How to unlock the The Life Exotic achievement in Destiny 2 - Definitive Guide

There are multiple ways to get exotics.

1. Campaign. During campaign, you are awarded exotics at certain points. You get a guaranteed 2 during the story, and one after completion. The one after completion is an engram so you could get unlucky and get duplicates.

2. Quests. After completing campaign, you will unlock quests that are blue. Do these to get a purple schematic thing, in which it gives you things to do. Do these and get exotic weapons. 1 on each planet it seems. *Io doesnt have one currently.

3. Public events. They have a chance of dropping exotic engrams, probably more so if you do the heroic versions of the events.

4. Turning in your tokens and planetary materials. Every time you level up with said person, you have a chance.

5. Play Crucible. You can get them for completing matches.

6. Xur. He comes on the weekends from Friday until Sunday morning. He sells exotics for legendary shards. Usually different each week.

*As stated by Maka91, you can go to your vault while in the social space, and count the number of exotics you have. However, this is only true if you have one character. It only shows your current character's armor, weapons is for everyone.

18 Exotics, still no achievement. I guessing they aren't all Red War Exotics?
*edit*

Do you know if you dismantle the exotics that the achievement still unlocks? Or do you have to hold 15 exotics in your inventory/vault?
0
0
By Kamakazi59 on 09 Sep 2017 03:59
Pretty sure you don't have to hold them, the achievements should be to have 15 in the collection. You don't have much reason to destroy them now anyway, they only give 4 or 5 shards and nothing more.

Sorry, just looked again and realised I made a mistake! Xür appears under the same column as the other stuff on Tuesday like the raid and didn't see the separation. My bad.

Im sure you can dismantle them, but hold em to be safe, unless Xur comes and you want something he has and you need to dismantle.

To clarify, these need to be 15 unique exotic items?

If so, it looks like there are 33 unique armour items and 20 unique weapons.

Apparently Sturm and Mida Multi Tools legendary pairings count as exotics too even though they're legendary.
Just got the achievement with 13 unique exotics, no duplicates but have Drang and Mida Mini Tool.

It can be across multiple characters. Or should be atleast. So Xur sells 4 exotics every weekend, 1 for each character and 1 weapon. Then also sells the one exotic engram that gives one unobtained exotic.

I managed to purchase a red war exotic from xur last weekend. But this week he was only selling exotics from either Curse of Osiris or Warmind (cant remember which one). Im saving all my legendary shards and just waiting until he comes back with red war exotics again. But it would be good if someone could confirm regarding the above comment.

Maybe they did this with New Life, IDK, but at certain points in the original story, you would be allowed to pick some at a couple points. DLC weapons should count for this achievement.

Another way you get get this is through the Prime Gaming Rewards on Twitch. They occasionally give free stuff away, which can include ships, vehicles, weapons, ghost skins, etc. Pretty much anything. I recently started playing the game after collecting all that stuff for probably two years or more. After getting to the point where I could first talk to Amanda, I had tons of stuff waiting for me with her. As I was going through all of that, this achievement popped.

Just thought I would chime in on my experience with this one. The achievement just popped for me right when I acquired 24 exotics. I only have 1 Red War weapon in my inventory that I purchased from a vendor. The last 2 exotics I unlocked at the same time and they were 2 gauntlets from nightfalls weekly challenge.

I've got a total of 18 exotic items so far, 4 of which were duplicates. So that's 14 different exotic items. But I just got the achievement when I transferred an exotic weapon (rat king) to my second character. Maybe its supposed to pop as soon as you get your 15th item, regardless of it being a duplicate and it just popped late for me? Or transferring an exotic item can manipulate the counter. Maybe someone can give it a try, I'm sure I got it that way and don't think the timing was just a coincidence.

