How to unlock the Well Mannered achievement in Dishonored - Definitive Guide

You need to finish the mission without causing any guests to panic or guards to give alarm.

Some spoiler free suggestions:

The alarm can be disabled. The city watch officer in the foyer has the key.

A man has a proposal regarding Lady Boyle. Seek him out, convince her to go to the meeting place and ensure his plan comes to fruition.

Alternately, kill the target when you are both unobserved.

Finishing the duel in the garden will not disrupt the party.

Take things lying around. Seriously, everyone else is too.

The achievement will pop when you leave the Boyle Manor grounds.

I did what you suggested and nothing. I can only presume that the entrance to the stair case where there is a guard is where I got told it was a private area. So looks like even that negates the achievement. Otherwise I was very well behaved.

This is how I got this achievement, so if you follow these instructions, it is guaranteed that you will get it.

-Make sure you do not take out your weapons during the party.
-You may kill enemies, IF YOU DO IT WITHOUT ALERTING THEM FIRST, and ONLY out of sight of other guests.
-If you DO kill an enemy, make sure his/her body is placed somewhere where it absolutely will not be found by the other guests.
-You may take part in the duel in the garden against Lord Brisby. Killing him during the duel will not void your achievement.
-Make sure no one sees you carrying the Lady Boyle to the basement, if you choose to do things non-lethally.

I recommend the following path through the party portion of this mission:

Enter the grounds, put your weapons away. Take part in the duel, if you desire, but if you are doing a non-lethal playthrough, killing him WILL void the Clean Hands achievement.

Walk around until you find the man with the odd mask on with whiskers. He will be standing near a wall, and simply approaching him will trigger a cutscene. He will offer to take Lady Boyle away to a secret place, forever, which neutralizes her for you.

Go to the room with the large table of food and drink. Save your game. There will be a doorway off in the corner that leads upstairs, with a single guard posted inside. When you enter, he will approach and warn you away, as this is a restricted area. You can stand on this stair landing as long as you desire. Do not go upstairs yet. As the guard has taken several steps toward you, he is now away from the wall he had his back to. At this point, you can easily get behind him and choke him out. Once you are behind him, ensure that no guests are in front of the doorway to see your actions, and press X to immediately carry the body. If someone sees you, reload and try again. Quickly carry him upstairs, and drop him in the back corner of the bathroom off of the bedroom at the top of the stairs. No one ever enters this room, but your target might enter with you later, depending how you approach her, and if so, you want to ensure she does not see the bodies. Following this outline, however, will prevent her from ever going upstairs.

Go downstairs - you can safely cross the doorway in front of guests and guards, as the landing is not a restricted area - and continue all the way down into the kitchens. There are quite a few maids that go up and down the stairs here. You want to choke them out one by one, and quickly carry each one upstairs, dumping her body on top of the guard you already have upstairs. After each maid, save the game and move on to the next. I had to choke out five before I got them all. If you run into a maid while carrying a body, simply reload and hide for a bit until she gets out of your path.

Search the upstairs for a note about which costume the lady Boyle is in. Alternatively, you can find the guest who wants a drink, get one for her, and she will give away the secret to you.

Once you know who Lady Boyle is, talk to her, and tell her you are trying to save her life and that there is someone at the party who means to kill her. She will ask for more details. Tell her she has to meet someone in the basement. Follow her down, and since you eliminated all of the maids, the basement will be empty. When Lady Boyle stops near the gate, choke her out. Then carry her to her fate below.

For me, the achievement did not pop until I talked to Samuel and ended the level.

I don't know why you troubled yourself with the maids. When I played they all stayed in the kitchen and never went into the actual basement. If you wait for Lady Boyle to meet you downstairs, she stands chockable well out of view of the people in the kitchen.

The maids will usually "patrol" from the kitchen to the main house area, ostensibly to serve the guests. On both of my playthroughs they did so, and on the first one, they caused me some trouble. It's not necessarily necessary :) but is easy to do and can make things easier.

You CAN take part in the duel without voiding clean hands. All you have to do is pick up the pistol, then switch to the sleep darts before walking to the circle. Easy peasy. It counts the duel as a success and the kill count stays at 0.

Maids are everywhere on the main floor of the mansion and in the kitchen, but they never go down the stairs from the kitchen into the basement. So I'm saying wait till you get Lady Boyle all the way down there before choking her unconscious. Do that, and you don't have to carry her unconscious body past anyone, or trouble yourself with choking maids and being discovered by yet another maid.

Its much simpler than the previous guides paint it to be. A young lady in the library will ask for a drink. In the dining room is a punch bowl you can interact with to get a glass for her. Return to the library and hand it to her and she will tell you, as a friend of Lady Boyle, which one is your target. Once discovered, find either the Red, Black, or White target and interact with them. She will ask how you know and you will reveal she is in danger. She will follow or lead you to the cellar where you can either knock her out or tie her up as she thinks its role playing. After that you are free to deliver her and walk out undetected.

Spoiling the party means making the guests upset, so you can kill guards, the maids or anyone else as long as you aren't caught and an alarm isn't rung. I'd recommend starting the level using an invitation either found on the way into the front yard or found in the Art Dealers safe from the Golden Cat mission. Alternate routes are to use the building on the far left near the mansion where the guard and Tall Boy are patrolling. Go up the stairs past the weepers, and out the window on the right to an open window above it. That is the guards barracks which has a key on the wall to unlock the door to the mansion grounds. If you can't or don't want to use those options you can use Blink to get onto the mansion walls between the fence by going from the rooftops to the streetlights to the fence post. However you gain access to the mansion is fine as the guards assume you are rightfully there even if you just jump from the fence in front of them.

Once you get in the mansion you have three options. You can play the game the Boyles want and gradually figure out who the right sister is, with or without help from Ms. White in the Moth mask. You could sneak upstairs by waiting for the guard to leave for the basement and go from room to room to find out which Boyle is which by reading their diaries. Finally, you could just murder all three in secret, usually by using slow time and shadow kill to dispose of the bodies.

The non-lethal option is to go find Lord Brimsby in one of the back rooms. He will explain that he is aware of your mission and in love with your target. He asks that you bring her to him so he can keep her safe. You then are told which one is the target, you then speak to the target, tell them their life is in danger and for them to go to the basement with you. When you get her to the basement, knock her out by choking or sleep dart, just open the door by the nearby switch and carry her down to the waiting boat. You can then either go back to the party or leave by the nearby sewer exit.

You will get the trophy when the level ends after you meet with Samuel as long as when you leave the party is still going.

Mission 5: The Boyle Estate
Mission 5 sends you into a costume party at the Boyle Estate, where you must find and eliminate your target. Simply don't get caught in off limit areas, don't pickpocket, put your weapons away (hold :xbut), don't really get caught doing anything you wouldn't normally do at a party. If people start to scream and run away from you, you're doing something wrong. The achievement unlocks at the end of the mission.
