How to unlock the Researcher: Rods achievement in DREDGE - Definitive Guide
I found a reliable way to get all research parts to complete this achievement, here is what i did:
!!!!(By this point i had unlocked the bait and explosives)!!!!
- Go to the merchant (any outside of Great Marrow)
- Buy explosives and the two baits she sells.
- Sleep until next day.
- Check if she sells research part. If not, sell back explosives and bait.
- Sleep until morning.
- Check if she sells research part. If not, buy explosives and bait. (By this point the research part should show)
- Sleep.
By now there should be one research part available to buy.
Just repeat the steps of buying, sleeping, selling back and sleeping until you see it.
I got her to reliably have a research part for sail following the steps above, and i bought the last 9 research parts i needed.
Hope it helps.
(It seems tied to either spending money or selling items)

Thanks a ton! This mostly worked, though it seemed a little inconsistent. I tried to do more testing to see what exactly triggered it but wasn't able to identify any consistent strategy. Of note, make sure you have plenty of money to burn for the research parts and buying/selling since you lose money every run.

Throughout your gameplay you will receive Research Parts. Many of these will be rewarded to you for completing tasks or side quests known as Pursuits, with others turning up while dredging or exploring shipwrecks and treasure huntng.
These Research Parts can be spent in four different tabs in your Research menu (Rods and Engines are available at the beginning, Crab Pots and Trawl Nets will be available once you are able to use them) Research Parts can then be spent on unlocking improved equipment in all four categories. Many of the rods will need to be unlocked to complete the main Pursuit of finding the five Relics, but unlocking faster engines will greatly enhance your expereince as well. The Nets and Crab Pots, while useful enough, can be left for later, in my opinion.
The trouble is that you will need a total of 62 Research Parts to unlock all equipment, and through my expereince of playing this game two and a half times through, I still needed 25 or so Research Parts after obtaining all the parts given through Pursuits, dredging in the five areas and pillaging every shipwreck and abandoned campsite. The Traveling Merchant does sell Research Parts every now and then, but they cost upwards of $300 so you may want to have extra money on hand and buy them whenever they are available.
If you are playing with the latest patch (1.1.0 released on 11 May 2023) you should be able to buy one Research Part from the Traveling Merchant daily, with a chance to buy two on some days. This was not the case before the patch and you would need to travel back and forth or Save, Quit and Reload in hopes a Research Part would be available. Now the only drawback is your wallet, so catch fish, make money, buy Research Parts and max out your research
You can also stock your last ten to twenty Research Parts and then complete each tab's unlock tree fully, quit without saving, then reload to spend the same Research Parts to fully max out another unlock tree until all four of these are complete.
Below are the 8 items you can unlock by spending 20 Research Parts in the Rod tab:
