How to unlock the Running Up the High Score achievement in DOOM Eternal - Definitive Guide

Extra life mode is a separate game mode where it plays more like the original doom. Once all you lives run out, that's it game over. You can choose a difficulty so I would recommend play this on I'm too young to die. I would also recommend you play this on your second play through as if you collect everything during this play through, you will have to collect everything again if you are going for (master of fasting) achievement as you can not replay missions in extra life mode.

Note: you can beat the game with more then 10 extra lives. I finish that game with 47 and the achievement pop once the credits rolled.

I would like to add that, even on I'm Too Young to Die, the slayer gates and secret challenges can be challenging, as you cannot come back to them when you have better gear, so it might be worth saving lives by not attempting them.

EDIT: And you can grind out weapon challenges in the ripatorium by exiting to the main menu and re-loading back in

Do cheat codes work (for example, Infinite Ammo?) They apparently don't void other achievements. I'm doing my 100% playthrough without using cheat codes.

NoHeroes94 you can only use cheats by replaying the mission you have previously finished. Since you can’t replay missions on ‘Extra Life Mode’ cheats become un-usable.

My question however is: can you combine both the Extra Life Mode and equipping only one Chrystal and Praetor Suit ability challenges during 1 playthrough on I am to Young to Die?

I have completed the Campaign on Hurt me Plenty, but is the difficulty difference noticable?

Extra lives are everywhere. Theres like 3 or more in every level. You shouldn't need to worry about running out of them.

If you play on ITYTD and collect all extra lives in a level you should be fine. I did ITYTD and the Unmodded challenge on my extra life mode playthrough and beat the game with like 30 extra lives, so its totally doable. Just make sure to pause and take a breath each time The Marauder pops up. Hes really the only enemy that'll take life after life from you if you find yourself going on tilt. Also watch your surroundings. Even on ITYTD it is easy to accidentally back yourself into a corner and get surrounded

Usually the best way to deal with the Marauders is a one-two hit with the super shotgun and ballista. But if there are lots of other enemies around, a good tip is to fire sticky bombs at his feet, or use the rocket launcher lock on and aim off to the side, where they should steer themselves around his shield. Ice bomb instantly kills the ghost dog as well.

Do not attempt the "Can't Perfect Perfection" milestone (Unlock only 1 Praetor Suit perk and 1 Sentinel Crystal) while chasing this achievement. Playing on ITYTD I maxed out at 22 lives, made it to Urdak with 18, but got melted down to 4 before making it to the last level. Only 4 lives to pick up in that level so I have to start over. angry

Just got this on ITYTD with can't perfect perfection, ended with 39 lives. didn't even do my weapons all the way up. The only thing I lost lives to was marauders and the final boss fight. The only real set back was failling to escape the super gore nest when i got turned around which is actually GAME OVER :/ Pretty easy all in all

I destroyed the heart in the super gore nest and when I was escaping from the autodestruct I got lost and died losing all my 23 lives at once when I ran out of time. WTF?

Honestly this isn't too bad if you do a 100% run first. I remembered where 95% of the extra lives I found on my first playthrough were, and found a couple new ones.

For the Khan Maykr I recommend the lock-on rocket launcher mod (don't forget to meat-hook/bloodpunch), and for Icon of Sin, I found the chaingun with the mod for increased fire speed, and vanilla plasma rifle best.

I equipped the rune that let me survive one fatal hit at low health but if I'm honest I didn't see it work, though I only died twice out of my 40 lives.

@NinETaiLShuBZ I've just started the game again, doesn't look like you can use any cheats as its a brand new game mode.

Yeah this was not nearly as bad as I was expecting. I think I finished with 37 or 38 lives. Thanks to I'm Too Young to Die.

Hiya, I just started this last night, disappointed it's the same Champaign again, I was expecting some original doom campaign from the 90s.

Totally doable, managed it with 50 lives on ITYTD difficulty.

Don't bother with the bonus encounters, most of them are not deadly but a couple really really are. And dying to them is not worth it. Utilize fast travel and automap to get all 1UPs at the end of the levels, be aware of the time limit ending at Super Gore Nest, as it sounds like it eats all your lives if the timer runs out. You only really need some of the Sentinel Batteries to open up the upgrade doors in the Fortress Of Doom, so focusing too much on the trickier challenges is also not worth losing your rhythm over.

