How to unlock the Clean Hands achievement in Dishonored - Definitive Guide

CONFIRMED: Using mission select will VOID this achievement. This has to be done on one brand new playthrough. If you killed someone on accident, reload the save before you made your kill, if you cant remember or don't know where it was you'll have to just restart the entire mission over.

SPOILERS BELOW

CONFIRMED: Sleep Darting Granny WILL VOID the achievement. Just run past her instead.

CONFIRMED: I did EVERY mission for Granny AND Slackjaw. Poisoning the stuff in the brewery does NOT affect the achievement. I skipped killing Shaw in the Boyle Mansion level. I figured even though supposedly it won't affect anything I didn't want to risk using a gun and still technically killing someone. I didn't feel that doing that mission was a good idea.

CONFIRMED: In mission 7 when I had to steal the key off Granny (kept a save right before I tried this until I got it perfect), I immediately booked it up the left staircase using blink like crazy until i got to the door to unlock it. Immediately got inside and shut the door, no matter how fast you do this you'll always hear a "zing" sounding like someone was alerted. This is FALSE. My theory is as long as you have that door closed BEFORE you hear the "zing" noise you're in the clear.

I was also going for Mostly Flesh and Steel on this playthrough as well. That is why I only used blink.

CONFIRMED: Bone charms are completely aloud to use. I can confirm that as well. I had six equipped.

CONFIRMED: Using "REPLAY" option immediately after you finished any mission and see in statistic that someone was killed DOES NOT affect the achievement.

CONFIRMED: DO NOT kill any Dogs. Dogs don't count as people but they will be considered a kill an will void the achievement.

Anyone have any other questions let me know. I had no glitches at all going for all three of the big stealth achievements (ghost, shadow, clean hands). Just followed the directions by starting a brand new playthrough not using any mission selects.

i'll make the change. you CAN reload the save. i had to do so, very many times. HOWEVER, i never had to replay a mission except for the prologue. the prologue showed that I killed two people. I think I hid them in the dumpster next to the explosion when I escaped and they died that way. but you have to complete the entire game without killing anyone. So to answer your question, you should be able to reload a save and try again from where you know you haven't killed anyone yet and still the achievement. I had to do so on the prologue obviously and I was completely okay even though I got to a mission complete screen and had to reload a previous save.

Hi buddy, do you know if "ghost" and "shadow" are void if i've had a body discovered, although I got the ticks for not killing anyone and never being detected, if it is void do i have to restart the mission or can i reload an earlier save where the body was not discovered? Thanks :)

I only ask because having a body discovered and accidently killing someone are different

It won't affect the achievemen, if you look closely in the after mission briefing there is a check list for Shadow and Not killing anyone.

While going for Clean Hands and Ghost, is it possible to collect all the paintings too? Or should I just do a speed run for the paintings?

Samphaa what Epic Diehard said is more than likely true, howerver I did all three stealth achievements in one brand new playthrough so just to be SAFE I made sure I had 0's all across the board as well as the two checkmarks on the bottom.

Don't do anything risky! If you can get past someone without knocking them out, then by all means keep moving!

Occasionally gamers have reported on xbox360achievements.org that rats are known to very rarely attack unconscious bodies, this will NOT void the achievement. If you don't do the killing directly you should be okay.

Big L - i'm missing something. you said the prologue showed you as killing two people - how did you see that? When I go to the mission select screen, the prologue doesn't show. Only the other missions. They're showing as 0 kills all the way for me (so far!) but in the prologue I killed the two guards (didn't know I could just block) - am I stuffed now? I presume i'll need to go back and do it all again??? Cheers in advance

I can't complete "House of Pleasure" with either box ticked, yet I kill nobody and I don't get detected.
First time I tried it said 1 hostle killed and 1 body found, the second time it said 4 hostiles killed and 1 body found. I'm pretty sure I didn't kill anybody. I even avoided the assassins and weepers.

Also, do weepers count as kills?

You're kidding! Argh!!!! I was convinced the assassins would be counted so last night i started again. FFS! Never mind, just need to plough on through it. It's been quicker so far as i know exactly where to go and what to do.

