How to unlock the Never doubt my skills achievement in Diablo II: Resurrected - Definitive Guide
I posted this as a reply in a forum thread, but I figure it's also a great solution here.
The minion nec build is a strong choice to solo through the game if you don't find it too boring. You max skeletons, skeleton mastery, mages later on, corpse explosion later on, and 1 point in revive, clay golem, summon resist, bone shield, and decrepify curse for bosses. Amp damage curse for normal enemies.
This build is EASILY viable through hell. Skeleton minons just keep getting stronger and stronger even after you max out, as your might merc from Act 2 nightmare will keep leveling his aura, and you gain +skills which give significant power gains. Immunities don't matter because you can curse them away. Bosses can't move when you use decrepify and clay golem. The golem will die more easily than the others, but you can recast it without a corpse. Almost nothing is immune to corpse explosion, and corpse explosion scales with monster health. You generally don't take any hits.
Mostly pump everything into vit; you likely won't need more than 100 str, dex is not that important, and you can get enough mana from your gear.
You should buy a +skills wand from rerolling shops. Magic quality skill wands are perfectly competitive gear choices with all but the best uniques. You can start to find +2 to all necromancer skills on wands at level 50, and +3 to summoning skills at level 60. Save up money to gamble amulets later on to find some +skills amulets. Great thing for nec is none of these items need to be good. Stick some diamonds in a shield if you need resists. A bunch of blue +skills junk is fine as long as you got resists.
Early on you may find it tough going on bosses, but the build viability actually gets better and better as you progress, so just stick with it. Nightmare will be easier than normal, and hell may be as well. Always have a mercenary, and TP to get more skeletons in an easy area if needed. On normal Duriel I had to leave farm minions 3 times, but his health won't regenerate on normal so it's fine.
When you run out of minions or start into a new game, you will need to farm up some skeletons from enemy bodies. Use your merc out in the first area of act 1 to get started. If you're progressed in Act 5 you can also get easy corpses from the portal to Nihlatak by Anya.
