How to unlock the Night Court achievement in Destiny - Definitive Guide

Right, so looks like we have got to the bottom of how to get given this quest!
Thanks to the following gamers for adding their info and in turn helping YOU get a new achievement! This was a (fire)team effort smile

New Activities To Do
So after all our detective work it seems this is all you need to do to get given this quest:

Once you have completed The Taken King story you will get a mission called Dread Patrol, this is essentially just a mission to set up patrols on the Dreadnaught. You will need to do this next anyway to get given more missions and have permanent access to patrol on the Dreadnaught.

When you have done that all you need to do is complete any Tier event in the Court of Oryx. You do not need to be the summoner here, just take part in a successful event, on any Tier. When I did this with my third character to test it, I just went to the CoO and there were 2 other guys there who summoned a Tier 2. I took part and we were successful, then I went straight back to The Tower and Eris had the quest for me.

The Quest
The quest itself requires you to do three things in the Court of Oryx:
Reciprocal Rune Summons, Victories - 6 times
Stolen Rune Summons, Victories - 3 times
Antiquated Rune Summons, Victories - 1 time

This is simply Tier 1, 2 and 3 of CoO, the recommended light levels are:
190 Light - Reciprocal Rune (Tier 1)
240 Light - Stolen Rune (Tier 2)
300 Light - Antiquated Rune (Tier 3)

With a full fireteam, these levels are overestimated really, Tier 2 could be done by three people with 230+ and Tier 3 could probably do it with 290+ but the Tier 3 bosses are on weekly rotation, 3 different ones. So you may find one easier than the others.
If there are other players on top of you're own fireteam, Tier 3 can be made a lot easier too. There were 4 others when we did it, so there were 7 of us total and we managed to beat the mini-Crota in under 2mins! And only 2 of 7 people were actually 300+ the rest of us were 280+
Either way, decent communication and co-ordination is the key to success in CoO, so if there are other people there, try to get you all into a party together as well.

Although the wording sounds like it, you don't actually need to be the summoner, which is good, as getting an Antiquated Rune can be annoying. If you're playing in a fireteam then you're obviously upping the chances of getting one. But at the end of the day, the summoner can be anyone so even if you're just at CoO with random people, anyone can start it, you just need to take part in a successful event. This is true of all tiers but getting Reciprocal and Stolen Runes shouldn't be a problem anyway.
Ways to get Antiquated Runes: As far as we know, they are only random drops in successful Tier 2 CoO events, Nightfall Strikes, The King's Fall raid and also as random rewards for levelling up your Crota's Bane rep. Running Tier 2 CoO is going to give the highest drop rate though as they are only 3 minute events but you will probably end up doing quite a lot of them before getting an Antiquated Rune, unless the RNGesus blesses you!
Note they will only drop as a reward in Tier 2 CoO if you ARE the summoner of the event.

Side Notes
1) If you have triggered this you won't see any marker telling you that you have a quest available, not in your galaxy map thing or anywhere. Even if you're in The Tower, standing right in front of Eris, she won't have a quest icon over her head but when you speak to her the Accept/Decline Quest box pops up.
So this may sound stupid but check with Eris that you don't already have it!

2) As with other Destiny achievements, if it doesn't pop when you turn in the quest, do the sign in/out trick:
While on the character that should have unlocked it, go into your menus, then
Settings > Log Out > Switch Profile
Pick your gamertag to sign back in, then pick the same character and it should pop when you get into orbit.

Good Luck
Anyway, this should get Eris to give you the quest, please comment if it does not work so I can update the solution. Thanks.

Good luck Guardian, see you on the Dreadnaught!

Yeah I was going to but I wasn't sure if there were more steps to the quest afterwards or that's it, so I just mentioned the light level needed for Tier 3. Is that then end of the quest then once you've done all three tiers?

Just here to add that tier 3 court is doable with 2 players, both should be in between 290 and 300 light. I focused on taking out the eyes while the other guy took out the ogre, then we wailed on the wizard as much as possible.

OK cool, thanks guys. I'll re-do the CoO section and add the steps for the quest itself.

Of those three steps listed I only did the 5 calcified fragments and summoned a Tier 1 CoO myself, not the sunless cell strike though. Immediately after the Tier 1, I went to her and got the quest from her. Thanks :)

OK, interesting, so you still have the quest in your inventory to do the Sunless Cell for the first time?

I completed this quest, including turning it in after completing all CoO events (6/3/1). However, I didn't get the achievement. It is not in Done/Unlocking either. I was using my third character, but it is currently my highest level.

I am now working on doing this quest with my 1st created character. I received this quest on him before he completed the "Successor to the Throne" Quest (the one for the "Sunless Cell" strike). The quest is still at step 1 in that character's quest line.

Awesome, thanks man, and thanks Tgamemaster for that.
So we can definitely cross that off the list of things you need to do!
Looks like it might just be the fragments and summon/completing Tier 1 event. mchsTom, if you can confirm with your other character if that is the case that would be amazing!!

The Tier 3 (Antiquated) boss appears to change each week. Last week it was the Ogre with Kragoor (or whatever the name is). This week is a mini Crota, no joke. Kill the knight, grab his sword, everyone drops the boss's shields, he kneels down, and sword guy chops away (with everyone else shooting still).

You can also receive an Antiquated Rune through Eris Morn packages when you level her up. Probably random, but that's how I got one anyways.

Ok, I found a work around you might want to add to your guide.