Cheers for the response :)

I had to play through from Flooded District again as it didn't unlock for me after my first playthough (I choked out granny the first time then sleep darted her, did not get seen). This time I agreed to help her with Slackjaw, but as she turned away towards the cauldron I stole the key, freed Slackjaw and then ran back the way I came instead of going through the slipstream in Granny's room. Completed the last 2 missions in 10mins each and popped Cleans Hands and Ghost =D

Tip for the issue with Granny/Slackjaw in the sewers - it seems that if you are doing this, you will obviously be on a low-chaos playthrough. If you don't do _any_ extra side missions for Granny/Slackjaw (except for the Pendleton non-violent one - and just rush the story as I did), you do not even encounter them in the sewers - the wounded Slackjaw thug is not present, the gate is unlocked and the people on the other side are people and not weepers. Just thought I would mention it in case people are wondering about the issue with Granny (who I never actually talked to in my run) 'detecting' you when you steal the key.

Dogs count as kills.
If you sick a dog on a guard and he dies I believe that still is considered a kill. You don't need to go down into the kennels area to get the Clean Hands achievement anyhow. I didn't.

Go On Thorne - As I've said, you CANNOT use mission select. You have to start a brand new playthrough! Don't kill ANYTHING!

Kaiser - That's strange. When you say that you've replayed it 3 times and you keep getting 1 hostile killed are you replaying from the mission replay screen or are you just reloading a previous save? If you are reloading a save there is a chance you killed someone before you saved? Stranger things have happened. If you are mission replaying 3 times and still getting 1 hostile killed something is wrong.

I didn't use mission select? I played from Prologue straight through to the end. But I killed the 2 weepers under the hounds pit pub. I tried going back and not killing them but it didn't unlock. :/ I'd have to play the whole story again.. Yes it only took me a day but i cba :P

I have a theory... from what i've seen in the walkthroughs, its key to not even incapacitate any guards. This game has some strange despawning issues when the body count gets too high. Even if the bodies are unconscious, they will start disappearing after about 5 or so in one area. This may be counting as kills because the guard entity itself no longer exists. It won't show up on the mission debriefing, but it may be counting.

This is chieve is glitched. Started a new game and didn't kill a soul. I even made sure the bastards were unconscious before I left the map. At the stat screen both boxes are checked. When I finished the game, only shadow popped. Any ideas?

Not sure if anyone else mentioned this, but I noticed it's not in the guide. Killing the dogs will void this achievement, even though it says don't kill anyone. Apparently the dogs are people >.>

First playthrough I ddin't get the achievement and couldn't understand why, as I hadn't killed anyone, even the assassins in the beginning. I did a second playthrough and killed 2 dogs on Mission 7 (the flooded area) and still didn't get the achievement. I did a bit of research and saw contradictory info on the net as to whether dogs voided the achievement or not and decided to see for myself. Loaded up a save file from Mission 7 on the EXACT SAME PLAYTHROUGH as my number 2 failure. This save happened to be right before the dogs (lucky ^^). I didn't kill the dogs and rushed through the end of the game and POP, there's clean hands for me.

I am in need of serious help with this achievement. Every mission I got check marks for no alerts and no kills, yet at the end of the game there is no achievement. I never saw Granny or Slackjaw in the sewers, even though I did Slackjaws mission. Could this have voided the achievement, even though I never touched Granny in the sewers?

@ Kaiser679 - and anyone really that is having trouble with this achievement: You guys need to be aware that knocking out enemies and leaving them in areas with 3, 2 or even 1 rat will result in a kill for you at the end of the mission. Seriously, I took out a guard during the fourth mission trying to complete Slackjaw's quest (finding the dead guy's letter) and I left that guard in a room with a rat only to find at the end of the mission it claimed I killed someone.

I went back through, without killing anyone, and I got the mission done. To verify, I went back through again on mission 3, took a guard out and put him down where there were rats - once I completed the mission it claimed I had killed someone.

IF YOU KNOCK SOMEONE OUT MAKE CERTAIN THERE ARE NO RATS ANYWHERE!!!

Just got this, Ghost, Shadow, and Mostly Flesh and Steel in one go.

During mission 7 I did not even run into Granny - I am not certain if you went a different way, but it should be noted that even interacting with Granny is not required for the mission.

Also, do yourselves a favor and do whatever can be done to LEAVE ENEMIES ALONE. This game offers routes all over the place - it is not always necessary to choke someone out in order to proceed forward. Just keep that in mind.

