How to unlock the Doctorate achievement in DEUS EX: HUMAN REVOLUTION - Definitive Guide

Here is my video walkthroughs for all the eBooks, it's a 2 part walkthrough showing you all 29 unique eBooks as they appear in the game. I have tried to make them as detailed as possible, even showing you how to collect the necessary eBooks undetected. I hope this helps. Finally, video 1 shows you eBooks 1 - 15 and video 2 shows you eBooks 16 - 29. Thanks Gamers

Awesome video. Looked over it and it makes perfect sense for the ones covered so far. When do you expect the next video to go up?

Thanks :-)
Do you have a code for the safe in that white room where the last eBook is in?
My hacking level is only 3, so I can't hack the safe (and don't have enough Praxis to upgrade to lvl5).

@kOngzor - have a hunt around the rooms directly under where you find Dr Colvin. There should be an AUD on a shelf there.

And thanks for the videos BL! The text descriptions of the other solution were fine but some of them in Hengsha were a pain to find without knowing exactly where to look.

Thx perfect vid guide although in one or two scenes would be a short view on the map helpful for people who haven´t played the game three times already like me ;)

Video #1 would be better if you would show how to get to the cafeteria in the FEMA plant because I've beenroaming around the building with the elevator to the boss fight and haven't even come close to finding it.

also, if you're careful and move very slowly you can cover the turret at 2.00 with 2 stacked cardboard boxes and it won't detect you

do you get the achievement at the end? not to sound like a dumbass but the achievement says XP books...they are eBooks? i have played the whole game and not found anything called an xp book, but i also dont think a game designer could mess something up that bad....

For anyone having a hard time finding the cafeteria for ebook 13 in the FEMA plant, just look at the map and the cafeteria is in between men's room and the ladies room, on the same floor you get of the elevator, no need to go up or down floors to find it, hope this helps.

Kenobi, its not possible. :( Hiding a book under a BOX in a place where you can't return is cruel and lame. Sick twisted French-Canadian developers!

A correction to #8. This is NOT Tindall's apartment. It's in the same building, but is 2 floors ABOVE Tindall.

As I waws trying to complete these while doing the quests, it left me quite confused wny the "Tindalls partment" the quest lead me to looked nothing like the one in the video, until I looked around the building and found that the narration of the video is just wrong.

Where did the codes for number 8 come from? As much as I appreciate this guide, I would like the find the codes too. Just seems a bit to easy to blindly punch in a code.

it is worth mentioning to people ahead of time that they should have the icarus landing system for book 20 and level 5 hacking ready for book 29. might want to add that to the top of your guide.

I missed ebook #8 originally and my question is this: I just got back to Detroit (after China) and was wondering if I would be able to grab it still (with the riots going on and all)?

For number 20, if you can't hack the level 4 keypad to the breaker switch cage go through the little vent on the right and turn right. Great guide but a little more description of where to start from wouldn't go a miss.

For the 29th and final XP book, you can simply open the safe in the "white room" by inputting the code: 9273. No Level 5 hacking augmentation needed!

EASIER WAY TO GET EBOOK #12

The Ebook in derelict row that is on top of the barrels, surrounded by 3-5 enemies, can be gotten on your second trip to detroit MUCH easier, and since everyone is rioting, there are no more gangsters in derelict row to give you trouble, you can just walk straight to the ebook and than leave. This is how it happened in my playthrough, sorry in advance if it is not the same for you.

@Samour They are called XP books because they are the only eBooks in the game that give you XP when you read them (200XP for each one to be exact).

Just finished my second play through on hard, worked with a written guide to get all XP books, but it seems I've missed one still! I guess I probably screwed something up after getting it (also was going for Pacifist) and restarted from a save where I didn't have the book yet and forgot to get it again. Only noticed this on the last 29th book and couldn't return to Detroit where the missing book is. The save for Detroit was already overwritten too because the game only give you 20 saves max and I cycle through all of them all the time.