You must collect a total of 15 exotic weapons and armor pieces. The best way to see your progress is the "collection" tab of your vault at the tower. If you have multiple characters, unique armor will count to your total. There are a ton of ways to unlock exotics, here are the best ways to tackle this achievement:

1. Guaranteed Story Exotics (3+)

During the campaign, you're guaranteed to unlock 3 exotics. The first two are guaranteed to be unique, and you can choose between multiple options. The final exotic comes as an engram and will unlock a random item.

You can also start a new character to grab some of the exotics you skipped out on in the first two choices. This allows you to grab all 6 of the exotics from the first two choices if you're patient enough.

2. Milestone Quests (Luminous Engrams) (Up to 3)

Many of the Milestones that show up upon completion of the campaign will reward "Powerful Gear" that could result in an random exotic engram that will automatically be decrypted. You can only do these once, and duplicates are possible, but exotic chances are very high. You can receive exotics after completing:
- Cayde-6's Flashpoint Milestone
- Shaxx's Call to Arms Milestone
- Zavala's Nightfall Milestone

3. Exotic Quests (3)

After completing the entire campaign, you'll unlock 3 special quests that lead to special exotics. They appear as blue bannered quests. They are as follows:
- MIDA Multi Tool on Earth
- Rat King on Titan
- Sturm on Nessus

4. Random Drops (Public Events, Token Exchange, Raid, Crucible, Chests, etc)

Exotic Engrams can be randomly generated as you play Destiny 2. There are many ways to earn these random drops, and some generate more than others. First, I would recommend using the "Fireteam Medallion" available at Tess' shop in order to increase your odds at good loot whenever playing. Then, you can grind whatever activity you enjoy, like Heroic Public Events, Strikes or Crucible and there is a small chance that you will earn an exotic engram. You can then take it to Rahool and decrypt it into a random exotic. Personally, I would recommend Public Events as these have seemed to give me the most exotic engrams for my time.

5. Xur (This could could vary in Destiny 2; will update with more information)

Xur is a figure that appears every on Friday, and Saturday, starting on September 15. He is a vendor and will sell up to 4-5 exotics per week, although the armor will be spread amongst the 3 classes. At this moment, it is believed that the currency required are legendary shards which are acquired by dismantling legendary or higher gear, and as random drops from some vendors.

The gear that Xur sells is locked every week, so there is a chance that he will be selling gear that you already have though.

What happens if you dismantle an exotic? Do you need to have all 15 in your vault/inventory?
I have 4 of the exact same exotic Warlock helmet (unlucky -- I know). I want to break one of the lower leveled ones down but I'm afraid it might deduct progress toward this achievement.

Any insight would be appreciated.

Achievements get stuck and sometimes don't unlock, similar to Destiny 1. You need to press Start while in the game, go over to the settings tab and click sign out. Then sign back in and select your character again. Then it'll unlock once you're back in orbit.

So after the New Light update on October 1st 2019, you no longer received exotics for completing the campaign

You can still do the exotic quest in order to progress for the achievement

Also, this achievement will pop once you get 15 exotics, it doesnt have to be "Red War exotics"
Mine pop at exactly 15 exotics and I have exotics from the Forsaken DLC and others exotics from other updates

If your achievement doesn't pop at the 15th exotic maybe you need to use the log in and out method

Cheers toast

Why are people negging this? Is the information wrong? Probably not... Grateful for the solution Draxler, 1st year, returning in 4th who was worried "The Red War" element was still a thing. Kudos.

I just popped this achievement today after obtaining what I believe is my 15th exotic, total. I don't believe I had any Red War or Forsaken exotics, for what it's worth.

Most of my exotics came from Twitch Prime; every few weeks or so they have a new exotic that you can claim on the website and then go pick up from Amanda Holliday at the tower. Not a fast method by any means but every exotic helps.