Rats do not eat weepers. Check your missions' stats - you'll see when corpse was produced (hope it will be the last mission, because if not you would replay from the mission next the one without any kill to get this chievo).

I had ticks on all the mission stats. I've got the achievement now and the only thing I did differently on the second playthrough was I hid the weepers in the pub and I didn't rob the safe on the Slackjaw side mission. So it's either of those things that voids the achievement.

Heres something that doesn't seem to be addressed. The plants that spit acid at you. I am trying to exit the sewers and there are a TON of them in a room just after the group of people. It doesn't seem like I'll survive trying to run through. Do these things count against the no killing chievo?

By XxP1KExX on 17 Oct 2014 15:43
@XxP1KExX If anyone dies as a result of something you did, it counts as if you killed them.

Examples:
You choked someone out, left them on the floor and rats ate them up.
You choked someone out and left them lying on a ledge to avoid the rats, but somehow they fell down and died from the fall.
You sleep darted someone who fell into water and drowned.
You sleep darted someone who tumbled down a flight of stairs (yes, that can kill too).
(This is for the first level only) Choked someone out and left them within the blast radius of the bomb that blows up the door.

Basically, leave all unconscious bodies in "safe" places (not on the floor or in a dangerous location), make sure they aren't dead when you leave them there, and make sure you don't do anything afterwards that compromises their safety.

@TheIcemanCometh It's been so long I cannot confirm that. You can try and then finish the mission. Just be sure to check the stats at the end of the mission and be prepared to restart it. If you kill someone and then restart the mission from the beginning you'll still be safe.

Malice, go for the art dealer achievement. It is incredibly easy to get all of them on that playthrough that you'll be doing because I actually ended up doing that on my stealth playthrough as well to finish off the rest of my achievements.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QloXKJUdpB8

**NOTE** Mission select can NOT be used to obtain Art Dealer. It must be obtained in one playthrough and will unlock after picking up the final painting in granny's bedroom.

@El Thommo, remember you CANT use mission select for clean hands. You have to start a brand NEW playthrough. I can CONFIRM that shooting at the assassins in the beginning of the prologue doesn't count as a kill. They simply disappear. They CANT be killed. If at the end of a mission you see you killed someone, either restart the mission immediately by pressing the button to do so OR reload a save before when you killed someone.

@Robadobzilla Weepers count as kills. Do NOT kill them. Possibly the slackjaw area has weepers that you killed? Remember to avoid EVERYONE. Best to never get detected either. It insures a better chance of not having anyone killed. I didn't see how you played that level so I can identify what went wrong. I had no problems with that mission. Remember to complete Slackjaw's side missions to neutralize the Pendleton Twins without killing them.

I think I can personally debunk that theory. During my clean hands playthrough I completed all the granny and slackjaw missions. The first time you go see Granny three thugs show up at the door. I was able to incapacitate all three thugs and threw them all in one corner. I came back to the spot a while later and one had disappeared. This got me worried, but not worried enough to restart my entire playthrough all over again. Clean Hands unlocked for me at the end of the game. I'm glad you brought that up because I've had first hand experience with that scenario and it caused me no problems with unlocking the achievement.

The achievement is glitched for me...

I restarted the game all the way through on a low chaos playthrough and did not get any kills checked or alerts (got Shadow and Mostly Flesh and Steel by the end of the game).

I did not kill the weepers between missions, I choked them out.

I did not do any Granny missions so as someone above mentioned I just waltzed through the gate at the end without even having to deal with the weird Slackjaw/Granny encounter.

Went all the way through, Ghost checked, Didn't Kill Checked, and hid all the bodies carefully. No achievement.

The only thing I could possibly imagine is killing a rat on accident by throwing a loose brick at the start of mission 7 and having it land on one. I'm pretty sure that shouldn't count as a kill though. Sigh. Any help?

You can sleep dart Granny Rags just fine after the latest title update (version 1.2 on PC). I just got Clean hands/Ghost/Mostly Flesh etc on the same playthrough after sleep darting her. You should probably add that to your solution.

Just do exactly as you described, then peek through the keyhole and wait for her to leave the room, then sneak out and burn her locket. Wait until she teleports to your right side (if you shoot her on the left she'll fall down a ledge and die), sneak to the window, sleep dart her in the head and there you go. All the cheevos and no loose ends.

