How to unlock the Demon Slayer (Hardcore) achievement in Diablo III - Definitive Guide

When creating a new character, press Y to enable Hardcore mode. If that character dies, it is lost.

Play through on Easy difficulty to decrease your chances of dying. You should reach level 30 about half way through Act IV.

Stack experience on kill gear to make it go a bit faster. Vitality isn't really needed. I played through as a Wizard using mostly Spectral Blades for some melee action. I'd imagine Monk would be the easiest class due to self heals and shields, but Wizard was very easy. I think I used 5-10 potions the whole time.

Don't get cocky, and watch out for the big hitters or exploding monsters! Good luck!

General Tips
- Play on Easy difficulty.
- Play solo.
- Use a follower. The Templar seems to be the best for survival. Use his heals and taunt.
- Choose passive abilities that are defensive/regen HP/interact with health globes just to be safe.
- Don't be afraid to use potions, you can just buy more in town.
- Use the blacksmith to make better gear, it helps a lot.
- Don't forget to socket your helm with a ruby to help the level grind.
- Salvage your vendor trash, don't sell it.
- Save yourself! When you are surrounded and feel that death is imminent, pause the game and turn off the console. Unlike the PC version, progress is only saved at certain points!

Boss Tips - Lethal Abilities
Skeleton King
- After summoning a group of skeletons, he will advance forward swinging his mace. Avoid this!

Spider Queen
- Easy.

Butcher
- When he stomps his feet or a red line of fire comes out of him, strafe to the left/right!

Maghda
- When she summons the group of minions, avoid their wind up attack.

Zoltun Kulle
- Watch out, his rock minions hit hard. Don't take them both on at once.
- Avoid his fireballs and ceiling cave ins.
- Stay out of slow zones.

Belial
- First two phases are cake.
- In third phase when he slams his tentacles into the ground, dodge all the green circles!

Ghom
- Avoid the poison gas.

Siegebreaker
- You should be able to kill him before he does anything really, dodge his charge though.

Cydaea
- Again, on easy she should be dead before anything bad happens.

Azmodan
- Avoid the pools of evil.
- When he summons the hell-gate crystals, kill them to stop monsters from spawning.
- Dodge the big meteors.

Iskatu
- Pretty easy, don't let the little monsters gang up on you.

Rakanoth
- Nothing lethal really.

Izual
- The ice can be a pain, on easy he isn't really a threat though.

Diablo
- When he/she raises it's hands, avoid the patches of ground, or you'll get imprisoned by bones!
- Avoid his lighting attacks in the last phase.

NOTE: Before down-voting, please message me with any improvements you think should be made. If you think anything should be added to the boss section, let me know!

I was breezing through with a Monk, seriously health wouldn't even get less than half way down the whole way through. Then I hit Belial, and he demolished me.

That sucks. :(

When fighting Belial, when he sticks both tentacles in the ground, make sure you dodge all the green explosions until that phase is done!

I had no problems w/ a Barb. Took mostly defensive skills and passives (extra health globes, etc), the Templar helper and went 1H + shield. Used 2 or 3 potions along the way, and only to be extra safe - never went below half health.

How about playing on normal, don't you get more exp? Or it just more Magic find? Cause im done now with act1, but nearly died during the Boss-fight on normal....

The only difference between Easy, Medium, and Hard is the damage and health of the monsters. EXP & Gold is only increased in Master I - V.

Barbarians and monks benefit from a 30% overall damage reduction, since they are melee classes, making them all the more survivable. Barbarians also have 2 passives that increase armor available at low levels (one by 25%, and the other by the amount of your vitality stat). You can even then equip the 3% lifesteal passive as your third to truly make you unstoppable.

One thing I noticed, if your playing online with a drop in drop out group you might have 2 issues. 1 someone entering sitting at menu or in town causing the beasts to get tougher but not actually joining you. This has killed me on one occasion and 2 Some one messaged me which made the game lag for a second making my potion not take effect and I died... Although you will have an easier time getting this if your with a four man group be aware there are pitfalls!!!

