How to unlock the Umlauts or no Umlauts achievement in Deus Ex: Mankind Divided - Definitive Guide
If the Fixer is killed, quickly press and load the latest auto-save. This will allow you to redo the sequence, hopefully, with the Fixer surviving. There are two ways to prevent the Fixer's Death. One is to persuade the would-be killer to put down his gun. That can only be done if Adam has the use of his augments. The other way is to neutralize the would-be killer--lethally or non-lethally.
The final segment of the game leading up to the final encounter with the Fixer, begins with Adam releasing Mejia from solitary. Adam must turn off the transport tracking system and override two anti-aircraft turrets. When he accomplishes those objectives, he can proceed to his departure point where he encounters the Fixer--unlocking the achievement if he can keep Fixer alive and have a conversation with him.
Once Adam turns off the transport tracking system, he activates an optional side objective. The below two videos show Adam proceeding from solitary, accomplishing his tasks, and unlocking the achievement nonlethally. The first video shows the optional side mission and also includes a decision point at the 8'40" mark where those that are not interested in the optional side mission can go directly to the second video. Doing so, skips the side mission and continues straight to the achievement:
The first video picks up the action from solitary confinement. The video that accompanies the below solution shows one of the paths to solitary if required for reference:

You need to have found all 5 of these pocket secretaries:
"Schedule Change: Mejia, Oscar" (located in the Processing Area)
"Recovered Turret Command Logs" (located on level 5 of the Tower in Automated Security)
"RE: This week's list" (On Stenger's body in the Infirmary)
"Worthmuller" (located under the fallen bookshelf on level 2 of the Admin building)
"Audio Transcript" (In Stenger's office safe)
The first 2 are also needed for the "Objection!" achievement. If you have all 5, you have the information to Challenge, Hold, and then Blackmail Guerrro into submission. I prefer this to the long winded spiels Adam makes when using the CASIE aug.
Towards the very end of the DLC, your objective will task you with exfiltrating from the prison by reaching the helipad you came in from. Before taking the elevator to the helipad, make a manual save.
Once you reach the helipad, you will confront both Mejia and the Fixer. Assuming you are stacking "Winners Don't Use Drugs (or Biocells)" on this playthrough, you will not have access to your CASIE aug and won't have the opportunity to convince Mejia to surrender. As a result, you are left with two options: side with Mejia and allow him to kill the Fixer or side with the Fixer and kill Mejia (this causes two nearby turrets to assault you and sometimes they kill the Fixer).
For the purposes of this achievement, you should choose to side with Mejia. Once the cutscene ends and he is about to execute the Fixer, quickly pull out either a Stun Gun or a Rifle and incapacitate/kill Mejia. With him unconscious/dead, you can now speak to the Fixer and decide his fate: leave him behind or bring him along back home.
The achievement will unlock once you have made your choice. If you chose to kill Mejia but were working on the "Code of Conduct" achievement, just reload your save and side with him this time, allowing him to execute the Fixer.
