How to unlock the Dragons' Bane achievement in Dragon Age: Inquisition - Definitive Guide

Hey guys I am currently working towards this achievement and I thought to share this video which gives you all locations of the dragons I have found on youtube

Here's a update for you guys so the achievement doesn't glitch is to save before dragon encounters and see if the counter goes up if it doesn't reload and do it again thanks to everyone who commented to clarify that this works

Update thanks to Paul Doyle you can intact redo the same dragon over and over my achievement was glitched at 70% and had 8 dragons killed I then done the second from last dragon which made it 90% in fact it only made it to 80% so I redid the lvl 19 dragon which is the 7th dragon in the video which gave me the achievement so you can infact reload your save at any dragon and rekill the dragon

Edit: thank you arador for this:
Arador If your Xbox Tracker doesn't move try going into the Journal, across to collections, and as soon as I selected High Dragons my Xbox Tracker moved up.

Hmm, I guess I'm screwed too; killed 4 dragons so far (and ingame quest tracked says 4/10 killed), but achievement tracker only shows 3/10...

ok so for anyone trying to do this achievement and doesnt want the glitch is that I took precautionary steps before i started killing dragons. I made a save before I killed the first dragon. Once I killed all 10 and only 9 registered I reverted back to that original save i made so long ago, killed the very first dragon in the Hinterlands and Achievement popped! hope this helps someone

This achievement glitched on me, my in game quest counter totaled one more than my achievement counter. What I did, was save before the last dragon I was supposed to kill and after I killed him, I reloaded and killed him again. It worked and the achievement popped.

I'm not sure why this worked but it did. Hope it works for you, if your counter gets stupid too.

FYI you don't have to drop down to kill the last dragon in the video. If you go left and work your way down and around there is a tunnel that leads to the dragon. Also if you go right (from where he starts in the video) you'll find a fast travel point so if you get wiped and need potions you can go to camp then come right back.

It said I only had 40% when my achievement popped. I had reloaded and killed a couple of the dragons, but my progress never "appeared" to move up from repeat kills, however your progress actually will go up. Just ignore the counter and keep reloading until you have killed a total of 10 high dragons.

WeighingBrute, how did you do yours by reloading? Ive done the western approach one (I made sure it counted), re-loaded a save and did it again and my achievement didn't progress. Did you reload the auto save? Or a main save? Did you kill another dragon between?

Wat I did was originally I done most of the dragons until I Came across the video but it got glitched when I killed 6th dragon but I saved before encountering the next dragon killed him then reloaded my save again once I killed him achievement popped

Just thought I'd clarify what others (Paul) have said above. It's confirmed that replayingthe same Dragon will net you the achievement, provided that dragon isn't the one that glitched on you. So as the Crestwood dragon was the one that glitched on me, the 3 times I killed it to try to get it to count didn't count toward my 10.
Also confirmed that it doesn't show in the progress tracker on the achievements app

My achievement popped at 12 dragons. I killed all 10 in my first play thru and 2 dragons into my hard mode play through it popped. The Crestwood dragon was one of the 2 I killed in my 2nd game.

Would like to also confirm the reload trick. I was ten percent behind my actual progress but I had reloaded three dragons and actually got the achievement only fighting 9 of the ten dragons overall. My percentage jumped from 70 to unlocking the achievement.

Does anyone know if you can do it across separate playthroughs? Got 90% and had company so I accidentally saved over the save from before the 10th dragon.
Worst case scenario I have my other already finished playthrough that I can go kill them all.

Had mine glitch at 2 , so at the next dragon I saved ,killed it, reloaded and killed again up to 3. Then at 5 it got stuck again and reloading didn't make it move. the achievement unlocked though after 5 more kills. So from my point of view the tracker was glitched not the achievement itself.

I definitely killed a lot more than 10 dragons before it popped, so there is something wrong with the internal counter. But I just kept reloading prior saves and killing dragons over again and eventually my progress tracker jumped from 70% straight to unlocked (I had it snapped while doing this).

Reloading the game and re-killing dragons never moved my achievement progress. Finally got this achievement after killing the 10th dragon with achievement counter showing 90%. The in-game dragon tracker was accurate.

It seems either they "patched" it or the glitch is glitched. I was on 9/10 in game tracker 8/10 achievement tracker like everyone here says, as the Crestwood one doesn't seem to track. However killing the 10th dragon got me the achievement, without having to reload and kill for a second time. Either it's been patched to "Achievement progress 10/10 OR Dragon Hunter Quest: Completed", the achievement tracker tracks it without showing it, or the glitch glitched and unlocked anyway.
Good luck people! You might unlock it normally even with the tracker being off.

