How to unlock the Oomph, Uugh, Where is it? achievement in Duke Nukem 3D - Definitive Guide

I just though I'd add to these solutions that you can check your progress on this achievements (and all the others, of course) in the game. Just pause the game, go to 'help & option' - 'stats' - 'achievement stats'.
If you want to see how many secrets you got in a level you can (again) pause the game, go to 'help & option' - 'stats' - level stats'. From there you can browse through all the levels and see how many secrets you got, and a few other things.

Will it work if I repeatedly go back to the same level uncovering the same secrets over and over again until I reach that number?

If you don't want to have a computer sit next to you while you play, watch a video of the people with the highest score in the leader boards (points, not time) to get a higher score you need to get the secrets, so all the highest scorers will show you where all the secrets are on the level you want to play.

How many are there total in the game? Do you have to get all of them everywhere to get the achievement?

There's far more than 70 hidden areas but you just need to find 70 of 'em :)

I can personally confirm that any secret area discovered by one person in co-op counts for all players present. Played through episode 1 pretty much by myself with 3 others present and they all had around 40 secret areas after completing The Abyss.

This is a guide on how to find the official guide made by 3DRealms after October 2014 The reason for my solution is that the 3D Realms site got relaunched around October 2014 and all the old content got removed, including the excellent guide for Duke 3D that was hosted there. So the link posted here in the solution by NiteJokester OG doesn't work anymore.

Luckily the old site has been completely archived at https://web.archive.org. Go there and paste the old original link into the search field there.

http://www.3drealms.com/duke3d/walkthrough/

The site will offer you several backup dates. Some of them are not entire backups but I have found the last one to be complete. So when archive.org shows you the calender just pick the last date there (11. October 2014) and you will have access to the complete walkthrough. If you want to be on the safe side, as myself, you might consider PDF-printing all the single pages for offline use and conservation purposes.

Use THIS thread. You must find 70 DIFFERENT secrets, not 70 total.