One last thing I found the graveyard on act one a good grinding spot as it generates 3 side quests and rare monsters each time! So between 1 and 20 your get nice gear and alot of exp for little work!

Could you not have a friend load up a boss level, kill the boss and keep repeating that?

I'd think that killing the bosses when you're a lower level than intended would be more risky (and less EXP) than just playing through the game solo. It might be worth a try though.

I just did it with a monk.. my HP never got below 50% from the time I was level 18 to the time I got the achievement. Just stack vitality and +life/hit with a fast (1.4 hits/sec or more) weapon and it's insane easy. I would just stand in front of the bosses (sometimes in their poison clouds) and absolutely destroy them. I kept waiting for a challenge to come but it never did.

Got this the earliest in ACT III - in the Baracks near Arreat Gate during the Blood Ties event. WIZARD is definitely the way to go! :)

It was really easy with a wizard. Ray of Frost is a great distance attack and slow down enemys and diamond skin absorb damage. My life points never felt below 70%. I unlocked the achievement in act 3... way earlier than expected. Just make sure to use the blacksmith to create rare equipment with extra xp.

For anyone that wants to try Wizard, I had easy success with:

1. Magic Missile (Charged blast)
2. Ray of Frost (Numb)
3. Diamond Skin (Crystal Shell) - probably the best thing ever, use it when you see anything "dangerous" and recast often
4. Wave of Force (Force Affinity) ,
5. Hydra (Arcane Hydra), (turn on elective mode in options to choose whatever skill you want, I didn't find Explosive Blast- Mastery attack worth it early)
6. Storm Armor (Reactive Armor),

Ray of Frost with Numb was my main attack. Did very nice damage + Numb made it very hard for any enemy to get near me.

Magic Missile was clean up.

Wave of Force was the occasionaly AoE attack for big mobs. On easy - normal difficulty, you'll probably one shot everything so either this kills a bunch of enemies or stuns a bunch of enemies for RoF to clean up.

Hydra is a fire and forget skill so just call it out before you fight a mob.

Storm Armor is also a fire and forget skill. I preferred this one as it kills enemies long before I see them which means less enemies when I actually move in a bit closer.

Passives:

Blur (decreases melee damage taken- just incase they hit you)
Evocation (for Diamond Skin.. and other stuff)

Use gear with Int and/or Vit.and everything should be a piece of cake on Easy. Never dipped under 85% hp and never used a potion. (Templar HP skills/ Life per second regen/Diamond Skin/Health Orbs and mostly killing almost everything before they even get near me)

This is a lot easier than it looks! First off, I would recommend playing it on regular where you can die so you get used to the game first. In Hardcore if you die, you lose that character.

1)First off use the wizard because of I felt more comfortable keeping it ranged and he is easy to use to kill really fast.

2)Play on easy! It makes things much easier and it doesn't seem to give you less exp. But dont expect drops to be the same! I didnt find a legendary until halfway through Act 2.

3) Play alone! if you play with other people they can either slow you down or seperate on you and your enemies will be harder. Highly recommended to play alone!

4) What I did was explore everywhere, kill everyone, destroy everything, and pick up all the books you can find for exp. Doing this I got to level 30 on the level Tower of the Damned Level 2 right before the Cydaea in act 3.

5) If you have it use the Legendary Infernal helm! That 25% exp bonus is really nice! If not just put the highest Ruby you have in a socketed helm.

6) Keep you Templar as your follower at all times once you get him! For his ablilites use Heal, Loyalty, Onslaught, and Guardian.

In the beginning use Ray of Frost for bosses/strong minions until you get Disintegrate at lvl 21, Once you get that use it on big groups even because that will hit everyone expecially when you get the rune Convergence. As for your primary attack use Spectral Blade on big groups until you get Disintegrate. The blades are really good when you get backed into a corner especially because you can just start hitting everyone.

For the other skills I used

Defensive/Diamond Skin- Comes in handy when you are under pressure and are being surrounded by enemies, helps keep alive.