So if that was what you are looking for then you really should 1 either write your own guide once you have found them 2 used one of the other guides and done it that way why should one rant on about they wanted a writing solution when it's ten times easier to actual see it visually if writing is easier why waste your time on commenting on my solution if you have not watched the video why should one person share there views when it's helped alot of people find these dragons and helped them

have they patched this? I've killed 4 dragons so far, with the storm coast one the last one I killed, and the dragon hunter quest says 4, but my achievement counter is a 30%, I'm guessing that each one killed counts as 10%, I reloaded my save before killing the Storm Coast one and after killing it my tracker is still at 30%.

I appreared to have the same problem. Tracker wouln't move from 3/10 I kept killing the fiorst 4 dragons over and over to see which one would trigger it. But all of a sudden the achievement unlocked. I must have killed the first 4 dragons 10 times, so it does track your dragon kills even if the tracker doesn't go up. Worth a try for anyone that might be stuck.

This has glitched for me too.
I was on 90% after killing the final dragon in Emprise. The quest is complete in the journal.
I was about to try again and the game updated. I think because I reloaded at this point to just before I killed the final dragon my achievement went down to 80% and is stuck even after killing the dragon again.
I'm totally pissed off after 100+ hours of gameplay.

Mine popped after I had killed 8 dragons in total. 5 in one playthrough, 2 of the same dragons killed previously in another playthrough, then the Jaws of Hakkon dragon. Tracker remained at 50%, so I was surprised when it popped.

Yeah I can verify the game is sometimes a little buggy on achievements. I've killed 4 dragons so far and only 2 have been registered according to the tracker. I also hit level 20 but it's stuck on 80%.

So I guess I'll be getting a couple of achievements on a second playthrough. Annoying but not the end of the world. I did plan a few diff characters anyway.

Can confirm that killing the same Dragon again works as at December 12th... kill Vinsomer at the Storm Coast to make my glitched 9th kill (achievement said 8th kill) and reloaded... after killing it again the tracker didn't move (maybe because it was snapped) so reloaded and killed it again... and the Achievement popped.

I killed all the dragons in the main game and went back and none of them showed up in the locals they were before. I was stuck at 90% even though I killed all ten. But there is good news. If you happen to buy the DLC that just came out you can get this chievo when you kill the Dragon. he is a frost dragon and as long as you have resistance to cold damage and some leveled up mages to protect you, you should have no problem. The chievo popped right after I killed him.

My in-game tracker says I've killed 10 of 10. My xbox achievement tracker says 90%. No cheevo. I am going to be playing a higher difficulty on my next play through so I was hoping to get this taken care of beforehand. Is it cumulative? Or do I have to kill 10 dragons on next play through as well?

Many of my achievements for this game seem to be glitched, including this one. While another account on my xbox was playing this game with me logged in also I received progress towards multiple achievements. I received 10% for this achievement without killing any dragons and was able to unlock the mount related to your first dragon kill without killing any dragons. I did not receive the achievement for killing 1 dragon though. Now I have just truly killed my first dragon and I still have not received the achievement but my progress for this one has gone up to 20%. Also my progress for Peerless(Rank 10 inquisition) has been at 90% since I was rank 6 and now I just hit rank 10 and it did not give the achievement. Not really sure what to do other than just keep playing since my character is lvl 16 on nightmare, I just hope that the achievement for a nightmare completion isn't messed up since the other account is not playing on nightmare.

I used this achievement guide from WikiGameGuides. He shows where all 10 dragons are and he also gives the amount of HP they have(He was playing on nightmare difficulty)

0:00 Ferelden Frostback - Hinterlands - Level 12, 105k health
0:56 Northern Hunter - Crestwood - Level 13, 118k health
1:39 Abyssal High Dragon - Western Approach - Level 14, 135k health
2:58 Gamoran Stormrider - The Exalted Plains - Level 15, 150k health
3:57 Greater Mistral - Emerald Graves - Level 17, 188k health
4:41 Vinsomer - Storm Coast - Level 19, 226k health
5:52 Sandy Howler - Hissing Wastes - Level 20, 246k health

6:33 FINAL 3 Dragons

6:59 Hivernal - Emprise du Lion - Level 19 , 226k health
7:32 The Kaltenzahn - Emprise du Lion - Level 21, 267k health
8:03 The Highland Ravager - Emprise du Lion - Level 23, 311k health

(before you give me a "thumbs down" on this or any other solution. Tell what I can do to fix it)

Here are our collection of videos of each Dragon and its respective location, including any pertinent information that may be required to fight them.

