How to unlock the Bodyguard achievement in Dishonored - Definitive Guide

Achievement: Bodyguard

Before heading out on your first mission after the prologue, Callista will meet you on the dock and ask you to save her uncle Capt. Geoff Curnow who is rumored to die by poison at the hands of High Overseer Campbell.

The most straightforward method to accomplish this is to enter the meeting room from the outside ledge during the mission (follow the marker to get there as it is necessary to kill the overseer there anyways), and quickly rush to the table in the center if the room before anyone else enters. Then, switch the two drinking glasses on the table before hiding behind the screen by the windows in the room. Both men will enter and take drinks from their glasses. The overseer will choke on his own poison (and earning you another achievement in the process) and Curnow can now escape with his men. The achievement will pop once Curnow reaches a certain distance from the palace.

For those trying to achieve non-lethal methods, ImaginaryRuins points out what he did in the comments below. He spilled the glasses out and then shot both men with sleeping darts. Then, he deposited Curnow in a safe place before completing the mission. He adds that the achievement will pop at mission-end if accomplished this way.

Thanks for the new guide! My guide was misleading because of a glitch in my game..if you would read my edit you can see more about it!

ImaginaryRuins - Thanks, I updated the solution.

Woody is xx - Yes, I thought that was most likely the issue. But that's what's fun about making guides to these unknown achievements. It gives us a chance to work together to figure out the solutions. :)

I just shot the overseer with the sleep dart as soon as they entered the room. I never actually entered the room, I just opened the double doors and waited them to arrive.

One thing to add ( I did it the way EvilMonkey did by switching glasses), I got worried when the other guards started coming in to attack Curnow that they might kill him and null the achievement, but I was more concerned about getting the black book so I waited until everyone had left the room and dropped down from my perch to get the book, then took off bolting towards them in an attempt to "save" him from any other attackers that came (mission status still said "protect Curnow" or whatever). This was not needed. I never caught up to Curnow and his buddies and he made it to his destination just fine without me and the achievement popped. So basically you just have to get rid of Campbell and then you don't have to worry about Curnow, he will apparently do just fine by himself ;)

Something that should be added here is that if you are going the non-lethal route and want to save Curnow, you may as well brand Overseer Campbell. You'll have to research the brand method and pick up the branding iron before going to the meeting room. Spill both glasses and hide behind the screen. Curnow and Campbell will walk out of the room and downstairs and you can easily choke one without the other one noticing. Choke both, stash Curnow, and drag Campbell to the interrogation room for his branding. This will net you the achievement above AND get you the first step towards Poetic Justice.

Also - don't sleep dart Curnow and leave him ANYWHERE but the bin - even though the mission objective checked that Curnow was safe, when I got back to the hideout I failed that mission because he never made it out of the place alive.

Hey EvilMonkeyByte, I spilled the wine instead of swapping it. Then sleep dart-ed the Overseer and Curnow. I then carried Curnow to the designated drop point (a rubbish bin). The screen shows I rescued him but the achievement didn't unlock. After consulting other players who did the same non-lethal way, they said that this achievement, if done this way, will unlock upon mission end, not mid-way.
I'm wondering, maybe you can add this so that players won't be puzzled why the achievement didn't unlock for them.

I tried this approach first in the Definitive Edition then in the 360 version and it worked in both. It didn't even bust my Ghost attempts. Dump the glasses, follow them to Campbell's secret room, lean out from the crates and tranq dart Campbell when Curnow is looking at the painting, then crouch in the gap between the wall and crates. Curnow draws his sword but immediately walks out of the room. Then he quickly leaves the area and is declared rescued. I've done this multiple times in both versions and it always works. In a non-Ghost attempt, I spoke with Curnow who didn't recognize me with the mask but thanked me and left.

When on the mission to assassinate Overseer Campbell you have the option to poison Campbell, Curnow, both or neither. So long as you don't poison Curnow he should escape after you take out Campbell (either lethal or non), and after he runs to his getaway point (about 1 minute in game time) there will be a message saying Curnow has been rescued and the trophy will pop.

When you finally reach the meeting room, there will be two glasses on the table in the middle of the room. Either destroy them both for a nonlethal solution, or switch the glasses so the Overseer poisons himself. If you chose the first option, you'll need to follow the men down to the basement, where the Overseer will show Captain Curnow a painting, and pull out a sword to kill him while his back is turned. That's your queue to move in and take out the Overseer, so Cpt Curnow realizes you're saving him, otherwise he will call the guards. The achievement will pop once Curnow walks off the property by himself.
