Simple to do. I did this method through punch party (any level is fine) with four controllers and was mashing 
to jump on all controllers at once and it popped very quickly.
Too 100% confirmed this works I've even used ONLY the 3 controllers I connected after my original controller to make sure the progress was counting for the other controllers. Which it did.