I use a Knight-Enchanter which makes taking on these Dragons really easy.

These are not guides but merely refrences so that you will know what to expect when the time comes.

Happy Dragon Slaying and thanks for watching!

For those whose achievement glitched at 90% after completing the main story, you can get the last dragon by completing the Jaws of Hakkon DLC. This was an unexpected surprise for me tonight.

Bit of advice, save before doing the last dragon, which should be in Emprise. If you dont you can miss this achievement as it doesnt seem to count them properly. I had to do the last dragon twice to get this achievement.

Dragon Bane Achievement glitched.
I am playing NIGHTMARE mode.

I also had the same problem.
Seems Xbox was only registering 8/10 when the journal was showing 9/10.
I had 1 more dragon to kill and I should get 10/10
Last one was " Highland Ravager"
Iv attempted 5 times and I couldn't beat him. I was annoyed that he was kicking my butt and already pissed that the game was not registering one of my dragon kills. I kept thinking.. am I going to let this achievement go and let it bother me forever? or replay the 100 hour game again.

I think I may have found a solution to fix the missing dragon count kill.
This is AFTER I installed the Feb 2015 patch. This works even AFTER the latest patch of fixing money glitches, etc.

I know I ONLY needed 1 more dragon kill for the achievement.
I decided to load an old save. Went to Hinterlands dragon.
The reason I loaded this is because, I thought maybe I killed him at too high of a level? Was just a thought. As he was one of my last few dragons I killed.

Anyways, after reload. I was not strong enough to beat him on nightmare.
Frustrated. I changed it to Casual. Just to see what happens.
I killed the Hinterlands dragon and the achievement POPPED!

The change from Nightmare to Casual some how glitched the system to register this another dragon kill.

Just a FYI. The Xbox Achievement popped. However, Dragon Hunter now shows 1/10.
It no longer shows 9/10 because I changed the level from Nightmare to Casual.

Good luck all. Hope it works for you.

This is not a guide but rather a tip.
This trophy tends to glitch for some players (for me as well, never easy trophy hunting I guess, ha?) and they don't get it after defeating their 10th High Dragon. If that happened to you as well don't worry. Just load the game before the fight and slay it again.
If you are doing you first playthrough on Nightmare like me then don't leave last dragon in "Emprise du Lion". I ended up defeating twice Highland Ravager. Even if Highland Ravager ended up beign your 10th dragon to defeat it is still easily doable even on Nightmare with Rogue, Blackwall, Solas, Vivienne.
If you have more questions I am happy to answer them.

same thing happened to me. I had saved Highland Ravager 'til last, and it didn't pop. Luckily my previous save was just before Vinsomer (The Storm Coast). Unleashed all my party's focus spells (that i has been saving for Ravager) on the poor bugger, and wiped him out in a couple of minutes. Trophy popped as soon as he died.

The glitch doesn't always correct itself when defeating the 10th dragon again. First time I defeated the Highland Ravager, the game crashed to 'desktop'. Second time, the dragon quest completed and so on, but no trophy. Third time: again the loot and completion of dragon quest, but no trophy.

- The Hinterlands (Fire, level 12): Travel to the northeastern camp and head through the tunnel just north. As you exit, the dragon will be flying above, and will land in the area just north of the dragonlings.

- Crestwood (Electricity, level 13): South of the keep (or far south of New Crestwood) will be a shoreline. Beside the water in a vast sandy area is a desolate structure, and perched atop is the dragon. You will see it easily from a distance.

- Western Approach (Fire, level 14): South of the southernmost camp will be an NPC named The Researcher; complete his quest line to lure the dragon out.

- The Exalted Plains (Electricity, level 15): In the northern part of the map (just south of Riverside Garrison), you will discover an area that triggers an operation on the War Table. Complete it, come to the area again, and the rubble will be removed. The dragon will be waiting for you on the other side (you must complete the Dark Hand puzzle to progress through to her).

- Emerald Graves (Cold, level 17): Travel to Direstone Camp in the northeast, then proceed over the river further northeast, and when you hit the tomb, head northwest. She will be waiting for you on the northern edge in a pile of rubble.

- The Storm Coast (Electricity, level 19): Follow the coast south (west when able) from the starting camp and you will eventually run into a Dwarven entrance that's sealed. To open this door, you need to receive and complete the quest from Cullen involving stopping Samson's smugglers and their shipments.

Battle your way through the cave and take out a Red Lyrium Behemoth. After that battle, you will find a row boat that will take you out into the middle of the sea to Dragon Isle. You will find the dragon here.

