How to unlock the Breaking Not So Bad achievement in Diablo III - Definitive Guide

Speak with Haedrig the Blacksmith once you have resolved the situation with his wife. Select 'Y', then select the repair option from his tabbed menu. Select an item with damage and then one of the repair buttons listed at the base of the window.

I know this seems silly, but my items don't seem to be taking any damage, still reads full on durability, 40/40 for example. Do you have to die for item to be damaged? Or does the Infernal Helms bonus of ignoring durability loss transfer to everything and I need to unequip it maybe?

Yea i think the beginning of the game, you won't lose durability. I think only after the Skeleton King, it is possible to lose durability.

Repairing will turn into your biggest money sink as you progress through the game, as any damage you take from enemies will equate to armor damage, which you must then repair. If you ignore the repairs (items will become yellow, and eventually red, as their quality decays), items will break and you will lose the benefits of that item until you repair it. As your armor decays you will also get armor icons appear next to your health bar on the bottom of the screen, which will change from yellow to red as the quality of that item decays.

Item damage will not occur until after you've reached level 10, and from there on it's a good idea to visit Haedrig whenever you're in town to repair items and salvage stuff by pressing near him, then and scrolling to repair (or visit one of the other repair merchants to repair and sell stuff, as repairing costs money).

each item has its own strength..during battles when receiving damage, the strength of the item decreases..so from time to time they need to be repaired - a merchant and a blacksmith will help you
