How to unlock the Damn, I'm REALLY Good achievement in Duke Nukem Forever - Definitive Guide
I don’t think a whole walkthrough is necessary, as the game is really not that complicated, but there are some things you might want to consider to make the game a little easier.
1. Ego-Caps: Try collecting all Ego-Caps on your way through (refer to DaShAg’s excellent guide for those).
2. Boss – The Doctor: You will most certainly not have any problems until you reach the first boss, the doctor. He will be sitting in his spider-like machine and attack you with his whole arsenal. What you’ll want to do in order to defeat him (again) is:
- When you enter the chamber where you are first attacked by those flying bombs, turn left to find the devastator (see 3. Devastator).
- When he attacks you with grenades, simply try to avoid them by running around the room or just walking a few steps out of reach.
- When he tries to recharge, hit the lever to prevent him from doing so.
- You will never want to be hit by his laser. If you’re lucky, you can take three hits or so on Insane. When he tries to hit you with his laser, step behind a pillar and do not come out until he stopped shooting. Also: you know that you are safe behind a pillar when you can’t see his red light in front.
then all that is left to do is attack him with the devastator, recharge ammo at the EDF-containers and keep shooting all your devastator has to give.
3. Devastator: When you find the Devastator at the doctor, never throw it away! Keep it until the level Tunnel Vision (at the end of this level, you will lose it automatically anyway). Until then you will always have the opportunity to refill your ammo at EDF-containers. Note: try to avoid shooting those flying brain-enemies with the devastator, as they will catch a rocket and throw it back to you, which is most likely to be an immediate kill. If you’re lucky, you can dodge the rocket or kill them before they throw it back. You might want to have the Freeze-Ray as your second weapon (see 4. Freeze-Ray for more info).
4. Freeze-Ray: You will find this one in the level Magic Carpet Ride and it is extremely helpful. There is a little trick you can use to make it even more effective: In the Extra Game Settings menu there is the option “Duke 3D Freeze Ray”, which will convert the Ray that the Freeze-Ray normally shoots into a ball of ice that is even more effective and reaches farther. The strategy is now to freeze the enemy, try to approach him quickly and execute him in order to refill all your energy. However, you should not try that when there are too many enemies. Should you be out of ammo with the Freeze-Ray, simply turn off the option and let the weapon recharge (or refill ammo at a EDF-container). While in the Extra Game Settings menu you will also want to increase the Head Scale option to 150% to increase the chance of making headshots. Both these options do not count as cheating and will not prevent you from achieving any of the achievements (also works for the normal game). Furthermore, try to avoid getting hit by your own ice balls that rebound from the walls.
5. Level: Magic Carpet Ride: One advice I can give you here is, when the flying brain enemies approach, shoot them with your machine gun (which you can also find on the magic carpet), but always only take one. It will be a total of five or so, but they will keep shooting the little guy until you hit them and he can’t die.
Also you must not be hit by the lasers in the level. If you are lucky, you will survive a hit, but most of the times being hit leads to an instant death. The lasers I had most difficulties with were the first ones in the spinning tube, but it’s actually pretty simple. When entering the tube you only have to go to the right side of the carpet, crouch, let the first two or so lasers pass and then move to the left of the carpet. They are also the last ones in the level.
6. Level: Teleportation Spire: This level sucks. There is this big room where a lot of enemies will teleport in. Although there is a Freeze-Ray in this room as well, I recommend you take the Expander, which can be found directly before entering the room. The Freeze-Ray is not that useful here, because there are way to many enemies and your buddy tends to shoot the frozen enemy before you can execute him. Also I suggest you take the first left after entering the room and pick up the Impregnator, as this weapon deals a whole lot of damage. When you are hurt too badly, take cover behind one of those giant pillars at the edge of the arena or behind the covered railings. Try to keep a distance between yourself and the enemies, because they are likely to kill you immediately when they punch you. Stupid pigs. Moreover, take out the rocket launcher pigs at the far left and far right ends of the stage as soon as possible when they appear (the one on the far right appears first. In the second wave).
7. Last level: Something I found very useful was to ignore all the enemies, except for those in the pit which you have to kill in order to proceed. But as for all the other enemies, simply ignore them, even those that try to prevent you from inserting the energy cell into your vehicle.
8. Final Boss: Here the easiest way to finish the boss is to drive into one of the alien’s legs, then turn around by pulling the handbrake (B) and drive over the spawning enemies. Then you will have to enter the alien. Do so and when you are inside go straight and – hallelujah – pick up the Devastator! And there is even an EDF-container to refill ammo. Could this be even better? Then just shoot the Alien Empress Ovaries until it spits you out again. When you’re outside again, enter your vehicle and repeat the first step, which shouldn’t be more difficult than the first time. When you enter the Empress for the second time, there will be flying brain enemies. I know what I said before about the Devastator and those enemies, but here I recommend you take your chance and just ignore the enemies, just shoot at the Empress Ovary that’s left and run in circles while doing so. This is a lot faster than killing each enemy with another weapon and shoot while they are gone – which would also be annoying because they keep respawning.
