a public event or HVT encounter.
Upon acquiring this artifact, you will revieve a new milestone instructing you to charge your power by defeating enemies with fellow guardians in public events, however I noticed the percentage went up from kills in any activity, even when solo.
After reaching 100% on the milestone, return to where you obtained your first subclass for a short, simple mission which I will not spoil here. You now have a second subclass.
3) Taken King subclasses;
Hunter - Nightstalker
Warlock - Stormcaller
Titan - Sunbreaker
These subclasses were introduced in Destiny with the Taken King expansion pack. They are earned by the exact same method as the second subclass, but you must be level 15 for the artifact to drop in patrol.
[Note]: I am a warlock, and have been playing with a titan and a hunter. We all had exactly the same requirements for unlocking the subclasses, so there is no difference based on your class. These are however our first characters, so it COULD be slightly different for your second or third. If so, simply follow the instructions in the milestone you are given upon collecting your artifact from a chest.

UPDATED FOR POST WITCH QUEEN:
When you first create a character now there is a tutorial new lights have to follow. Go to Shaw Han and complete the new light questline. Once you do a little tutorial you are tasksed to go to the tower. Find Ikora in the second part of the tower past the weapons vendor Banshee and the engram decoder Rahool on your right as you spawn in. There you can acquire two quests to unlock your other light sub-classes. Once you complete those requirements and turn in the quests your other two sub-classes should be unlocked and the achievement will unlock. If you used a level skip and have all sub-classes unlocked but no achievement, then equip each of the sub-classes until the achievement unlocks (this can be a little buggy with the skip).
If you are here then you are playing post forsaken and have boosted a character to lvl 30 skipping the missions to get your other sub classes.
DO NOT PANIC
It may seem as if the achievement is locked but it is not.
You will receive a mission from Ikora that will require you to get feathers of light from high leveled enemies. My suggestion is to do public events on the tangled shore because the enemies will drop then quite frequently.
Once you get 200 feathers(do not worry its not as hard as it looks) a mission on IO will appear.
Towards the end of the mission you will receive a seed of light to use on your character. It does not matter which sub class you choose just go to one of them and use the seed. Once you do that subclass will start to become unlocked. Once you kill all the enemies and finish the mission the achievement will unlock once you go back to orbit.
I had this issue happen to me on my Warlock and once i completed the mission i unlocked the last one i needed. Hope this helps and happy farming.

Edit Oct. the 24th.
It has been fixed now.
Only do the new mission for the new super and after that the cheevo is yours. 😃
Warning!
Don‘t use the Forsaken lvl boost here.
It unlocks all 3 subclasses but not the achievement.
I hope Bungie fix it but for now they have not yet 😕

I've been trying to unlock for a while and what worked for me was going to your character screen and rapidly repeatedly switching the 3 main subclasses over and over and it unlocked after a few seconds I did this the other day, hope this works for others trying to get this. I also didn't have the statis (darkness) sub class unlocked yet
For each character class, you will be able to unlock a total of two additional subclasses (the first is given as part of the story). The second and third subclasses will unlock at Level 7 and Level 14 - sort of. To actually unlock the subclass, you have to first find a Relic item specific to your class in any of the game's chests. If you're lucky, you'll get it right after hitting the minimum level. If you're unlucky, you may be a few levels higher before the Relic drops for you. Just open every chest you see and you'll get it eventually.
From there, you need to kill enemies. You can do this in PvE or PvP, doesn't matter. Public Events charge the Relic faster, so aim to do those if they're available. Once your item is charged to 100% you'll get an on-screen notification that says "Growing Strength" to confirm you can go to the next step. After seeing that message, load up the Director and a new mission on Earth called "Shard of the Traveler" will be available and once you complete this, the next subclass will unlock. This process is the same for both the second and third subclasses, and for all characters - only the name of the relic changes.
If you are not intending to use a character for any end-game activity, you can skip completing the story and simply grind public events to quickly level up and get the subclasses. If you would like to use them in the end-game, see Long and Winding Road (40G) for info on leveling while completing the story.
