How to unlock the Well-Read achievement in Dragon Age: Inquisition - Definitive Guide

Veilfire runes are runes hidden away in dungeons and can only be found by shining veilfire on them (veilfire is a green, magic fire that wizards can use as torches).

I found my first in a dungeon near Master Dennets farm when you visit him to procure horses for the inquisition. The dungeon is

At the moment I do not know how many veilfire runes are to be found in total, will update the solution when I find out. This game has an absurd amount of content so it takes a while to plow through it.

Do you have to do anything other than discover it? I found the one in the dungeon in the Hinterlands. Made it show up on the wall with the veilfire, but no achievement. Any ideas?

No, that should be it. You should also get a reward (typically a rune schematic) for finding it. However, you will find several more throughout the game, I have found about 5. If you enter a dungeon with a veilfire brazier outside there is a decent chance that there is i rune inside.

Just to confirm are you viewing said rune with the veilfire lantern in hand? Make sure the character interacting with the rune is the one holding it.

Also so far I've found runes in every wilderness area, those areas you can setup camps in.

Yeah it's glitched for me. I found dozens of velfire runes and nothing has unlocked for me... God I hate glitched achievements... the developers have really dropped the ball this year.

For some reason, the first time I took the torch and approached the rune, the achievement wouldn't unlock. I loaded the earliest save in Hinterland, I entered the cave and this time I succeeded.

For the people that, like me, missed the first veilfire rune in the hinterlands here is a video showing the cave and the rune. Hope this helps

I have found a solution which is really easy to find and hard to mis. When you get to Fallow Mire, there are several places you need to energize and lit a brazier on a column. This gives you veilfire torch. ON the other side of the column there is a crest looking thing, examine it and there you go. Juts got the achievement this way yesterday while replaying Inquisition with my son.

Within several of the explorable areas, there are lanterns that can only be lit by a mage. I know there is one in the Western Approach but I have also seen another in Exalted Plains. These runes unlock crafting schematics.

The one is the Western Approach is the one that I completed. It can be found right after entering Coracavus as part of the Trouble With Darkspawn quest. Right after you enter, there will be an area that is a jail/torture chamber. The lantern is located in one of the cells and the rune you need to find is located in a room by the stairs.

That is everything that you need. Enjoy the new rune schematic!

You can get this as early as the beginning of The Hinterlands. Take the eastern road out of the Crossroads and north slightly until you run into a human scout standing beside a fork in the road; continue past her underneath an arch and into an area called the East Road. Slightly further east, you will run across a Dalish mage fighting a Shade. Assist her, engage in conversation, and she will inform you of a potential relic hidden in the cave behind her, initiating a quest that is unrelated. At the entrance of this cave, Solas will be required to interact with a pile of rubble using  (unless you are a mage), clearing the way. Inside and to your left will be an interactive torch that requires a mage to use. Once again, switch to Solas and use  (unless you are a mage) to create a plume of Veilfire. Before using it, clear the entire area of enemies, as performing anything other than movement will cause your controlled character to drop the Veilfire torch.

Once the area is free of hostiles, interact with the Veilfire using  again (character choice does not matter once it is lit) and walk down the stairs to the end of the cavernous structure. When facing the far wall opposite the stairs, there will be a collapsed part of the building with glowing runes on it, and as you approach, a party member will comment on how the runes are reacting to the Veilfire. Interact with the runes using  to collect a Veilfire Rune and unlock the achievement.

Runes are special crafting materials with which you can upgrade your weapons with to do better damage against specific enemy types or add an element to it. Veilfire runes are hidden throughout the game and when examined with a Veilfire, will grant you a rune.

You'll be looking for a weird marking on walls or the ground and when you get close to them, you'll hear distinctive audio on the background. In order to discover and obtain the rune, you'll need a Veilfire torch. Close to every veilfire run is a brazier that only mages can light. By interacting with the Veilfire you'll light up a Veilfire torch. Use this torch to examine the mark to receive the rune and the trophy.

Here's one of the first locations and what to look out for.

Only mages can light the brazier.

Interact with the Veilfire once lit to get a Veilfire Torch.

Markings like these is what you're looking for. Examine them when you have a Veilfire Torch to receive the rune and trophy.
