Free monsters are the ones you add to your team that is not a partner to one of the main characters.
To evolve a free digimon you must collect a mature enlightenment slab from a shrine that can be used on them by selecting the digimon under status, tabbing over to evolution and selecting the evolution you want (if there’s more than one option).
The first slab can be found in the Inner Shrine of the first area, part 2 of the story.
These items will become much more common as you progress through the game.

You can also get them from certain battles! I missed the shrine one, but when I went back to the nearby area I got one from a brief fight with Fangmon.

You can only get to the Inner Shrine when
tells you to check out the shrine to see if you found anything, you should get one inside. I also got another one by the end of part 2 after your fight with Fangmon.

After you reunite with

To do this go to the pause menu, select "Stats" and select a wild Digimon (one without a human in the top left of its picture) and press
to move over to the Evolution tab.
From here you can pick any Digimon you want to evolve into. The M.E.S is used automatically but be warned that a wild Digimon CANNOT revert back to its previous form so it's permanent!
Also note that there are a LOT of options and while you can farm a decent amount of M.E.S
be cautious that you don't waste one on a wild Digimon when a partnered Digimon can reach that same form or recruit it later on.