So, just a warning to others, don't forget to routinely save after you get each book, the game doesn't make it easy to see how many or what XP books you already have. You checked it off in a guide, but then reload the save and you can be screwed as I am :)

Oh well, would have a reason to play through it again in a year or something with all of the new DLC.

If you'd like something that can be printed out, I'd recommend the guide over at IGN. It's what I'm currently using to get this achievement.

Nice guide but the descriptions for 14 and 15 are really vague. Look for the building called Downtown Apartments and climb the stairs to get to the roof mentioned.

I find this guide much better because it contains a screenshot of the game map as well as screenshots of the terrain. Without the map, it's hard to identify where the Ebooks are:

http://www.msxbox-world.com/xbox360/guides/209/deus-ex-human...

Be aware though that it seems to finish loading and then redirect to another page. You need to let it load, then stop the redirect.

WARNING FOR EVERYONE ATTEMPTING THIS:

-Very Minor Spoilers of locations and NPC names-

There will be a book in Hengsha that becomes unavailable if you follow a certain path to your objective.

When you infiltrate the Hive nightclub, do not go in through the basement (via the Sewer entrance). If you make it to the the vent and see a cutscene with Tong talking to a Belltower soldier, you've blown it. In fact, if you even load the Hive via the basement entrance that first time it might not work. The door to Tong's office will never open and you will not be able to access the E-book in there.

Instead, go in through the front (there is a VIP pass in the Huang Hua Hotel sitting out in one of the rooms, or I believe you can pay a cover to the bouncer) and talk to the bartender and then Tong on the second floor of the club. Win the persuasion challenge to gain the ability to talk with him in his basement office.

EDIT: CovetousCash64 has pointed out that the outside vent above the dumpster can also be used to access the Hive without branching the quest in the wrong way if you don't wind up going in the front. Just avoid the sewer entrance folks, and use all 20 of those saves!

Edit: Might as well mention that you will need The Icarus Landing System before you inflitrate Tai Yong Medical as well, while we are talking missables.

Also, make sure you can hack a level 5 safe for the last book, or just have an auto-unlock tool handy.

Important note: To unlock a few of the E-Books, you'll need to purchase certain Augmentations (as stated in the Roadmap) and complete some tasks throughout the story.

#1: When in Sarif Industries during the attack, there will be a room later on rigged with a bomb and some hostages tied up. When you get to this room make sure you defuse the bomb.
#1.2: From #1 and at the end of the level, make sure you convince Zeke Sanders not to kill the hostage. This way the guys wife you saved will let you into a room later on where an E-Book is located. Though this is achievement related, so you should be doing this.
#3: Make sure you upgrade you Hack Augmentation to level 5. Later on there are some E-Books behind level 5 locked doors and safes.
#4: Finally, make sure you purchase the Icarus Landing System in the Back Augmentations. You'll need this later on for another E-Book.

There's a total of 29 E-Books throughout the Deus Ex story. There's actually many many more, but only 29 are story related ones and are linked to this achievements. You'll know if you've collected one if on the left side you get the XP bonus 'Scholar'.

Here is a 2 part video guide I used to help me out on my Xbox 360 version of getting this trophy/achievement.
Please be sure to note that some of the eBooks can be had much easier if you have chosen to equip Jensen with both the Hacking: Capture Level 5 and Punch through Wall Arm Augmentation. There is also one eBook located in Tai Yong Medical that can only be accessed if you have purchased the Icarus Landing System Augmentation.

Highly Missable! It is crucial that you are thorough in your scavenges throughout each area, including sidequest locations and be on the lookout for ebooks written by Hugh Darrow. Reading each ebook gives you the "Scholar" bonus worth 200 XP.

Warning: You need the Icarus Landing System Augmentation before entering Tai Yong Medical in Hengsha, to avoid missing a XP book. You also need to have Hacking:Capture 5 upgrade to access certain XP books in Detroit and Singapore.

We highly recommend this XP Book Location Guide by Absolute Steve.