-Load character that had the achievement requirement met
- Open menu
- Scroll all the way right to settings
- Go to log out, switch profile
- Choose your GT
- Choose that same character
- Enjoy your achievement dance

Oh yeah, I had forgotten about that trick! I remember having to do it ages ago, not long after release, for some achievements. I thought they had fixed it because all mine have been popping since TK came out!
Thanks for all the info guys, I have confirmed it on my third character now, that it's just the 5 fragments and completing one CoO event, you don't even have to summon, just take part.

Yeah I didn't really think that was needed either. There's 50 in total on the Dreadnaught. By the time you finish the story, set up patrol for the first time you should have 5. If not, definitely by the time you've done your sword quest which is the first thing people want to do after the story!

To add my two cents, I got the quest (on my second character though I wouldn't think that matters) after participating in a round at the Court and returning to Eris. Though there was absolutely no indication she had anything for me until I talked to her. On this character I had picked up no calcified fragments whatsoever.

Ugh. Completed the quest. Got rewards from Eris. No achievement. Logged out and back in. No achievement. Dumb.

Got it to pop by logging in on 360. Popped there as soon as I hit orbit. Loaded xbone back up and it popped when I hit orbit.

You don't need to be part of the firemen that summons, just participate in the event. I'm done my tier 3 without having been in any teams doing summons on the dreadnought.

@vSully - That's really weird! Well at least you go it smile

@CanadaAckis - Yeah it says that in the solution, that you can be with random people, it doesn't matter who summons as long as you are successful.

It just popped for me but I never used an antiquated rune. I have completed countless victories while another player used the rune.

Run the Tier 2s and 1 Tier 3. Finding it hard to get the runes.

I unlocked this but i still dont know how i even got the first part since Eris never gave me the initial quest even after turning in the 5 calcified fragments. I unlocked it by doing the CoO bosses as you said above. However it would be helpful to let everyone know that you have to complete 6 reciprocal rune battles, 3 stolen rune, and 1 antiquated rune. The antiquateds are obviously very rare and i dont know another way to obtain them other than having a high light level doing a stolen rune fight and being EXTREMELY lucky. I did 20-30 total of all tiers yesterday with 5 other people and we only got one antiquated rune to drop

I completed this quest on my warlock and have no achievement. Do you have to put the runes in yourself? I know on the tier 2 and 3, I did not put the ruins in.

@ CenturyMatt - Thanks man, that's awesome. I have a friend who has just had the same thing as well so I'm going to take that bit out now.

@BegForMercy - Destiny achievements can be a bit weird with popping correctly (still), read the side notes in my solution for the little trick that solves it. Although if you have signed into a different character now then you will need to sign in to the one that should have got you the cheev and then do what I wrote smile

clearing the first two tiers is pretty easy, with instructions on sfreen. the last tier is a dozey. first get to 290 light, next find a dreadnaught instance that is populated with other high light players, bring a full fireteam, and tell other playeers in the court to do the same.

eyes apear to the left and right of the ogre. prioritze them whenever they apear. then take down the big ogre with primary ammo, dealing with the small ogres as they aproach. save your heavy and super. when the big ogre goes down you have a very breif window to damage the boss, you only have one shot so do work, and just unload everything.

you dont need o use your own runes for the quest. you can just help someone else and still complete the quest.

To receive "The Court of Oryx" quest, you'll need to participate in a Court of Oryx battle at least once, then return to Eris. She may not have a quest marker over her, but speak with her anyway. To complete the quest you need to beat a number of Court battles.

  • Tier 1: 190 Light - Requires a single Reciprocal Rune to start. Complete this tier six times.
  • Tier 2: 240 Light - Requires a charged Stolen Rune, which you can obtain by completing three Tier 1 events with a normal Stolen Rune in your inventory. Complete this tier three times.
  • Tier 3: 300 Light - Requires a charged Antiquated Rune, which you can obtain by completing three Tier 2 events with a normal Antiquated Rune in your inventory. Complete this tier once.

You do not have to be the one to start these battles to receive credit for the quest, so you could get this achievement without collecting or using any runes. However, you don't get very much (if any) loot for completing them when you were not the one to start the battle. You also don't have to be the one to start them to charge the runes. So if you don't have any Stolen Runes but need to charge an Antiquated Rune, you can hang around the Court and hope someone else starts one.

Before getting this quest, you must complete “The Taken King” questline and then complete the mission “Dread Patrol” to unlock Patrol missions on the Dreadnaught. Once you start Patrol, find the Court of Oryx. There are two paths to get there. You start at the Hull Breach. Go through the first doorway on your right and follow the tunnel. The back of the Court will be in front of you when you leave the tunnel.

The other way is to go straight from where you spawn in the Hull Breach and into the Mausoleum. Stay on the right side and go through the last door on the right side and follow the tunnel. One side of the court will be in front of you, but if you take the first tunnel on the left, the entrance to the Court will be on the right side.

Once you arrive at the Court, you must complete one Rune and then return to the Tower and speak with Eris to begin the quest.

The quest requires that you complete six Reciprocal Runes, three Stolen Runes, and one Antiquated Rune.

You DO NOT have to be the one to use the Rune. Being there and helping to complete it will be count towards completing the quest.

There are three pillars in the Court that require different rune types. Reciprocal Runes (Tier 1, white) you will get pretty often. Each of these will spawn one boss or one set of bosses. Stolen Runes (Tier 2, blue) are less common and require the use of three Reciprocal Runes to charge up. Each Stolen Rune will spawn two bosses or two sets of bosses simultaneously. The final runes are Antiquated Runes (Tier 3, purple). These can be found in King’s Fall or from ranking up Crota’s Bane reputation. Antiquated Runes require three Stolen Rune completions to charge up.
