How to unlock the Mercurial Magnate achievement in DRAGON QUEST BUILDERS 2 - Definitive Guide

While playing the Khrumbul-Dun chapter, I encountered and killed 3 metallic slimes in the mines without even trying to find them. Once I decided to make an effort to find the last two I needed for the achievement, I did it pretty quickly by running around in the tunnels surrounding the Old Lift fast travel point on the lower level. Once I found one metallic slime in that area, I left for a bit, slept, and did a story-related task. I then came back to the Old Lift area and quickly found another metallic slime.

When you fight them, you and Malroth will frequently miss and do zero damage. When you do hit them, you'll take off only one HP. Luckily, they only have a few HP. They will run from you, but just keep running after them and swinging your weapon, while relying on the occasional hit from Malroth, and they will die without too much effort. They are much more common and easy to kill than in the main-line Dragon Quest games in my experience. Maybe I just got very lucky, but hopefully not and this isn't too difficult for anyone else.

Edit with some further info: According to Kol Magius in the comments, if you happen to have the Poison Needle weapon, it kills the metal slimes very fast. If you don't have that weapon, you can look at their comment down below to see how to get it if you want to make the effort.

If I’m not mistaken, the Poison Needle works really well on the metal slimes. It seems like it always does one damage, and also has a chance to one-shot them. I’ve only killed four so far so I can’t guarantee I haven’t accidentally done something else to trigger this (or just gotten lucky). But I can say the slimes have been dying much, much faster the times I used Poison Needle than the times I used the broadsword.

I purposely pulled the Poison Needle out because it used to be useful on metal creatures way back in the day, DW3 I think? But I really was only hoping for the one-hit-kill. The 1 dmg per hit is a big bonus, if confirmed.

I consider this confirmed, I’ve killed six metal slimes with the poison needle and they all died really quickly with it. My impression was each hit gave 1 damage. The 6th one I started with the iron broadsword as a test, and the broadsword would mostly get 0s. Then I switched to the needle and was getting all 1s. So the only difference appears to be the weapon.

Thanks for the info Kol Magius. If you can tell me how to get the Poison Needle, I'd appreciate it. Is it something you eventually learn how to craft? I've yet to come across it, but I might not be far enough yet. Once I have more info, I'll add your suggestion to the solution.

Yeah, you’re right, I’ve been using it so much I forgot it’s not one you get automatically. You learn the recipe to craft it by defeating a big dangerous caterpillar in the bog in Furrowfield. If you happen to have it, it helps with killing the metal slimes, but if you don’t have it it’s probably not worth a trip to Furrowfield just to help with this one achievement.

I appreciate you taking the time to explain where to get it! I'll at least direct people to your comment in case they want to make the effort to get the weapon.

I'm not finding any metal slimes in the spots you mentioned - I've beat the game however. Do you think that matters?

I don't think that beating the game would matter, but I can't say for sure. Sorry to hear that you aren't finding any. Maybe I just got really lucky.

Just want to add my help to this. I had 2 defeated before leaving mining land. Went back (but before game ended) and only found the slimes in one area. Between the Old Lift and the Goodie Bag's sitting location. It's a hallway that goes right, left, left then right. Like a -u- kinda deal. To get it faster I pulled up a bunch of rail from the Old Lift and made a short track between the 2 rooms. Rolled over the monsters to see their spawn and if it had a slime, then jump out and stop. If not then continue on. It's a lot faster than sleeping to get them to respawn as they do that on their own once you get out of range.

I had trouble finding the metallic monsters at the endgame point even having looked at all the suggested areas until I found one on the "defiled isle", whenever I went back again afterward there was a spawned metallic without fail, made easy work of grinding the 5 needed..

Looks like the comment was removed, but the needle recipe is in Farrowfields under Pastor Als house on the cliff, dropped by a Super Strong monster (Killapillar).

Metal slimes stopped spawning in the Khrumbul-Dun lower mine level for me after I completed the story. However there is always a liquid metal slime near the tunnel entrance (the one with the talking regular slime out front) leading to the Rendarak area on Moonbrooke. I took it out with the Poison Needle, went back outside, saved, quit, reloaded, and it had respawned when I reentered the tunnel. Repeat until done.

There is a total of 2 per run start of old lift you will find one as stated in the guide but there is also one in the south east tunnel going towards old lift I already did this area. All I did was go back to my island then traveled back to khrumbrul till I got the achievement

Hey everyone!

I don't do a lot of guides but thought this would be a really good strat to share for this achievement. The other guide is good but has RNG involved which is never fun.

Please note this is for an area towards the end of the game.

From the above, go east and once the are opens up you want to go South East, you will go around a mountain and eventually come to a cave, inside the cave there is a guaranteed liquid metal slime spawn, so it's as simple as killing it, leaving the cave, save, reload and kill again to get the 5 kills.

Hope this helps someone!

You'll first encounter metal slimes in the mines of Khrumbul-Dun. I'd suggest defeating several of them here (only 1 spawns a day). You can also find liquid metal slimes in the cave to "hell" in Moonbrooke, on Laguna Perfuma, and can encounter a Metal King Slime on the Defiled Island. Defeat any 5 of these, and the trophy will unlock. They only take 0 or 1 damage, so I'd recommend having Malroth with you, and some people recommend using weapons like the Poison Needle, which have a chance to instantly defeat an enemy (you acquire this by defeating the giant caterpillar in Furrowfield under the mountain shack).

In Crumble Dunn, metal slime can often be found in the caves. It is better to kill him with a weapon forged from a recipe from a boss from the island’s past (the sting of a huge caterpillar). It deals guaranteed damage to metal monsters.

Metal monsters are found on islands that can be unlocked with hearts. You can also farm in Moonbrook. Video guide (en).

On the island of Crumble Dunne, near the teleportation point The Mashroom Room, there is a metal slime hanging around. kill, then swim to the Island of Awakening and from it back to Crumble Dunn and back to the same teleportation point and so on 5 times
