How to unlock the Public Defender achievement in Destiny - Definitive Guide

Basic:
Complete public events around any of the planets 10 times with a gold tier rating to unlock.

Extra Information:

What are public events?
Public events are "random" events that occur when patrolling. It's also possible to run into these during the open world parts between mission instances too since you are essentially put in the shared world where they occur.

They ask you to do things such as take down the devil walker/Defend the Warsat/Kill X before it gets to X /Defeat the extraction crews and Prevent the vex sacrifices etc etc. They generally will have some form of time limit to accomplish them.

You will know one has occurred as the sky gets very dark momentarily and a notification/way point should/will appear directing you to it.

The highest tier you can get for completing one of these events is "gold". This can be done alone (Especially higher levels on lower level worlds like Earth etc) but of course it is much easier if others join in. Be it fireteam or randoms in the world.

So far it seems completing the event before the time runs out should net you the gold or the majority of events. HOWEVER, some do appear to need something more. For example the event to stop the vex sacrifices on Venus. Simply allowing even just 2-3 vex sacrifice themself will net you only silver-bronze so you need an almost perfect run at it for the gold. Thanks to HolyHa1fDead for that info.

If you manage to complete these events with a Gold tier rating 10 times it should unlock.

Spawn times:

EDIT:
I got a few messages about this link: It's a handy site that tells you (with countdowns) which event is due when and is auto updated so you need just check/watch the site http://destinypublicevents.com/. It's not infallible but it often provides good rough times.

Using it as a guide it may be possible to make a circuit and grind out vanguard marks. You receive 4 marks per gold tier for example. (Three for silver and 2 for bronze.)
It should also be noted that sometimes instead of a PE you'll get the message "The enemy is moving against one another" and an AI enemy fight will break out instead.

Also DesertFoxHunter has a solution for a one area grind if you want to work through bounties, do public events and get the achievement. You can find that under the following spoiler also.

It was mentioned that it wasn't working for at least one person but Exalted Entity has mentioned in the comments that sitting idly may not get it to spawn and that someone must be killing the enemies around the area in order for it to trigger ("Calling for backup" as you will). Thanks!

Achievement popping problems:
It should also be noted that people seem to be having trouble unlocking some achievements on this game. You should try going to settings, log out, switch profile, re select your profile and they usually pop just after selecting your character.
You can also try exiting the game fully (not just dashboarding but pressing start and exiting the game whilst on the dash) and starting it up fresh or even a hard reset of your xbox too if the others don't work.

Extra info:
I added a video found on YT by Leon Kaspers. It shows you the sky getting dark prior and shows the fireteam getting a gold taking down the devil walker public event. Just if anyone wanted visuals/examples.

During the beta I kept hearing over and over again that public events happend every hour during a patrol/in between missions on the half hour (so 1:30 next would be 2:30, 3:30, etc.) and for the most part of what I can remember it held true. I would check the time on my xbox and my phone and the evnt would show up like around the X:28 - X:30 mark in terms of time.

The events I've been apart of in the retail game have also been around that time as well. Not sure if it's just a coincidence or not but now if I go to do patrol missions to farm bounties I make sure to do it closer to that time.

Again could just be a coincidence or I could just be trippin.... but thats the only pattern I've seen so far.

I'm about to do the method I posted above again until I get the achievement. From the moment the first event starts I am setting a timer and taking note of the time. I have at least 2-3 events left to do. I will report back with my findings. Science for gaming. Yay.

@DesertFoxHunter, I have sat in the spot you mentioned where it spawns every 20-30 minutes and no events are spawning, this is after two hours now.

Entered map - 23:40
Incoming public event - 00:16
Completed - 00:18
Incoming public event - 00:45
Completed - 00:48
Incoming public event - 01:13
Completed - 01:16

I just got the achievement. I had 3 left and after about 90 minutes of grinding in that spot that I mentioned I got it. So every 30 minutes give or take, for me, it drops a devil walker in that spot. @Dang3R Gaming, I have no idea why there are no events spawning for you there. The only 2 possible reasons I could fathom that it wouldn't is that you may have been in the wrong area or you were doing it during a mission and not in the patrol/free roam. Anyone have any idea why it wouldn't for any other reason for Dang3R?

