As you play through the playsets, you'll notice these jukebox-looking things scattered about. Those are the character chests.
How to open them is relatively simple: Look at the character pictured on the chest, load them up, then walk up to the chest and hit X.
Having more characters means more chests to open, but there are more than enough for the characters that come in the starter.

As an addition to EmporerDragon's solution, I noticed in The Incredibles that each character had 3 chests. This could be the same for all worlds, so it's do-able with a single character.
Also, if you have borrowed a friends copy of the game, you can use their characters to get this, with out taking ownership and losing progress.

Character chests are found scattered throughout the 3 play sets and have a picture of which character can open them. There are 3 in each play set for the starter characters, as well as some for the additional purchasable characters. You only need to open 3 throughout all 3 Play Sets for this trophy so no additional characters are necessary. These are cumulative and do not need to be completed in 1 Play Set.
Note: One of the beginning quests in the Pirate play set, called "Treasure for You" will show you the location of one of these types of chests.