Note: This is not a guide. Instead, this is a warning. Several folks have reported that this achievement isn't unlocking, despite having the "No Kills" checkbox ticked for every mission in the game. I can confirm that this is what happened to me. No kills during the prologue or in the rest of the game, and all of my missions are listed as having no kills on my stat sheets.

Hopefully the devs will take note and release a patch. Theoretically this is something that could easily be unlocked retroactively, so long as all the mission stat pages read "No Kills." Please post in the comments if something similar happened to you.

UPDATE: I've gotten the achievement. Here's what went wrong:

SPOILERS TO FOLLOW

In the final encounter with Nanny Rags / Slackjaw in the sewers, just picking up Nanny Rags' cameo is enough to cause this achievement to glitch out. My advice: Freeze time, pick pocket Nanny Rags key and use it to escape via the back door in her room (next to the furnace) before she comes after you. Rush through the end of the mission and then complete the final two missions and the achievement should pop.

tldr: Don't interact with either Granny or Slackjaw in the sewers, save for stealing Granny's key and running out the back of her apartment.

If you sleep dart anyone and rats eat that person, that counts against you as a kill but may not appear on your stat screen. This is especially the case for Granny Rags.

DO NOT kill anyone in a mission and then reload your save from before you kill them, because somehow the game still tracks that as a kill! Ridiculous. So I'm doing this achievement after the game is patched.

I too am also wondering if you can just mission select and complete each one individually, or have to start a new game?

You probly have to start all over just to be safe, going back to mission select and trying for certain achievements I hear haven't been unlocking for some people myself included with the Art dealer achievement.

RustyF I can't thank you enough! I got Clean Hands and Ghost now following your method. Granny & Jackslaw part really glitched on me. Even though the stat showed 0 kills by sleep-darting either one of them, the game still counted that as a kill. By replaying starting that part and pickpocketing the key only, I needed not replay the entire game again. Thanks

Can you kill the zombie creatures in the sewers?

I got these cheevos without even doing the granny/slackjaw missions. Since they are making them glitchy/harder, I suggest just avoiding them all together until a different play through.

Didn't get it after my first clear (I put down Granny non-lethally), went back loaded the 'Mission' save for 'The Flooded District' and cleared the game from that mission on (this time avoiding Granny by stealing her key and bolting), achievement unlocked.

so when i steal granny's key do i leave from where i came from or do i go to the broken pipe that leads me directly back to where her key unlocks? will she always notice me when i steal it? its just i want the ghost achievement and its pissing me off i was hoping this was my last play through I'm also just using blink as well so i can't slow down time. any suggestions?

She will notice you but she won't be "alerted" for about 15 seconds, so if you freeze time and run to the broken pipe, you should be fine. she's only alerted if you see the three lightning bolts above her head.

Well I guell I belong to this club, I double check the mission stats and I did not kill anybody but the Clean Hands did not unlock. I didn't had to deal with Granny or Jaw at the end of the Flooded District at all, don't know why. But I guess the important question is, is the developer aware of this. I know they are going to release some DLC soon but I didn't read they were working on a patch for this.

Update: I got Clean Hands, so I can confirm that stealing is 100% okay, just don't do the mission. Never mind if it is still active in the quest menu.

CheshireMulisha - exactly the same here. Only thing I can think of is I sleepdarted the weepers when you have to investigate them in between missions.

I got it. On second playthrough I hid the weepers and didn't rob the safe. So it's either of those things that fucks it up if you do the opposite.

This game is so busted. I never kill ANYONE, always check bodies when I lay them down to see if they still say Unconscious, even put the bodies off the ground in case random rats come by and eat them. I always get 1 kill the first time i play a mission. WTF is going on?? Playing each mission twice, when I already have to play the game over again, is getting really f*cking old.

2016 and still shit. Played through game no kills no alerts every level, i checked stats, did not even put more than 5 people to sleep out of fear of rats, did not even kill any targets aswel as no upgrades. Now i have to play through for a 3rd time. Not happy. Only good thing is i can use upgrades next time. Still pissed off though. Cant believe this never got patched. Ruined a perfectly good game for me. Now i have to play again asap so i dont forget everything i did before.