Thanks man. I will update with your info now. Brilliant. I actually got a devil walker pop up just before as I was passing through that area so good to know they are somewhat frequent.

I have no idea why it might not be happening for others though. I'll mention it just in case others have the same trouble though.

That actually makes a lot of sense. I remember one time yesterday a friend and I were going to grind a few events and we waited around not doing anything but squatting on the roof and talking. After what seemed like forever and no event we got bored and started shooting stuff and goofing off and then eventually it did drop the event. Didn't think anything of it until you just pointed that out.

I have the Strat Guide and it lists ranges of time per map for frequency of events. When I get more time, I'll come back here and post the times for all the maps. Some are much shorter than others.
For example:
Earth Maps
-Earth Restoration(Main Starting point for Patrol/Explore) has a 60-80 min window.
-Mothyards(Crashed Airplanes) has a 25-35 min window.

Like I said, I'll come back and fill in the rest so you know the differences. ;)

Right now, I have to go to work. :(

Ok, I'm back. Here we go.

If there's an area not listed, it does not have any PEs. You're average time is 25-35 mins most places, but some do have longer waits. I do not know if any of this can be considered a spoiler of some kind so read at your own discretion.

Earth:
-Forgotten Shores(Large Boat Wreakage) - 25-35 mins
-Skywatch(Fallen and Hive fighting/Helipad) - 25-35 mins
-Rocketyard(Starting area for The Devil's Lair) - 25-35 mins

Moon:
-Archer's Line(Patrol/Explore starting point) - 36-44 mins
-Hellmouth - 25-35 mins
-Anchor of Light - 38-42 mins

Venus:
-Ishtar Cliffs - 25-35 mins
-Ember Caves - 25-35 mins
-The Citadel - 25-35 mins

Mars:
-The Barrens - 25-35 mins
-Scablands - 35-45 mins
-Rubicon Wastes - 25-35 mins
-The Hollows - 25-35 mins
-The Buried City - 25-35 mins

The only public event I have come across so far was on Venus and was to prevent sacrifices during a certain time. If there are 10 sacrifices you fail, but I prevented 3 sacrifices and got a bronze, so a silver is probably prevent 6/7 and a gold would be prevent 9 or all 10.

Has anyone got the achievement for this by simply doing Earth events? Or do you have to do 10 different ones? I have done over 20, but 15 of them are Devil Walker, and I do not have the achievement for it.

Weird the guy above grinded the devil walker and it popped.

As I mentioned at the bottom the game is a tad glitchy and some cheevos aren't popping. Some of mine popped the next time I switch the Xbox on after a hard reset so the game was filly exited and they popped before my character loaded in the game.

You could try fully closing down the game and/or your console see if it works.

If not maybe try one on another planet see if it works.

But yeah all earth should work usually.

Wish I could edit comments. I'll do some more earth events tonight towards it and try get the 10.

All mine have been earth and mainly the walker too so if mine pops it means all earth is deffo possible.

I'll try get my PE's done tonight. I think I should be on 6 so a little grind. If it pops your achievement is probably just being a tad temperamental like some of the others on this game. If mine doesn't either, or after a hard reset i might add a little warning about cheevos acting up and trying other planets too to see if it helps.

Thanks for the heads up!

Ok so the cheevo just popped for me exactly on 10. All on earth and 8 of the 10 were all the devil walker.

So seems it's just another glitchy cheevo dude. It might pop on its own like some of the others or maybe you could try another planet also just in case.

The game is great but the cheevos are very buggy as hell it seems.

