How to unlock the Triple Play achievement in Destiny - Definitive Guide
So from what I've seen this achievement is semi-glitched the achievement description isn't completely accurate. From all the people i've spoken to who have unlocked this it has only unlocked through using a super ability and getting three kills that way, well at least for a warlock and titan not completely sure about a hunter.
EDITED for posterity: Apparently you can get this achievement as long as it's in the "triple down" time limit which being a Bungie game, I assume is within 4 seconds of each other.
I know there is a lot of talk about this being misleading, glitched or whatever else. However I can CONFIRM that I just unlocked this achievement by KILLING 2 Hunters and a Warlock, and ASSISTING a Titan kill, only using my auto rifle, sniper and a grenade. No special was used. And this was all over the space of about 2-3 minutes without dying.
**Notes:
*I recorded my clip with GameDVR and watched it afterwards. I definitely did not get a Triple Down, in fact I didn't even get a Double Down.
*I also looked up all the names of the players that I killed or assisted in that life on Bungie.net, which allows me to see what class they use, hence how I know what I killed and what I assisted.
*This occurred in my first life of the game (Not sure if this makes a difference or not, but it meant I hadn't died all game when I unlocked it)
*This occurred in a Clash playlist. Again, not sure if this helped trigger it or not, just trying to provide all the details to help others out.
*This proves that Assists count towards the achievement.
For some people this may be glitched and they may have to get it other ways. But this is how I got the achievement, so I'm sure it's possible for others.
Playing on control or salvage is the way to go primarily because you can adequately deduce enemy locations based on the capture points.
Using a Titan/Warlock's supercharge move basically makes these classes a 1-hit murdering machine. When that is ready, all you need is a bit o' luck regarding who exactly is taking control of a specified point (Is it at least 3 people? Are the different classes? etc etc)
I got this on salvage with my Titan - came in from above with my super while the other team huddled around the relic. They did not see me coming .
And I will confirm: you need to get these 3 kills done in succession - within ~4 seconds of one another (i.e. a "Triple" kill). Anything less (as I figured out multiple times) will not net you this achievement.
If you are running a hunter, don't bother with this achievement - it will most likely frustrate the hell out of you. Don't get me wrong - the hunter is my absolute favorite class, and the bladedancer subclass is the best for crowd control, but if you are not fast enough with the super you will just get annoyed chasing this dream.
For example: I was using my bladedancer on Control, and had 4 enemies at point C on earth. I thought "Hell's yeah, bitches! Prepare to get shanked!"
They saw me, and instead of firing they scattered. I got two of them (Titan and Hunter) and as I chased down one of the Warlock's, that tool decides he would rather glide out to his death then fall to my blade. Like an idiot, I tried to chase him off the cliff, and died as well.
So, a word to the wise: just go with the Fist of Havoc or Nova Bomb - it is much, much more difficult for enemies to run from those moves.
Questions, corrections and neg vote justifications below.
I recommend choosing the Control game mode. Your best chance will be on a small map, not those larger maps where people hop in their Sparrows to get around. You may well get this eventually through normal play, however to increase your chances you should camp near a common flag that your team owns, not moving and out of sight as best you can, and wait to see the flag being taken by the other team. Wait another few seconds to let more of their team arrive, then pop out and drop a super ability on them, and clean up with your shotgun and melee as needed.
If all classes were chosen equally by the other team, I calculate (hopefully correctly!) that the odds of getting this from a triple kill will be 22%, and from a quadruple kill 44% (credit to ElectroSpecter). In practice there are currently fewer Titans than other classes, so the odds will be lower. I don't know the exact ratio of classes chosen, so let's say it might be a ballpark estimate of 1 in 7 to get this from a triple kill. Good luck!
The description is misleading, however.
In order to get this achievement, you have to kill all three classes in a triple Down. (Three kills within four seconds of eachother.) However, it does not need to be in one hit. You are able to kill the classes seperately so long as it's within a Triple Down. This is easiest to do on Control. Wait until the opposing team is trying to capture your objective, and unleash your super on them. Warlock can do this easily, but Hunter and titan players will have to get up close.
if the achievement doesn't pop on your first triple Down, keep trying. You can get 5-6 Super attacks in a single control match, but be careful not to waste them.
I got a decent number of triple kills before getting this achievement and I got almost all of them while playing control. My recommendation for this is to use your super when the enemy team is taking over a control point (the B points typically seem to be the most contested ones) and go on a rampage. Good timing and a bit of luck get you this achievement.
Get 3 other people for this and make sure they are all different classes. Make a rumble match. Now just find each other and take them all out quickly by any means necessary. Grenades work well or just use a shotgun or anything you have that can kill them fast.
This achievement can be obtained with a minimum of 4 gamer tags obviously all running different classes. The two that are the same class can get the achievement in the same game. So if you all have multiple classes you can get this done in 2 games with 4 people.
I tried this in multiple private rumble games with 4 separate accounts. This DID NOT unlock the achievement.
I then tried it in crucible matchmaking last option on the right of screen called iron supremacy which is a 6 player free for all game type. We were searching in matchmaking at 10:30 BST (London) GMT
Luckily no one else was playing at the time so we managed to match all accounts into same game with 4 out of 6. This seemed to be the minimum to load the game. You can see how many guardians are matched on screen. Make sure you are all communicating via chat to make it happen, if not back out and search again.
Basically in game all group up in one area, we used any corner that was available, backed 3 different classes into the corner then used a grenade initially in the middle of the group and finished any surviviors with melees. You should get a triple down message if you managee to string the kills together. The other gamer tag with the same class can then swap. Rinse and repeat in next game.
We did finish the 10 min game to be double sure the game was registered.
My final word of advice is be roughly the same level as one of the accounts was level 12 and would not matchmake at first with levels 40 40 and 29. Luckily they had the spark of light item that boosted them to 40, after visiting tower and activating inventory item. I believe you get this for free as part of the legendary collection.
Also like many other games the achievement did not unlock straight away, I had to sign in under another account in the game and then sign back in under the initial account. Obviously after the game had finished.
It did unlock straight away for 2 out of 4 people.
Hope this helps!
The description for this achievement is a little wonky. What it actually requires is that you achieve a Triple Kill (or higher) with at least one of each enemy type included. You can not simply kill a Titan, then a minute later kill a Hunter, then a minute later kill a Warlock without dying in between. They must die within a few second of each other to get the Triple Down medal. However, much like the 100 kills achievement, assists are counted in that equation so you could actually only get two of the kills while a teammate gets the third (so long as you hit that third person).
Control or Salvage matches will likely be your best bet of unlocking this. While a group of enemies attempts to take over a ring, use a rocket launcher or your special ability to inflict massive AOE damage. Throw a grenade in just before for good measure, and come out of it firing on anyone still around.
Like with all Crucible trophies, you must be Level 5 before you can access the PvP modes. This is the hardest Crucible trophy in the game. It requires a combination of luck and skill. You must kill a Hunter, Titan, and Warlock in quick succession in a single life. There are multiple ways to do this. You can use Super abilities. Stormcaller (Warlock), Sunbreaker (Titan), Striker (Titan), Gunslinger (Hunter), and Bladedancer (Hunter) are the best options for this. Stormcaller might be the best choice because of how long it lasts (Transcendence perk extends it even longer) and its range. Striker and Bladedancer are more situational and you need to pick your spots (heavy ammo box, control point, relic in Salvage). Gunslinger is situational as well and requires accuracy.
Fortunately, this can be boosted in private matches. Get three friends and have them play as different classes. Line them up and quickly kill them.