- Hissing Wastes (Fire, level 20): Travel to Sand Crags Camp, and from here, you can head east towards the mountains (or northeast from the initial starting camp). On the mountainside will be two large stone figures you can pass between. She will be located beyond this path in a large open area.

- Emprise du Lion (Cold, level 19): After completing Taking Back the Lion, you are able to take the keep just west of Tower Camp. After doing so, head to the east of Tower Camp and you will discover a bridge in disrepair. Once you have, an operation will appear on your War Table; complete it to cross the bridge. The dragon will be perched on top of the first coliseum, so make your way up to confront her.

- Emprise du Lion (Cold, level 21): Continue past the previous dragon's coliseum on to the next to confront the second dragon.

- Emprise du Lion (Fire, level 23): The third coliseum will have an entrance you may drop down into. If you prefer not to, you may continue past this entrance towards the bridge and take a right onto a path into the arena. The third and final dragon of the zone is located inside.

Please note that this achievement is very glitchy for most players. Upon killing one of the dragons, odds are it will count in game, but not on your achievement tracker. To circumvent this, reload a save before killing a dragon and repeat the process. This repeat kill will not affect anything in game, but for some reason, it tracks for a second time, enabling you to hit 10/10 and unlock the achievement.

Dragons are one of the strongest enemies in the game. There are a total of 10 Dragons that you can defeat. They won't respawn once defeated. If you leave mid fight, they will regain their health. Dragons aren't that difficult, just make sure to match their level or be at least close to it. Their difficulty depends entirely on what difficulty you're playing and you and your companion's levels. Make sure to use tactical mode to see the Dragon's strength and weaknesses.

Here's a list of all the Dragons in order of their level with their location and any prerequisites.

Fereldan Frostback - Level 12 - The Hinterlands

Northern Hunter - Level 13 - Crestwood

Abyssal High Dragon - Level 14 - The Western Approach

You need to lure this dragon before you can attack it. In order to do this, you'll need to start the "Abyssal High Dragon" quest. In order to start this quest, you'll need to complete multiple quests for Researcher Frederic. If you go to Location Nr1 you'll find the Draconology quest that wants you to find Frederic. Frederic can be found at Location Nr2. Go to Frederic and complete each quest he gives you to lure the dragon. You'll need to complete the following quests: A Manuscript of Some Authority, Draconology, Hunting Patterns, How to Lure a Dragon, Frederic's Livelihood, Sharper White Claws. Once all those are done, you'll receive the "Abyssal High Dragon" quest in which you'll need to kill the Dragon at Location Nr3.

Gamoran Stormrider - Level 15 - The Exalted Plains

Before you can reach this Dragon, you'll need to go to Location Nr1 and unlock an operation there. Once you've claimed it, go to your War Table and start the operation, which will open the path to the Dragon. On your path to the dragon you'll need to solve a puzzle inside The Dead Hand dungeon (Location Nr2) before you can continue. This involves controlling and positioning of your characters and three companions.

You can actually skip the puzzle entirely. "If you fast travel to the camp and then walk forward towards the ruins, you can go left at some point in those ruins (instead of continuing straight ahead and going to 'The Dead Hand' cave). This will take you straight to the dragon area (The Crow Fens). You'll actually end up closer to the dragon." Thanks Aruberikku.

Greater Mistal - Level 17 - Emerald Graves

Vinsomer - Level 19 - The Storm Coast

You can only get here by using a boat. The boat is located deep in a dungeon (Location Nr1). This dungeon is locked however, and to unlock it you need to start the "Red Water" quest. You unlock the Red Water quest by going to your War Table, on the Ferelden side is an operation called "Red Templars on the Storm Coast". Unlocking this operation will start the Red Water quests. If you don't see the Red Templars operation, it means you haven't progressed enough into the story. During or after the side quest you'll be able to use a boat to get to the Dragon (Location Nr2).

Sandy Howler - Level 20 - Hissing Wastes

Hivernal - Level 19 - Emprise Du Lion
Kaltenzahn - Level 21 - Emprise Du Lion
Highland Ravager - Level 23 - Emprise Du Lion

These Dragons require you to capture the Suledin Keep first (Location Nr2). As soon as you enter Emprise Du Lion, talk to the towns people (Location Nr1). A woman called Poulin will give you a quest called "Take Back the Lion". Finish this quest to receive the "Capturing Suledin Keep" quest. Once you've captured the keep, go to location Nr3 and unlock the operation there. Now go to your War Table and find the operation on the Orlais side of the table. Complete the operation and you'll be able to get to these three dragons (Location Nr4, 5, 6).
