How to unlock the Four Prepared Slots achievement in Dicey Dungeons - Definitive Guide

When you play as the Witch, you have 4 spell slots. When you roll a dice, you can put that dice into your spellbook and take out the corresponding spell into one of those 4 spell slots for use.

A prepared slot is a spell that starts in one of the 4 spots. You start off with 1.

Every time you level up from XP, you are offered either a prepared spell slot, or an upgraded spell slot (and sometimes another dice).

In order to get enough XP to level up 3 times, you must full clear every floor (I could be wrong on this, but I don't think so). Every time you must pick prepared slot.

Then all you have to do is put any 4 spells in those slots and beat the game. The problem is that the witch is the hardest character by far (IMO and I have 26 hours in the steam version).

What spells you choose depend on RNG and how you like to play. There are a million different strategies you could go with. I normally go for the freeze spells since they do slow damage but disable the enemies dice. If you are struggling, I recommend watching a few youtubers playthroughs to get some tips of how to approach this. BaerTaffy, Retromation and NorthernLion have good playlists with the witch. I just got this and my strategy was to have the 4 spells below prepared (I’m going to list what they do, not name as I can’t recall that right now)

1
Requirement - Any dice
Effect - Do 1 damage and roll an even dice.

2
Requirement - Any dice 4 or higher
Result - Duplicate dice

3
Requirement - Single dice - must be 6
Effect - Deal 10 damage

4
Requirement - Single dice - must be 6
Effect - Fury - next action happens twice

If you roll a 6 off the bat, duplicate it, use Fury, then do 20 damage. Use remaining dice however you want to do smaller amounts of damage just be sure to have the 4 spells above prepared at the end of the turn.

If you don’t roll a 6, use the spell to do 1 damage and roll an even dice. 33% chance to roll a 6 and follow strategy above. If you don’t roll a 6 do what you can to try and get one.

I prepared spell 1 in slot 2. Do not prepare it in slot 6 as you wouldn’t be able to prepare it over and over to try and get a 6. I also had the duplicate spell in slot 3 which sometimes allowed me to duplicate 6s over and over. I probably should’ve put the Deal 10 damage spell in slot 6 to take advantage of this but I didn’t and had no issues.

There are tons of ways to get this, but I find the best way for all characters is to get fury and smash enemies dead in 2-3 turns before they have a chance to whittle you down.

Maybe I have encountered a bug, but I've just completed Witch's Scenario 1 with four total prepared slots, and I have not unlocked the achievement (and the matching in-game "challenge" is still marked as "incomplete", so it's not a case of a slow achievement pop).

Slot 1: Do 1 damage and roll an even dice ("Golden Cauldron")
Slot 2: Heals up to 3 points.
Slot 3: Duplicate a dice that's value is 4+.
Slot 4: Insert two dice to do that much in attack value, and also do 1 dice freeze.

So, I only had the four slots ever. There were times when I replaced the spells that were in those slots, though, I wonder if that's where I invalided my ability to unlock this?

It seems either I've misunderstood the achievement criteria (in which case, can anyone enlighten me?), or there's a bug I have encountered.

The requirement is that there are times you level up you have the option to chose an always prepared slot OR to upgrade a slot. You have this option 4 times, so you have to prepare each time, never upgrade. Assuming you did this, and had a spell in each slot, you should pop it.

Ohhh, I think I understand my confusion now. Thank you, your comment clued me in, much appreciated!

I don't think the game does a good explanation of the slots; to me I understood that a "slot" (during the time it holds a spell) and a "prepared slot" were interchangeable terminology (i.e., "slot" was just short-hand).

This is tough. Only way I've been able to beat a normal witch level is with upgraded slots to upgrade some of the better abilities like Hall of Mirrors or Glass Cauldron/Counterspell. These combos don't really work if I can't upgrade.

I probably would lose by Level 3-5 against the tougher enemies. I'm guessing the Fury/Magic Spear combo is probably the best one to do.

Posted here because they aren't really a guide to this achievement. These are more like example videos of completing the first witch level for anyone stuck.

Witch-specific Achievement

When the Witch levels up, you'll be presented with a couple options. One option is to have another prepared slot (meaning one of your four spell slots will start with a spell there). This is actually the best way to play the Witch, and what you should be doing for your Hard Mode run. Just make sure to fight and beat all enemies during a run, and each time you are given options when leveling up, make sure you choose a new prepared slot. You'll then unlock this achievement upon beating that run.

As a side note, I mention this here because I stupidly didn't realize this until an embarrassing amount of time later, but you can change what is equipped in each prepared slot. I thought they were locked in and couldn't be changed, but that isn't true. Use lb.png or rb.png to scroll to each prepared slot and set yourself to start with whichever spells you want, even four of the same spell if you want. This makes it far easier to play as the Witch.

In all bonus selections, you need to select a cell for ready ones and then you will have all the cells ready for the boss.