As already pointed out each Patrol takes place over several areas. If you put together a Fireteam you can station people in different areas, then when they get an inbound event they can call you over. With good communication and a bit of luck you can complete 5-6 events per hour. 10 events will also get you 40 Vanguard points, so you will be well on your way to earning 100 for the other achievement.

By HolyHalfDead on 13 Sep 2014 13:03
You do earn vanguard points for them. I knew I wasn't crazy. I was sure I was getting plus four when I did the devil walker when I grinder it out fir the cheevo.

Hey I'll add that in with credit to you also when I get home tonight since that's uber handy for others to know also.

After doing many events now, I can tell you 100% (I will upload my video later) that you can get these events every 15 minutes of the hour.

Now, the only party I am not sure about is if the "walker" spawns every 15 min, or if he spawns at the 15 minute mark and the 45 minute mark, because I am usually doing the warsat / guy running to checkpoints during the 0 minute and 30 minute mark.

Thanks man, I think i've just started figuring the devil walker is about quarter to/quarter past roughly each time it spawns and the mothyards were roughly on the hour and half past.

I wanted to try it a few times see if it worked but you confirming is awesome. I'll update later when I'm on my laptop!

Not a clue. I'm still on one character also I'm afraid.

It is possible it could count for 10 across all players but I honestly have no idea.

The safe bet would be to do 10 on one character to be sure.

If anyone manages to confirm or deny this I'll make sure to update the solution though.

It is also a good idea to plan out and run some laps using these public events. I hit lvl 20 today and ran 3 public events in a row, going from the earth to moon and then to another one on earth. I got 13 vanguard marks from doing these ( all were gold tiers ) and it seems pretty easy to handle the earth ones solo if no other guardians show up. Makes for some fun grinding anyways, plus the addition of rare/uncommon drops and rewards. I haven't figured it out perfectly yet, but I'm sure there is a great cycle to run these things over and over to make gaining marks and equipment much easier.

Yeah the game seems a tad glitchy cheevo wise unfortunately, hence why I added the log out thing in the solution. It's a shame, but at least there is usually an easy fix for it.

At least yours popped though! Good times man. Hopefully you'll have better luck with your other ones.

Anyone tried to map out times since the 9/17 patch? Bungie's patch notes said that they doubled the number of public events, so this should be even easier now.
0
0
By PuckJunkie on 18 Sep 2014 18:27
Yea, it is much faster now. You can even do 2 events if your friends are fast (your group goes to 1 event, you go to the 2nd, they finish theirs' off, and come to yours, and finish it off too).

By Exalted Entity on 18 Sep 2014 19:02
Yeah the times are still roughly right. Like I can go between mothyards at 00 and 30 and Rocket yard at 15/45 without fail

But I seem to have bumped into others doing this more often since that patch.

If the times are ever updated in one place like they were prior i'll update again

But you can still roughly use this as a guide as it stands currently as well in the meantime which is handy.

Works for me it being faster though! Already capped my vanguard marks for the week.

The best spot is where the loot cave is. I got one every 15-20 minutes "defend the warsat" + you get to level up and farm for engrams at the same time so it's a win win :D

By xTGE on 25 Sep 2014 13:26
I think the solution having the farming events guide is best. But if you really want to add in a section for farming items and events, then Earth is not the best spot at all. Moon helium farming is the best spot for events. They come much faster.
0
0
By Exalted Entity on 25 Sep 2014 18:22
Oh me too, i never planned on adding farming bits for items (more just mentioning areas people like to grind public events without moving around to other areas. One area PE grinds etc but it's just a thought I haven't really decided on doing yet =p)

Although the loot cave was patched today anyway so makes it slightly less awesome for those who like to farm and do public events on earth. (Apparently the spawn times have been normalized to about 40 seconds). SO probably not the best promotion.

Does this have to be on one character or could u do them across all 3?
0

By iiTs Hawk on 07 Dec 2016 05:36
You know what I do not know. I did it on one character but I also only have the one and haven't played it in about 2 years.