This time i was super carful with the zombie things in the sewer between level 2 and 3, making sure they didnt see me, sleep darting them, and making sure they didnt drwn in the water. Everything else the same. Thats the plan anyway, up to level 4 atm. Il post again when i finish level 9. If it works i guess that was the problem. If it doesnt then screw this game and im done.

It worked got 100% now. Did everything the same except didnt let the weepers b4 level 3 see me and didnt kill them and didnt let them drown. Flew through playthrough with time freeze and blink upgrade, so much easier. I was done in just 4 hours. Now i am at peace with the game. At least it was me at fault probably and not the game, i can deal with that. Im also kind of glad i playedthrough for a 3rd time, i enjoyed being so stealthy and powerful with upgrades.

Also the only time i sleep darted anybody was the 2 thugs with the lady you get the key off of for the roof route to the golden cat whorehouse or whatever its called.

I had this problem and (SPOILER) reloaded a save from the 3rd to last level right before the final Granny spot. Whereas before I knocked her unconscious with sleeping darts and saved Slackjaw, this time I just pickpocketed the key and ran out of the area and finished the level and the last 2 levels again without kills/detection and both Ghost and Clean Hands popped up. I think the game treats Granny as dead if you fuck with her totem at all, even if you do it fully undetected and put her to sleep.

I did this by myself, it is fairly easy and I would say that watching videos is time consuming when you could just play it. I have done clean hands as a separate run from mostly flesh and steel as it is easier.

Just FYI and to confirm I have clean hands and I did the following things:

I did kill people for fun and reloaded so can confirm that the game doesn't count that

I did all the sidequests with nanny and slack jaw

I did not finish this quest line but instead froze time, grabbed her key and left

I did defeat Lord Shaw at the duel BUT I USED THE SLEEP DARTS

I stole Grannys Key and left through the door I came in. Now the sidequest is still active in the next missions and won't go away. Does anybody know if this is a problem?

I didn't get this achievement or ghost even though all my mission stats show that I didn't kill anybody or alert anybody.
I also didn't do any of the Granny quests and only did the 1st slackjaw quest to get the non lethal solution for the golden cat level.
Looks like a replay is needed.... "sigh"

I just got this with the Ghost, Mostly flesh and steel and Shadow. Im not gonna go all out walkthrough so here is a few general tips

First, this must be on a New Game as Big L said. Mission select doesen't count

Never take the exact route! be a ninja, the main path will most likley have enemies everywhere, use rooftops, ledges and lots of cover

Use lean and Keyholes. as long as your entire body is covered they can't see you

Save sleeping darts for the end. At the end i found myself in tight spots that caused some stress, but good timing with the arrows helped me.

Have patience, sometimes you should just sneak through them all instead of taking them out. watch for moments when no one is watching

Save often! each time you enter a new location, take a dude out or just walk a good part, save. If you screw up you should have lost just a few minutes work, not many.

I would also suggest saving the side mission for the High Chaos playthrough, as you have to do two playthroughs for 100% and you can got enough to deal with now.

Warning for people on this to avoid having to do 3 playthroughs.

Mission 7 Flooded District is a long mission especially if you go to get your gear. I played this mission twice neutralizing everyone without being alerted etc. I am a Tenchu vet so this is cake. I get to the end and recap, and first time is says I killed 2 people. Never stabbed anyone or let them fall to the ground (just blink skill). 2nd time I played through and got the end and it said one hostile killed, I didn't even kill the river krust, I tranq darted Slackjaw to get the key from Granny. 3rd time I avoided 90% of people, I tran darted one person, didn't even choke anyone out, I stole the key from Granny before she asked me to kill slackjaw, (per guide above). And recap worked.

2nd warning: After mission 7 debacle I thought okay I am good lets beat the game and get me some clean hands. Game over, and this one doesn't pop. My only explanation is when doing mission recap if it asks you to replay the mission or continue DO NOT REPLAY. The game must still take into account a fictious kill. Create multiple saves and have the starting mission squirreled away and reload that one instead of restarting. Hopefully these words will prevent some from not getting it when they spent a good 15-20 trying to not kill anyone. Good news is if you have Mostly Steel achievement the added powers should expedite this play through.

I just had a minor correction to all these guides.