He's on the right lines but not strictly correct. I gave it an upvote because with all the out of date solutions it's probably the closest thing to correct. I've got 23 exotics and it still hasn't popped. At first I thought maybe it doesn't include forsaken as that's it's own achievement but I have 7 forsaken exotics so that can't be it either as that would give me 16. I think the description is correct, I think you need 15 from the base game and the solution was possibly written before it was changed last. Just my thoughts, I honestly don't know

Exotic items are yellow in color, and the highest rarity you can have. They will usually have the highest Power rating for your level, and special perks that are very useful in certain situations. You will automatically be given three exotic items during the story, and you will get one for completing Show Me What You Got (80G) as well. Assuming you do that for all three character classes, that is already 12 exotics. You will likely get three others along the way as random drops from story/patrol or Crucible rewards, or you can always buy them from Xur when he begins showing up.

A list of all exotic gear and how to obtain it can be found HERE. You do not need 15 exotics on hand, just have earned them at some point for the achievement to unlock. Also, bear in mind you have to earn 15 different weapons or armor for this to unlock. If you've got 15 total, but two pairs of the same boots for instance, that is only 14 credited for this achievement.

You will open it as the game progresses, but you can also speed it up, to do this you need to collect exotics from 3 Persians for the story and farm heroic public events, in order to transform a regular event into a heroic one, you must fulfill a special condition during its course, these conditions can be found in the trophy tooltip The People's Hero / People's Hero

I only got the trophy when I got the 19th exotic. And a friend got it on the 14th exotic. So the trophy is not all right.

Over time it will open on its own. If you want to open it faster, you can transfer all the exotics from several of your characters to 1.

For destroying 45 emblems on Mars, you get two exotics: a sword and a speeder.

I would like to clarify that, despite the description of the trophy, it is not necessary to look for exotic items specifically from the “Red War”. Items from “Forsaken,” for example, also count. But do not forget that we are talking only about weapons and armor (sparrows, ships and other “decorations” are not taken into account). Perhaps it is enough to open unique items in the "Collection". Using the method of purchasing from Zur described by Kazuma-2, farming is quite comfortable on the current F2P version.

The trophy works strangely. If you're like me and just came for the platinum, then all you need to know is the designation of the "Red War" exotic. It is indicated in the corner in the event, and should have a very specific icon.

BUT! The trophy dropped completely randomly, because the weapon upon receipt of which I received the trophy did not belong to the “Red War” category and generally had a different icon. I talked to those who received platinum and regulars of the game, they told me that the weapons from “Forsaken” also counted. Hard to tell. But that's what I did. If you have exotic engrams, give them away. You can get them by farming weekly challenges. By type, play 3 matches of 3 on 3 in the Crucible, or Vanguard. There is also a free seasonal pass that drops exotic engrams. Check out Zur. He arrives randomly on Friday and will be in one place or another until Tuesday. You can buy one random exotic from him, and one thing for each class, one thing for a Hunter, one for a Titan, etc. Also, don’t disdain subclass quests for each class, they also give you exotic ones.
Conclusion, it is not necessary to collect weapons or armor from the “Red War” or “Forsaken,” but it is advisable to collect them, this is a priority.

We disassemble unnecessary Legendary things - we get Legendary Shards (3 Shards per 1 disassembly).
We try not to spend too much Legendary Shards on upgrading existing items; it’s quite possible to make do with the new blue ones that often drop out as you upgrade.
By Friday we accumulate a certain number of Legendary Shards in the region of 52 pieces or more. Exotic Trader Xur is now marked on the map. You just need to fly around all the planets to find out which one he is sitting on. Or, if you’re lazy, go to the “Were is Xur” website and see what planet it’s on. He appears, as in the old days of the 1st part, from Friday to Sunday. Sells four exotic items for Legendary Shards. Weapons - for 29 Shards. Armor items - for 23 each, 1 item of armor for each class (titanium, hunter, warlock). For 52 we buy weapons and armor from him for the current hero. The rest is optional, you still need to download two more Persians.
With these purchases from Xur, saving Exotics for a trophy will be much faster!
I also advise you to upgrade your Persians through the story when receiving trophies for subclasses - they give you several exotic items to choose from during the campaign and one exo-engram upon its completion. I myself received a second character during the campaign.