Force/Hydra- its always good to have extra things hitting at the enemies, even when you are running away they will attack the enemy, can save your life!

Conjuration/Storm Armor- This one is my favorite other than Disintegrate! Enemies comming near you will get hit by lightning which seems to be stronger the higher your damage! It gets even better when you get the first rune, any attackers melee or ranged will get hit by it if they hit your armor!

Mastery- dont waste your time, both beginning ones suck in my opinion, and aren't worth the arcane to use.

Passive 1/Blur- Reduce melee damage! Very good!

Passive 2/Glass Cannon- Gives 15%, to damage, good news is you don't really have to worry about your resistance in Normal because there are hardly any enemies with abilities like Arcane magic.

Attributes- When it comes to gear make sure you are getting up your intelligence and Vitality, most important, a huge thing to use is gems when they are socketed.

I didnt say anything that was defensive, im trying to prove a point, this is a very safe method to choose, its definitely not the fastest, but if you as I said "Go around on easy killing everything and getting everything for exp" you can keep yourself ahead of the enemy monsters level wise and deal a lot more damage and take a lot more hits. Im sure this is definately the "Safest way"

I just told you I did it faster and safer. I played a wizard for over 300 hours on PC. I know how they work. You played one to level 30. Your way is inefficient in every way. It works, but anyone could think of a build as good as yours. If you're going to make a guide, make sure it's the best way not "good enough."

I face tanked everything and never went below 100% hp on easy after act 1.

And I know for a fact I killed it faster than you did because I used stronger abilities.

Hydra is for kiting and not even worth it until you can get venom.

Did you even realize you can use more than one ability in each group? Nope. You didn't.

Quit being arrogant man I'm just trying to help.

300+ hours on one character on this game? Not in my life, I will never do such a thing, this game isnt even worth me going over 300 hours in total. I mean its a great game, but seriously nothing compared to Diablo 2 (3000+ hours) That was a game worth putting time into, also chosing how to play this game is nothing compared to D2, this game has no character building at all, its mostly done for you, I actually built my barb only based on the gear I found. If people have a hard time doing my method they will down-vote my solution, otherwise your words are opinionated not factual.

Anyone of You tried to do this on co-op ? If yes , when did you manage to get lvl 30 ? I've started Yesterday as Wizard and my teammate was a Witch Doctor. I have to admit that we managed to finish Act I (Easy) quite smooth. I finished this Act on lvl 16 and my friend on lvl 15 .

@SennixNZ Thanks, all I did was put my safe way of getting the achievement, and it may take a bit of time, but its safe and you can save time by not dying. If people want to hate because its definitely not the fastest (If you don't die) then they can because this is a free country (America)

Negative vote for two reasons:

1. It's faster to speed through the game until you get to Arreat crater and then just farm there (it is well known for being the best xp spot in the game).

2. Your Wizard skills are not the most efficient nor are they the safest.

The funny thing is My method took 1 day to do, also I only dropped to 25% health 1 time, other than that my health was full 95% of the time. I beat Diablo and everything without dying once, so I say my method works just fine. Im sure you havent even tried it so how can you even comment and negative vote without even doing it.

.....

I did it in 5 hours (even got the Act 2 and 3 speed run challenges - which I admit took some luck in not ever choosing the wrong way to go). Why don't you click on my gamertag and see if I have the achievement?

What I said is well-established as the fastest way to grind XP, bar none. It's significantly better than anything else. If you want speed, searching down each and every enemy is not the fastest way to do it.

I didn't say it was impossible to do it your way. I"m sure you could do it without ever using any abilities at all. All I said was that your way is not the safest way and it's not the most efficient way to kill things either. It's just a way to do it.

Don't get all defensive. At least I didn't neg you and leave you wondering why. Had you bothered to fix your stuff, I'd have probably switched it to positive as you have some good stuff in here. Get rid of your pissy attitude and show some respect.

