How to unlock the Botanist achievement in Dragon Age: Inquisition - Definitive Guide

once you reach the Sky hold you will be given 3 quests,
one for watchtowers.
one for the Courtyard.
and one for the garden.
these quests will upgrade your sky hold,
once you have the required materials to construct the garden choose to build it on the "inspect requisitions" bench then you will have to go to the garden part of the map (top right next to the war room) you can fast travel right to it to save time.dance

go to the mission in the center of the garden and select it you will have the choice to turn the area into a garden or a chantry UPDATE thankyou to Soschiro for pointing out even if you pick chantry you will still get a few pot plants for growing but not as many unless you pick the garden option.

pick the garden and then leave the area and return, 6 pot plants will have spawned in the corner of the area (top right) plant something in each one and check back after each quest (or whenever you go back to sky hold to collect them .
There is no need to re-plant as they can grow again after you harvest them rinse and repeat
and before you know it you will have your achievement. toast

Thankyou Lliryn Dres for pointing that out, that will easily speed up the process
and I forgot to mention that the missions are the crafting ones that you can find on the bench of requisitions at the quatermaster in the building near where Cassandra is standing top left of Sky hold

I did not get the missions immediately after gaining access to skyhold, I think I had to pick something up from the desk in the room above the war room.. But I could be wrong

I couldn't find these missions when I first arrived at Skyhold - they appeared after I left to do a couple of side quests and came back.

There is a item on the desk in your Quarters that allows you to access the skyhold upgrades. When I picked it up it said requisition for upgrades to skyhold.

There are a few pots available even before you upgrade anything.

Does this achievement work if you collect the plants post game? As it reads "in a single play through" I assume you need to do this BEFORE the Corypheus fight?

@Gentleman gamer It can be done after the fight it just means it cant be on different storylines but if its the same character save file you should be fine

@Hahaman4real it should work like that
if you just plant them and fast travel or go wander somewhere for awhile they will eventually grow

There is no point to the Chantry upgrade if you were wondering, it does nothing. Go for the extra pots. Also, I used them to grow the rarer herbs used to upgrade my potions and tonics. The fully upgraded resistance tonics are super useful against dragons.

Those missions were given to me automatically upon arriving at Skyhold they go under requisitions. Also wanted to point out the garden always has three pots in it from the moment you arrive and in order to get seeds you need to plant you need to pick up plants in the wild which give them at random finally just wanted to say every time you leave and go back the plants are ready so if you want to speed the process up just fast travel to another zone and back repeatedly.

Full credit goes to Illusions1980's post Skyhold Gardening 101 on gamefaqs.

To get this achievement, you need to
- have unlocked Skyhold and the plant pots.
- understand that plants in this game grow by travelling between zones, not by time.
- harvest 50 plants

When you plant a new seed, you have to travel to 2 zones before returning to Skyhold and harvest the herb (first is to have the sprout in the pot, second is to have the herb).
If you have already planted and all you see is the sprout, you just need to travel to 1 zone and return.
I usually pick Val Royeux as destination because I don't even need to select a full party.

Please note when picking upgrades that the Chantry garden gives you 2 pots, but the Herb Garden gives you 6 pots.

Happy harvesting!

Nabbing this trophy takes some time and patience to get. To harvest herbs you first need to have Skyhold unlocked. Once you begin to rebuild Skyhold, you can venture outside into the garden (located just off the main keep, the first set of doors on the left from the entrance if you are heading towards the throne).

Here you will notice three empty pots near the wall by the entrance in the courtyard itself. Simply walk up to each of these pots and interact with them (press X). Here you can scroll through your inventory and select an herb to plant. Don't worry a lot about your herb selection as you can change the herb planted at any time.

After you have planted herbs in every container, simply visit the garden each time you return to Skyhold and harvest these plants. As of this writing, it takes roughly one hour of in game time for a common plant to grow enough to Harvest, with the rarer herbs taking a little longer. However, plants will not grow if you remain in the courtyard area so you need to leave Skyhold each time after you harvest. Another good note, your choice of herb does not matter. You could have all Elfroot and you will still be able to unlock this trophy.

I personally unlocked this by visiting the garden each time I returned to Skyhold, before heading off to another area. It is also possible to get more pots for plants by upgrading the courtyard through a requisition. Speak to the person located in the small hut near Cassandra's location in Skyhold and you will obtain a requisition to upgrade the Garden of Skyhold. Once you fill the requisition you will be able to choose either a Garden upgrade or a Chantry upgrade. I chose the Garden upgrade (on the left of the choice menu) and gained an additional 3 pots for planting in.

One of the upgradeable locations you have in Skyhold is your Garden. As soon as you have control of Skyhold, there are two pots you may immediately begin using there, but first, you must have seeds. You will now have the ability to randomly harvest seeds from herbs you gather in the field or choose to purchase them from herbalists. By visiting your Quarters to the north of your throne, a codex entry on your desk will provide a quest called Greener Gardens. Collect the required materials and visit the garden to build a better structure, allowing six pots instead of the original two to speed up the process (do not choose the Chantry option).

Using seeds you have collected, you may plant them in your collection of pots, and they will bear yield after you leave for a short while and come back. Collect herbs from these pots 50 times to unlock the achievement.

The first time you get to Skyhold, you won't be able to immediately harvest herbs because the door that leads to the garden is blocked. It's the first door on your left when entering the great hall. Just do some quests and at some point the door will unlock. When you enter the garden directly in front of you, behind the wall are two pots. In these pots you can plant seeds from various herbs. Once you unlock the Garden, you'll also receive the "Nursery Seeds" quest which allows you harvest seeds from herbs as well. Once you have some seeds, go to any of the pots and press to plant a seed. The seeds will turn into herbs over time. Herbs will grow each time you leave Skyhold. Just keep checking back and harvest them whenever you get back to Skyhold. Or leave Skyhold, come back and repeat if necessary in order to harvest them as soon as possible. Each seed can be used an infinite amount of times. You can plant and harvest the same herb 50 times or mix it up if you want, it doesn't matter.

If you want to speed up this progress, you can upgrade the Garden and get six pots instead. In order to do this, you'll need to complete the "A Greener Garden" Skyhold quest. Once you've completed this quest, you get the choice between a Chantry Garden and a Herb Garden. The Chantry has two pots, while the Herb Garden has six.

The "A Greener Garden" quest can be started in Skyhold. Go to your Quarters which is at the door on the left of your Throne. On the desk in your Quarters you will find a letter. Take it to activate all three Skyhold Upgrade quests. The "A Greener Garden" quest requires the following to be completed:
- 30 Spindleweed
- 30 Elfroot
- 30 Blood Lotus
- 1 Logging Stand

Spindleweed is mostly found near water in The Hinterlands. Elfroot can be found pretty much everywhere, but The Hinterlands is a good place. Blood Lotus is also found near water. Storm Coast is a pretty good place for this. All these can also be bought from The Crossroad Merchant in The Hinterlands.

Logging stands are more difficult to find, as they won't show up on your map. If you want them on your map however, acquire the Forward Scouts Inquisition Perk. Or use

for logging stands and quarries.
