How to unlock the Bane of the Dead achievement in Destiny - Definitive Guide

The most easiest spot to get this achievement is in the mission "The Last Array" as the whole mission is pretty much fighting the HIVE.
It's also a great mission to do as you will have to kill waves of HIVE enemy's which include a boat load of thrall which are very weak.

Incase you are unsure of what precision shots are, it's another name for headshot :)

Note: if you have any issues unlocking the achievements for this game, press start, go to settings, log out (switch profile) and then log back in. It seems to be a quick fix for most people including myself for unlocking the glitchy achievements in Destiny

Not sure if it's glitched or not, but I did this mission without dying and had 89 precision kills and didn't get it.

When I had issues unlocking achievements go to the settings part of the menu, log out and choose "switch profile" then log back in and it should work! :)

more than one enemy would be "enemies". Other than that, great guide. :)

Also "most easiest?" how about...easiest. the "est" part infers "most".

I was worried for a minute because the achievement didn't pop for me. I knew it was glitched and about the method you said to fix it. However, it said I had 103 kills or so and 0 precision kills. I didn't understand this because most of my kills were indeed headshots. After I completed the mission and did the "sign out, log back in" method, the achievement popped. Good guide.

Got Bane of the dead and Bane of the Kell when I followed the advice to log out & back in. Thank you!

I kept dying in this same mission. I'm a level 4 Hunter and I would unload into the Thrall and then try to melee, but I would get overwhelmed and die by the third wave. When you die, you start at wave 1 again...grrr.

I know it's a level 5 mission, but here's a dumb question. Can I level myself higher through the side missions to 6 or 7 and then retry this mission and it will still be level 5? In fact I am wondering if the story levels remain the same and I can enter them as a higher character?

These do not have to be done "on mission". I was on patrol in Russia where the Hive are fighting the Kell. I was just doing the green beeping missions and not dying and it popped.

ScuzzyBunny says in the comments:

"As for location, I did Cosmodrome Patrol, then headed through the building where the wizard "boss battle" occurred in the story mode. When you get back outside there is a helipad on the right side, and a Hive "nest" across the way."

Probably a good place to get the Bane of the Kell precision shot achievement too.

Same here...and best of all it pops as soon as you hit 25 precision kills and doesn't even need to be in an active patrol mission (I made my way to a beacon, killing some on the way, then when the mission was active I was counting kills and it popped at 12, so my earlier one's counted as well).

As for location, I did Cosmodrome Patrol, then headed through the building where the wizard "boss battle" occurred in the story mode. When you get back outside there is a helipad on the right side, and a Hive "nest" across the way.

Yes., that is a good spot. I'll add it to the solution. It's a quick spawn and easy precision shots

Here is my video contribution. I did this on 'The World's Grave' on the moon. I'd suggest a Scout Rifle for this but other weapons like the Hand-cannon, Auto Rifle and Pulse Rifle will do fine.

Hope this helps!

Also; for those having trouble unlocking glitchy achievement do this:

Press the Menu button RB over to settings, highlight Log Out and choose Switch Profile (not Change Character). This will take you back to the game start screen, and once you press A, it will ask you to choose your Xbox Live profile.

Choose your profile and then choose your character from the character select screen. Any achievements that should have been unlocked will then unlock.

*Cheers to FLEEBS & ludo10109 for the info

A great gun for getting precise headshots is the Hand Cannon. The hand cannon one shots the Hive in their funky looking heads, just aim in and take your time when shooting. I did the achievement on "The Dark Within," the Level 3 story mission on Earth. It's pretty easy to headshot the Hive on this mission as they sprint at you and basically ask for a nice bullet to the face. You'll be awarded the achievement at the post-mission screen.

I did this on the level The World's Grave. It is all hive. I had 121 kills with 51 precision kills. Just make sure you have a sniper rifle and try to stay back.

The easiest way to get this is to go hunting Fallen enemies on Earth or the Moon during a patrol. It can also be done during a mission as the description states, but if done on patrol, the achievement will pop as soon as you get the 25th kill as opposed to having to finish the mission without dying.

You should be able to get these easily, the trick is to find a mission that works, or a location. The moon has the best population of Hives roaming, so choose a mission on the moon, and then find a group of the hives on the way to the mission (you do not need to be in the mission only area to do this)

When you find a good group, head shot all of the enemies you can, then drive away from the group (You want to go a decent distance, but probably shorter than expected) and then return to that location. You can head shot the enemies again and keep returning. In the mission only areas, the enemies do not respawn, on the way to the missions, the enemies respawn ad nauseum.

Continue to do this until you got your trophy.

NOTE: you MUST be in a mission, patrols will not unlock this trophy.

Warning: There will be minimal spoilers. I will do my best to keep them low.

First of all here are some of the Hive sub-types:

Thrall
Acolyte
Knight
Wizard

There may be more but these are all that I know for sure.

My weapon of choice was the Auto Rifle.

Next, a precision kill is a headshot with the Hive. Headshots are fairly easy to pull off if you aim down the sights and fire in bursts.

I got this in the Level 5 Story mission, 'The Last Array'. You'll encounter Hive enemies at multiple locations throughout this mission. Just try to pick a couple off when you're unnoticed. If you miss a few headshots, don't worry. There are plenty in the level.

At the end of the level you will be defending the objective from waves of Hive enemies. I stood next to a crate near the entrance and used it as cover. Numerous drop ships will deploy quite a few of Thralls and Acolytes. Just try to pick them off from as far back as possible.

The last time I went through this mission, I was able to headshot every Thrall that landed. There were about 10-14. Between them, earlier enemies in the mission and the other subtypes that deploy as well, you should have this trophy no problem. If you don't unlock it, don't worry because you can always replay the mission!

I wasn't even aiming to unlock the trophy.

If there is anything I should add or change, feel free to let me know!

A precision shot is essentially a critical hit, and in this instance requires a killing blow by headshot. If successful the enemy's head will disappear as a wisp of smoke escapes from their body. Hive enemies are found mainly on the Moon. This can be obtained during any story mission, or while doing a Patrol session. Probably best done with a Hunter using its sniper rifle, both for ease of the headshot itself and for keeping your distance so you won't get killed.

Precision kills on the Hive require shooting at their heads. Thralls and Acolytes will be the easiest to kill with precision shots. This will unlock during the mission, so you don’t have to go through the whole thing without dying. Scout rifles, hand cannons, and sniper rifles are the best weapons to use.

The following missions are the ones in which the Hive appear. Siege of the Warmind is much easier than any patrol mission.

Possible Missions:

Earth:
The Dark Within
The Last Array
Fist of Crota (TDB)
Siege of the Warmind (TBD)

Moon:
The Dark Beyond
The World’s Grave
Shrine of Oryx
The Sword of Crota
Chamber of Night
The Wakening (TDB)
Lost to Light (TTK)

Dreadnaught:
The Dreadnaught (TTK)
Enemy of My Enemy (TTK)
Regicide (TTK)
Outbound Signal (TTK)
Summoner’s Circle (TTK)