I know my friend used to have two and he used to do public events on both, getting a gold coin from both and sending one from his second to the main meaning public events used to be counted as seperated between characters but no clue as to how xbox tracks it.

So I googled it the grimeoir score tracks over several as did one of the weapon ones but couldn't find anything about this one so I would tentatively say one character to be safe (but I don't know for sure).

Unless someone who actively still plays can pop in and correct me of course.

(Though I imagine even if it was just on one, if you payed on all 3 you'd get it eventually anyway. They used to occur quite frequently and I asume they still do?)

Just a note. You forgot the two areas in the spoiler that I put in my first comment.

Just to add to the info.

You've already covered "Defend the Warsat", "Eliminate the Target", and "Destroy Fallen Walker".

There is also "Defeat Extraction Crew" and "Prevent Vex Sacrifices" as someone else pointed out. The Vex one is solely available on Venus.

Those are the only types available according to the guide. Below are the number of event types on each of the planets/moon.

Earth: 4 Events
Moon: 4 Events
Venus: 4 Events
Mars: 2 Events

Thanks man, I know it's a tad long but people keep mentioning awesome things that can help (spawn times, grinding single areas, links to other sites, work arounds) so it got added in so glad people seem to like it regardless!

Yeah the cheevos on this game are a tad temperamental it seems. I've had to use the switching profile thing a good few times. Luckily it doesn't appear to have properly glitched/never popping problems (as of yet).

It's good advice, I give the same. Try a couple more and/or try switching your profile. Always handy for people to know! Thanks for the comment!

I mentioned that spot in the spoiler where the other suggested doing bounties, patrols and grind it out at the devil walker spot. If you don't mind farming it's a wonderful spot as it comes on the hour/ half past the hour.

Of course it is quicker to make a circuit. If you use the times provided you can knock about 4 to 6 out in an hour instead of 2 or 3. Which obviously gets you the achievement much faster.

It's good to have different approaches for those with different playstyles though.

I might mess around with that spoiler section a tad and make it a "one spot grind" suggestion area instead. For those who have different areas they like to use with public events though.

I currently have 6 or 7 gold tiers. You can either just play and randomly come across the public events and join as you explore, or you can grind them. The easiest I found to grind so far was to start off on Earth, go to explore cosmodrome, and as soon as you spawn, head to the right. You will run through a building and come out on the other end (the area before you get to Devil's Laid/the area you run through at the very beginning of the game. I hung out on the roof of the building in the middle of the map (the one by the sign that has the dead ghost, which you can also get if you weren't aware) and then just hang back and kill weak enemies and work on kill bounties or precision shot bounties until the event spawns. The event is always the same, it comes every 20-30 minutes (rough estimate, don't really time it, sorry) and it's always a devil walker that drops in the open field. If you sit on top of that roof and are high enough level this should be a cake walk for you to complete in 5 minutes. Once you complete it, hang back and wait and eventually in about 20 minutes another one drops. Rinse, repeat. Time consuming, but easy and effective for me. Again, it'll always be the devil walker in that area, and if you're level 12 or higher it will be a breeze. Let me know if anyone else has other/easier/faster suggestions. Good luck and happy hunting!

The event needs people to be killing the Dregs / Captains / others. After they die, they will spawn. I sat there for 50 minutes eating my breakfast and watching Resident Evil 2010, and nothing happened. I killed the squad in front of me, and the event popped up instantly (because the 20 min time had been met, just killing them hadn't been triggered).

So I am guessing that you just need to make sure someone on the map is killing enemies in front of the roof, as that will make them "call for back up" and the event is dealing with that "back up."

After that time, I had my little brother join my fire team and we took turns killing. Every 20 minutes, after the last squad was 100% wiped out after the 20th minute, on the dot (stop watch timer) the event would start.

My little brother had to go afk, so I let him just shoot 1 bullet into the Walker's leg, and then he hid behind the ventilation shaft on the roof (the walker does not aim there, even if you are the only one fighting). I killed it alone in 2 minutes, and when he came back, he had the 3rd event gold for the bounty.