Create an hardcore caracter (on PS3 by pressing cn_T in the creation screen)
In hardcore mode, dying is permanent.
I haven't died yet (currently level 11 in hardcore ) so I'm not sure if this takes any room in the hero slots.(if anyone knows please comment)

The items gathered in normal mode aren't available in Hardcore mode. (in normal mode the items that you put in your stash are available for other hero's)
In game achievements are shared.

This halfway point in leveling can be quite difficult for new players, although the addition of an Easy mode makes this achievement considerably less imposing than the PC alternative. When creating a new character, be sure to tap to get the Hardcore prompt, and switch that character to Hardcore mode. In Hardcore mode, if you die, you die permanently and you must start a new character. Be as thorough as possible in your leveling, to gain as many levels as possible prior to progressing to the next area, and always be sure to keep a finger on to roll out of combat.

Note that Hardcore must first be unlocked by reaching at least level 10 in the regular game mode.

The trophy is easy if you use these tips . The character's class is ANY, the main thing is that you can throw the save onto an external hard drive, flash drive or into the cloud!! We choose from what is written below what is suitable, and how our friends will help us into battle. Items in normal mode and heroic mode will not appear, like the character, and you will have to create a new character. If a character dies in this mode, he will die forever, play more carefully, but a save in the cloud, on a flash drive or external hard drive will correct the loss.

Firstly, the mode opens after reaching level 10 on non-heroic mode.

Secondly, you need items (preferably) that increase experience gain:

- Leoric’s ring (item found from level 17 to 60)

- DLC helmet (can be equipped from lvl 1) +25% to experience.

- Level 22 green gear consisting of 4 items - Cain’s Robe (but it’s unlikely that anyone played so much and found a green book for the robe set in this mode)

3 out of 4 equipped items +30% experience

- Or any object on the head with a hole with a red stone inserted, for experience.

Now no less IMPORTANT:

- we call a friend who received platinum or plays/played Diablo 3 and ask for help in the form of the items listed above and PROTECTION (to play with you: friend/friends are pumped up)

- when playing with two players, the game adds +10% to experience, gold and magic search. items.

- in 3rd - +20% to experience, gold, magic search. subjects.

- in 4th - +30% to experience, gold, magic search. items.

Then we play carefully, the difficulty is either low, or set to difficult, or master 1 (how your friends are leveled up) Experience, gold - everyone gets the same (well, almost )

AND START PLAYING There is a backup of the save, or in the cloud!! 3-5 hours maximum and the trophy will not keep you waiting.

Without wasting my nerves, I knocked out the trophy by clearing everything up to King Leoric, at level 20 I knocked him down, and the trophy fell in the second Act, believe me, if you knock out the “All That Glitters / All that Glitters” trophy, it will be nothing but nonsense for you , so for him I learned all the locations by heart and went through more than a hundred times))) The disadvantages are that in Heroic mode the money is all from scratch and is not transferred to the character. That’s why I collected all the junk, sold and bought from the merchant, until the normal amount began to fall out , Without nerves, I simply walked towards my goal, enjoying the graphics.

Compared to the achievements in the original version of the game, this is very simple. But it still requires caution, since if you die in Hardcore mode (Heroic mode), your character will die forever. Therefore, I would advise you to create a Barbarian or a Monk to easily obtain the trophy, since their damage is slightly less than that of other classes. But remember, to open hardcore you need to reach level 10 with any character in normal mode!

If you nevertheless chose the heroic mode (for the sake of a trophy or just to tickle your nerves), then the simplest advice is - you feel that death is close (surrounded by mobs, or any other hopeless situation) - pause the game, press the PS button and fall out of the game . This way you save the hero and simply roll back to the checkpoint. Don't take risks! Get out of any dangerous situation.

As for the difficulty level, it’s up to you, you can choose easy and then no advice is needed: to die, you need to try incredibly hard. But the game will be just as incredibly boring. So if you still decide to try hard/normal heroics, the advice above will help you.

Update: PS Plus owners, you're in luck. Don’t forget to copy your save with your characters to the cloud after each successful game session. In case of death, you rewrite it and return the hero. The method works, I checked it personally. Just turn off automatic updates for the game, just in case.
