As of the 6.66 update, the way the former-DLC works is slightly different. You either have to earn enough XP to unlock the item(s). or complete a challenge to unlock them. Either way, armor pieces will be locked until you hit a certain level.
The earliest you can unlock a single piece of Robotic armor as of this writing are a few challenges unlocked at Echelon (DOOMs version of Prestige) 5. Without challenges, it looks like the first piece unlocks at Echelon 7.

There are actually a few challenges that don't require Echelon, but they're for straight kills, and the lowest one requires 3400. You'll likely hit the rank required before then. Don't know why the Armor Styles page says challenges are accessible at Echelon V.

Beyond straight up kill challenges (like the 3400 challenge mentioned), is it confirmed that you can't unlock this achievement until Echelon V? That sounds like quite a lot of leveling.

It's not that bad. Granted it's double exp right now but even without it you'll probably be getting at least a level a game. Once the game dies again though it'll be a pain.

The MP is good if you are into the retro kind of gaming, but besides that it's nothing new or a thing to endure for only 40 gamerscore.
This goes on par with that Max Payne 3 achievement where you have to finish the entire game without dying once with no save points......For a lousy 10 gamerscore......

Easy challenge to get it with is the one for Quick Draw kills. (Kill an enemy with damage from both weapons) You only need 10 and you could just equip the super shotgun and combat shotgun.

Also Glory Kills. Any Demon who uses melee attacks gets glory kills with them. There's a challenge for 5.

If you're decent enough, you can get upwards of 20k exp. I was getting 15k on average, would level 3 or 4 times a match. Still will take for damn ever unless they do another double exp soon, but.... eh.

It only takes 5,000 exp per rank so you can easily prestige in 3 hours. It’s been 2 days since I started and I’m on prestige 3 already.

To those who Unlocked a piece of Robotic Armour with a Challenge, it took my achievement something like half a day before it pop on the screen. There seems to be an issue from the server side.

Easiest way to get this is reach prestige (echelon) 5 and get 5 glory kills with a demon or normally and you’ll unlock your first robotic armor piece

I’d say anywhere to 20-50 people. I started grinding this achievement, on my 3rd prestige about halfway to 4, with about 5 hours in.
Weekends are the best, and evenings. There’s a dozen or so max prestige’d players who still play. They will probs wreck you which is why I think they still play the game. Been playing for about a month now and there’s about 5-6 of them that are actually good. You’ll learn their names really quick lol. But I also don’t get wrecked by them anymore :D. They just know all the ins and outs of the game, always get demon and stick to the best guns.
Combat shotgun, grenade launcher, static rifle and plasma rifle are the best, super shotgun and heavy rifle are okay. Always be moving and stick with a teammate. Kite demons and switch to grenade launch or rocket launcher to take them out if they are being a problem. Magnet rune is the best one. Boots are good once you figure out how to use them and the maps. Grenades are good for objective modes.
I pretty much can always find a game if I play evenings or weekends. Just be prepared to have to face the same people over and over(it’s really not bad).
You also have to play the playlist with all the game modes, I forget the name, and if you can’t find a game, try switching to EU server. That usually works for me and I can’t notice the difference with connection.