Yeah I mentioned that under one of the spoilers. They are really handy, especially grinding vanguard marks! I added a link that tells when things SHOULD appear (like quarter past the hour/quarter too for the devil walker on earth) along side the comment that shows how frequently the spawn from the strat guide.

Managed to do a small mini grind of the mothyards/devil walker a day or two ago to push me up to 100 as the mothyards usually (not always, i guess it depends if people are around killing stuff prior to getting there) arrive on the hour and half past where the devil walker is 15 past, 15 to so i can do about 4 an hour alone in a small time.

It is really handy stuff.

I should maybe move the mark part out of the spoiler to make it more visible though. Probably why I shouldn't update things when i'm really tired ;D

you get 4 marks for a gold tier, 3 for a silver (or at least I did) so I imagine 1-2 for a bronze tier.

If someone manages to work out a quick mark run using them i'll deffo add that in too for people to use I thinl

Public Events occur while patroling. PEs have different ratings:
Bronze - If time runs out before the objective is met
Silver - If time runs out but the Guardians manage to almost complete the objective
Gold - If the objective is completed before the timer runs out

You get 4 Vanguard marks for gold, 3 for silver, 2 for bronze.

Types of Public Events(as of now):

Great guide. I made a video in case anyone was still wondering what happens when you enter a public event.

I also get gold tier in it, its Defeat the Extraction Crews event. Feel free to use in your guide :)

I was unable to avoid getting the highest tier of completition in any public event I was in (most of the time it's either shoot a specific target, or stay around a target). So I'm not sure what's required to get the highest tier outside of "just trying". Even joining late, or doing minimal damage gets the gold tier in my experience, dying doesn't appear to affect this (I died three times on my first event and still got a gold).

The highest tier is Gold, (Three gold "flags" will appear on the top of the screen when the public event is over)

Public events happen often, you'll get this over time if you play enough bounties and missions and just join any public event you can.

Bungie is currently setting it up so Public Events will happen every 15 minutes. When that hotfix goes through this will be a lot faster to complete.

You WILL see public events as you're walking towards your missions, strikes, and patrolling as you progress through the game. and again participating should give you a the highest tier of completition.

It is possible to get less than gold if you fail to achieve the objective. For example, one time one of the public events required us to destroy one of the big spider tanks within three (or maybe it was five) minutes. I was the only one around really trying, and I couldn't do it before the time ran out. I never died. At the end, I only got one flag for completion instead of three.

Good point I should have mentioned that. You do need to complete the objective. Perhaps the gold rating is for the entire groups participation and not just the solo player.

Gold is for completing the objective before time runs out. The amount of people involved doesn't matter.

Public Events occur at set times on the various worlds in the game. You can find the schedule here. If you are near the area where the event is to occur at the proper time, a blue waypoint will show up on your screen, the sky will darken, and your controller will rumble. If you're close enough to the event, a large message will show up on screen to confirm, "Joined Public Event." A Gold rating is earned so long as the missions is a success, by completing the requirements before time runs out or allowing the timer to run out without the objective being destroyed/overrun, depending on the event.

Public events are found on patrol on Earth, the Moon, Venus, and Mars. The events vary in type from defeating Fallen extraction crews, defending a crashed WarSat, defeating a Fallen tank, killing a target, and preventing Vex sacrifices at a conflux (Venus only). You will have a bit of notice before one appears because the sky will target and your Ghost will say something. They are optional events and can be skipped. You must earn gold tier completion in 10 events. For example, in a Vex sacrifice event, no Vex can reach the conflux to sacrifice themselves.

The public events are timed and they must be completed before the timer runs out for gold tier.

Use destinypublicevents.com to track the timing and location of the next event.

Note: The events with the Taken appearing in areas and Court of Oryx do not count towards this trophy. They are public events, but they are not rated. Therefore, they only count towards your Grimoire score.