Why did it give me an option to start over once I died half way through once and had about 20 extra lives yet it reset my campagne?

@KillerZ x Ace I had this same thought. I don't think i would do another play through just to get unmodded so if it can be done easily enough with this achievement that would be good. Let me know how you get on.

Also are there points of no return where if you don't have x lives by here go back?

Killer and Three Daug, I am doing both at the same time. It isnt too bad, just make sure you go after every secret. I recommend taking the Health upgrade and the faster dash recharge. The bonus health is super helpful (or it would be if I picked that instead of extra ammo like an idiot) and the faster dash recharge is pretty much essential compared to like, every other praetor upgrade.

I last finished the Arc Complex level with like 25 or so lives playing on ITYTD, so I imagine you should be fine with careful gameplay. But I think at this point I am going to stop doing the slayer gates, because I want to minimize the possible Marauder encounters. Even on ITYTD he is challenging

It is highly recommended to attempt this as a second playthrough of the game after having completed it once to know where to go and what to do and to also attempt this on the easiest difficulty, though these things are of course up to you. You can choose 'Extra Life mode' from the main menu when starting a new game, it is below the difficulty options. You can then choose the difficulty of this mode after selecting it.

You will begin the game with 3 lives in the top left of the screen and can then pick more up from around the levels as you progress. It seems there are 3 lives to pick up in each new area and with some levels having more than 1 main area you can find dozens of them. If you run out of lives you will have to start the game again from the beginning, which is why this is recommended on a second playthrough. If you're already familiar with the mission layouts, and keep checking your map for the locations of the lives then you are very unlikely to die very often and once you have built up a decent stock of lives, above 20 for example, you can relax a little knowing you can afford to die a few times.

I personally had 44 lives in my inventory by the end of the game, just to give some perspective on the amount of available lives.

If you miss a collecting item, you won't be able to return to the level after finishing the game, so I advise you to collect everything during a normal game.

In this mode, you can also choose any difficulty. If you die, you will be reborn immediately in the same place. There will be a lot of lives scattered throughout the levels, collect, save and try not to die. If you lose a life and then decide to start from the checkpoint, your life will not be restored. If you decide to replay the task again, your lives will be restored (you will also have to collect collectibles again).

At the Bloody Super Nest level at the end, when you need to escape within a certain time, first save to a flash drive. If you don't make it in time, the game is over, regardless of the number of extra lives.

I advise you to immediately open all the items on the map for 3 points in the research branch so that you can see the extra life. I played on easy for the second time, completed it in a couple of evenings with a reserve of 50 lives, so there’s definitely no need to collect everything.

It is best when you play for the first time to go through the campaign NOT in this mode, on the second or higher difficulty level, getting the challenge and pleasure from the game, and also trying to collect everything. And then speedrun in a new cell on the lowest difficulty for the achievement.

Missions cannot be replayed. If you missed the collection and moved to another level, start the game again. As for me, go straight through in this mode, since you are collecting and there is a greater chance that you will find additional life along with the collection. And then speedrun as usual. If you have very little health and will die soon, reload the checkpoint. This is how life is not wasted unless you die.)
Falling into an abyss does not count as death.

There were no problems with this trophy. After the usual company, I passed in this mode. During the last mission there were 46 lives left. If you missed a life, then before the end of the level you have access to fast travel on this map. You go and collect life, and after that you finish the level. After the first playthrough there should be no problems. Upgrade a double-barreled shotgun for fire damage while pulling (there will be permanent armor), a rocket launcher with auto-aim, a minigun for no overheating, and a plasma gun with thermal shock.

Start playing right away in Extra Life mode and on the easiest difficulty. By the end of the campaign, you will receive 3 achievements at once.
  • For completing the story campaign
  • For collecting 20 extra lives
  • For this achievement
Cheat codes and the ability to select chapters do not work in this mode.
Therefore, in any case, you will have to go through the company again in order to complete the achievement for completing the chapter with the “Hunger” cheat.
