When you get to burnt-up town Melve and start roaming around you'll find a homie Ian. Talk to him, start his quest to find his brother (Brothers Brave and Timid), follow him out of town to a campsite where he'll hook you up with a free camping kit. take it, activate campfire and you're good


Alternatively, do what I did and go to Vernworth first without ever meeting this dude and spend three thousand gold on a camping kit from a merchant there

Use a camping set at any campfire to create an area you can rest at.