Edit 24/11/2014 (Thank you King Crepes!): "Just wanted to add that when you're in the pit in the last level and you're near the other moon rover, just take the expander! It's very useful because you can kill those flying enemies with only two shots!"
The only thing that’s left to say is that completing the DLC on Insane is way easier than completing the normal game on Insane, also because there are quite many levels where you do not have to kill a single enemy. It would also be really useful to install the game on your hard drive, as loading takes f****** forever every time you die. I don’t know if it’s just me, but sometimes when I die, I have a feeling that I have just died for no reason, which is kinda annoying. And never forget to follow the useful tips the game tells you during the loading screen, e. g. “Never forget to run away from explosions, especially your own”. Really useful stuff.
Hope the guide helped. Should there be any points left that require further clarification, feel free to leave a comment.
Cheers

Insane is unlocked by completing the game at least once on any other difficulty. After that step is done, I highly recommend that you discovered all the Ego cap rewards in the game, so you can start your Insane playthrough with a maxed out Ego Gauge meter. When you're ready to begin your Insane difficulty playthrough, you don't want to use New Game. Selecting New Game will reset and erase all of your Ego cap rewards. By using the Chapter Select, you'll get to keep all your Ego cap rewards for a maxed out Ego Health Gauge meter throughout your whole Insane playthrough, which makes Insane much easier. Unlike the original main campaign, this Insane isn't as tough, but there are some parts that might be difficult especially the new bosses if you don't have strategies to kill them. As you continue onward, the new powerful weapons added to the DLC will help you out. Not to mention that there are a lot of checkpoints. Once you've completed the game the trophy will unlock at the main menu screen as well as the other difficulty trophies.
Tips:
- Take cover behind crates, walls, etc to avoid getting shot from alien fire.
- Take it slow and don't go rushing through the chapters like Rambo. You'll die much faster that way and will see the long loading screen far too many times.
- Save your Beers, Holoduke, and Steroids and only use them when necessary, such as boss fights.
- Execute aliens when given the opportunity as executions will refill your Ego Gauge meter to 100% full.
- Search for the EDF crates/boxes for extra supplies such as a Holoduke and to refill your ammunition.
- Use only the pistol, shotgun, ripper, devastator, and Impregnader weapons as they will get the job done.
- After killing Doctor Proton, keep the Devastator and a Ripper as your guns all the way up to "The Burning Bush" due to the fact that there are a lot of ammo refill EDF crates after defeating the Doctor.
- Save your pipe bombs and only use them to kill group of enemies packed together or the stronger aliens. Using Trip Mines are somewhat pointless in this mode.
- Try to aim for the head on aliens as they die much quicker.
- Make use of strafing left and right for this helps you dodge gunfire.
- Try not to get melee attacked or grabbed by an alien on insane for this will greatly damage you near death.
- Some later chapters will have lockers that you can melee open to find items such as ammunition or special items such as a beer or a holoduke.
The Return of the "Duke 3D Freeze Ray" Cheat:
- Yes, the Freeze Ray gun can be found in the DLC. It's only obtained near the very end of the game on "Teleportation Spire". Once you begin the chapter and go through the door where the enemies will eventually spawn, look on the crate towards your left in front of you for the Freeze Ray. If you've completed the original game on Medium or higher then you should have a cheat in Extra Game Settings menu called "Duke 3D Freeze Ray". This cheat makes the Freeze Ray shoot ice projectiles that bounce from objects and deals more damage to the enemies. The Freeze Ray will lose it's ability to refill its ammo automatically but you can simply turn it off to have it regenerate the ammo again. Once it's fully charged, turn the cheat back on to continue freezing aliens. You can also use the EDF ammo crates to refill as well. This gun will make the very last two chapters much easier for you, especially on Insane difficulty.
Strategy to killing the Alien Empress:
- This is the final boss fight and it's too simple to defeat her. All you have to do is stay in the moon rover and hit her legs that glow red. It'll explode and then 1 to 3 enemies will spawn, so simply run them over. After you killed the enemies that spawned, return to hitting her in the legs again and rinse and repeat this another 3 more times over again. After you reduced her health down by 50%, you'll have to jump the moon rover into her "hole" (and be quick or her health will refill back to 100%). Once inside her, reduce the health of her "ovaries" by 50% with the devastator on the ground. Once you've dealt enough damage to it, she'll spit you out, so do everything you just did all over again for a second time; until you destroyed her second and last "ovaries". Now it's time to test her "gagging reflexes" by driving the moon diver into her month to finish her off.
