How to unlock the Keen Explorer achievement in DreamWorks Dragons: Legends of The Nine Realms - Definitive Guide

This guide can serve as a pseudo game walkthrough. When you earn this achievement, you will have earned all other achievements except for the dragon upgrade achievements. Luckily, getting crystal beacons will give you more than enough gems to fully upgrade all dragons.

You can earn 2 or 3 crystal beacons per level. The first 3 levels of every world have 3 beacons. The last two levels only have 2 beacons (they do not have a yellow crystal). There are 3 different types of crystal beacons:

  • Blue Crystal - You get this crystal for completing the level. The maps are linear and path is marked with green crystals.
  • Yellow Crystal - Once you get the blue crystal, you can replay the level and search for the alternate path. And alternate path is singular because there is only one alternate path. You will need all the dragon's abilities to open the alternate paths. I waited until I completed the game to try these but you could get this once you have unlocked all the dragons.
  • Green Crystal - Once you get the yellow crystal, you can replay the level in challenge mode. This will enable some modifiers to make the game more challenging. You will take the same route you took to get the blue crystal but the crystal will be green.
Other tips:

  • The get 500 blue/purple/orange gems require you to have 500 gems in your inventory. Luckily, getting all the crystal beacons will give enough gems to max your dragons AND have 500 of each gem left over.
  • If you get lost, after approximately 30 seconds, there will be a blue compass on your dragon pointing you in the right direction. This is very useful when going for the yellow crystal because the compass turns yellow to direct you towards the yellow crystal. However, it only turns yellow when you are close to or have passed the yellow crystal path. After every forced battle, the compass will point you in the right direction
  • Try to fly by as much as possible. Don't stop to fight any dragons and don't bother attacking any gems clusters. You don't need the gems. The game will slow you down with set battles and puzzles.
  • The healing mechanics are extremely forgiving. If you dragons are damaged or defeated, they will heal in the reserves. The only exception is in challenge mode when one of the modifiers is that your dragons don't heal in reserves. Luckily, there is a very forgiving checkpoint system.
  • In battles, I didn't bother to learn any combos or figure out which dragons were strong/weak against other dragons. It takes a lot of time to switch out dragons. I just spammed the X button. Plowhorn's YYY combo (which needs to be purchased) is very strong against certain enemies.