It is possible to actually get the achievement to pop from the mission select screen. As long as you choose mission 1 "Dishonored" and play through the game like you would normally, not selecting each mission from the mission select screen, it will pop. So you can basically skip the tutorial.

Hope this helps anyone still hunting for this one.

p.s. SAVE A LOT

I actually got this achievement with a whole bunch of others during my first playthrough without to much difficulty. Firstly I want to point out that you don't actually kill any of the assassins attacking you during the Empress' assassination so go nuts.

The following videos are the ones i used to get the Clean the Hands achievement along all of these other achievements

because most of them require that you not be detected or kill anyone on any particular mission. You will get the first five achievements, from bottom to top, on this list by the end of mission 3. I would recommend doing this on your first playthrough.

Not a solution but helpful information to know regarding deaths that will void the achievement.

If you:

a) Put unconscious bodies in water it will count as a kill.

b) Hide an unconscious body somewhere for it to be discovered by rats. The rats will eat the body counting as a kill.

c) Knock someone out on a roof or ledge or move an unconscious body onto a roof or ledge and leave the body, make sure it isn't going to fall off, as if it does fall off for any reason, it will count as a kill towards you.

NOTE! If any of the above happen, although it counts as a kill and thus void the "Clean Hands" achievement, it will not count them as a kill on the mission stats screen so it will still say you have not killed anyone in that particular mission.

I made this mistake, stupidly, on my first encounter with Weepers under the pub. I knocked them out and placed the bodies in water so they wouldn't be found. -.-

I didn't realise until I had completed the game with no detections and what I thought was no kills only for the "Clean Hands" and "Ghost" achievements to not unlock.

This is fairly easy if you be careful with people you knock out/put to sleep. If you leave someone laying on the ground then rats may eat them or weepers may attack them getting you a kill. Make sure to move them to an area that there are no paths for anything to get to. Unconscious characters that fall from a height or into the water will die and it will count against you.

You need to get all the the targets and dispose of them non-lethally. I have a guide here:
DishonoredHidden TrophyThe Hidden Trophy trophy in Dishonored worth 195 pointsContinue playing to unlock this hidden trophy

Killing anything non-human such as rats, dogs, fish, river krusts or anything else won't affect the achievement. The end mission screen tells you if you killed anyone.

Low Chaos

This is a rather difficult achievement. You must avoid the deaths of all civilians, enemies, hounds, and even weepers. It cannot be done by your hands. You should avoid talking and doing missions for Granny Rags, as her wishes are harm against others. Rats and fish are okay to eliminate.

  • Mission 1 Overseer Campbell - Either let him poison the Captain and then choke him out, or follow them into the basement and choke him out.
  • Mission 2 Pendeltons - Do the Slackjaw sidequests and he will offer to take care of the Pendelton twins for you if you get the code to the Art Dealer's safe.
  • Mission 5 Lady Boyle - Search the second floor for clues as to which Boyle you need to capture (it changes). Once you've done that, head downstairs and find a man with rabbit/scarecrow type mask that has random whiskers on it, he'll be wandering around the first floor and talk to you about helping him kidnap his love. After that, figure out a way to get the target into the kitchen so you can knock her out and she can be kidnapped (at least she isn't dead).
  • Mission 6 Lord Regent - Head up to the broadcast tower and talk to the broadcaster who will tell you it'd be a good idea to get the Lord Regents tapes from his safe (935) and broadcast them over the air to dismantle his government from the top down. This will also grant you the political suicide achievement.
  • Mission 7 Daud - Just pickpocket his pouch from him as you go for his key when you finally reach him in Mission 7. This will also unlock an achievement.
  • Mission 7 Slackjaw/Granny  When you see these two at the end of Mission 7, it can get kind of screwy, and the best bet is apparently to just pickpocket the key from Granny and run. Putting her to sleep apparently counts as killing for people who have noticed it.

Do Not

  • Possess people and get unintentional suicide. This means walking them into Wall of Lights, bullets hitting them from other enemies, falling, etc
  • Rewire anything that will kill guards or other people
  • Kill any main targets. You will have to find an alternate way, described in the game
  • Kill Hounds - they are animals but enemies
  • Kill Weepers - they are technically already dead but don't do it
  • Setting a knocked out enemy somewhere high or near water. If they fall they can still die

See "Ghost" achievement for tips to also stack Ghost and Mostly Flesh and Steel.
