How to unlock the Massive Damage achievement in Destroy All Humans Path of the Furon - Definitive Guide

Like the killing 1,979 humans achievement this one should be obtained quite easily through beating the story, however also like that achievement it is quite easy to get it right away by simply getting in the saucer and going all death ray on everything. Note that this includes ALL vehicles: cars, tanks, helicopters,etc.

I have destroyed well over 500 vehicles and the achievement isn't popping. Is it possible that they changed it so we have to only destroy from the ground?
