How to unlock the A Life with Meaning achievement in Diablo III - Definitive Guide

You will need multiple playthroughs to obtain this and the Jewelcrafting counterpart.

To get past level 4 blacksmithing, you will need several Pages of Blacksmithing. For me, they started to drop in Nightmare difficulty and I had more than enough by the time I had made it to your first encounter with Maghda in Act 1. The highest level you can get to with the pages is 6 and to advance further you need Tomes of Blacksmithing.

You can start to craft Tomes of Blacksmithing on Nightmare. They require 10 Pages of Blacksmithing and 10 gold pieces. To craft the tomes, move to the armor section on the blacksmith and choose the bag. The Tome of Jewelcrafting and Tome of Secrets can also be crafted here.

To upgrade to levels 9 and 10, you need Tomes of Secrets which start to drop on Hell difficulty. They can also be crafted like the other tomes. One Tome of Secrets requires 5 Tomes of Blacksmithing and 5 Tomes of Jewelcrafting.

Credit to LookItsPineappl and Reborn Insanity for pointing out that Tomes of Jewelcrafting and Blacksmithing can be crafted as early as Nightmare, and Tomes of Secrets start to drop on Hell, respectively.

Can you be gifted these tombs in multiplayer? I might go online and find someone who already is level 10 who has a bunch of these they don't need and give them to me.. Is that possible?

Right now I'm looking in my inventory in the game and the description for Tome of Secrets doesn't say anything about being soulbound, so you could probably trade them to someone or have them traded to you.

I was able to duplicate/drop them for other players back when I was actively playing.

I did a quick search and most of the results that I got back say that the tomes can be traded. Though, I can't remember if they're soulbound to your character/account on the console or if they made them soulbound in an update or not. I'm gonna have to confirm either case, or have someone confirm it for me.

This achievement is actually incredibly easy using the item duplication method. This method requires 2 controllers, and 2 Xbox Live enabled accounts. Personally I have a stack of Xbox Live Trial cards - and used a 2 day to accomplish this.

Setup:

Make sure you have items on your main Hero/Character you wish to duplicate. For example, Tomes, Pages, Potions, etc.

Step 1:

Using the 2nd Controller (not main gamer tag), create a new game/character. Progress through until you reach the first merchant.

Step 2:

On the 1st Controller, Sign into your Main Xbox Live Profile (one going for achievement) - and pick your character with items you wish to duplicate.

Step 3:

From your inventory, drop whatever items you wish to duplicate. Do NOT close your inventory. Press the Home Button, and Sign out of Xbox Live. You should hear your items drop.

Step 4:

Sign back into your Xbox Live account, Press Start, and Reload your main character. Notice your items on the ground. Go into your inventory - notice your items STILL in your inventory. clap

Step 5:

Rinse & Repeat

I was able to accumulate hundreds and hundreds of pages, tomes, gems, and weapons.

After unlocking the Blacksmith in Act I, talk to him by pressing and then to open his store menu, then tab all the way right to Train. In the Train menu you can purchase upgrades, 5 upgrades per level, that cost an increasing amount as the blacksmith levels up, but also unlocks new items in his weapon/armorcrafting area that you can create. You will need to spend some pretty heavy coin on this, however you will need to be grinding coin anyway for All That Glitters.

The pages and books required to reach the higher Blacksmith levels will drop from Nightmare mode onward, with each harder mode dropping a new item.

A blacksmith can dismantle magic items for parts and then assemble them into completely new items with random effects.

You can start using his services after the associated quest in Act 1. After which you will need a certain amount to train your blacksmith to 10 (maximum) skill level.

Note, in order to level up a blacksmith, you need not only money, since after level 4 leveling up he will still need pages of blacksmithing and they will become available only after completing difficulty (Normal), and on Nightmare and higher they will already drop from enemies.

PS: on the PC version they could be purchased at an auction; on the PS3 there is no auction.
