I wanna add that it wasn't till my fourth BFG kill that the achievement finally popped. It took me two direct hits with the BFG to kill the demon that got me the achievement were as the ones before only took one. It's likely you may have to do a decent amount of damage with the weapon before killing them with it in order for it to count. Just a thought.
