How to unlock the Gunslinger achievement in Duke Nukem Forever - Definitive Guide

In order to get this achievement, you must carry the golden pistol through each stage. It doesn't matter in what order you do the missions, but you must have the gun in one of your inventory slots at the end of each mission. It IS possible to sequence break and get his achievement before beating the final boss by finishing the last stage with the golden gun (it is given to you during the mission) and then going back and getting the gun when it is first given to you (see below) and doing the remainder of the levels. (Thank you AGAIN for the update, LAFTA).

The golden pistol is the first weapon you pick up after the introduction, and is given to you by the AI in the Duke Cave. You must take the gun to proceed. It is also given to you right before the final boss fight, after you lose all your weapons.

During the campaign, you CAN drop the pistol. You do not have to be holding the gun all the way through the campaign. As long as you pick it up again before moving on, you will get the achievement.

One thing to watch out for is hitting a checkpoint without the pistol and then dying, as all the pickups get reset. If this happens, you are in trouble. Therefore, I'd not recommend straying too far from it, or leaving it on the ground for too long.

On a tactical note, the pistol is a fairly decent weapon, and is good for getting head shots. It can kill enemies fairly quickly and has a comparatively generous amount of ammunition available to it. It can be a bit bothersome during boss battles, where it would be nice to have an RPG and a Devastator to avoid constantly running to supply drops. As mentioned above though, I would try and hold on to the golden gun as much as possible and not risk dropping it, as the bosses can be cheap and kill you quickly.

All in all, this is not a hard achievement, but does require some tactical decision making at times in terms of what the other gun you take with you is.

On a final note, there is always a rocket launcher near any given boss, so taking along an appropriate weapon (shotgun in tunnels, rail gun/Enforcer Gun in open areas) is usually a safe bet.

Good luck, and good hunting. Come get some!

Ant Tr4ckzZ, That would be fine, as long as you do actually start the chapter with the golden gun.

It's easy to finish with the pistol at the end of the game. Seeing as it's given to you at the beginning of the final battle. This won't get you the achievement.

I was curious, what if I were to load up the chapter before the boss battle in which I believe you start by default with that gun, do the level then automatically go to boss battle would that count towards it?

Munchmagic86, you have to make it through each stage with the golden gun in order to get the achievement. The only way to get up to the boss fight with the golden gun is to carry it through all the other stages. Just before the boss comes out, you drop all your weapons and then are given the golden pistol again. Loading up the boss fight and finishing the game will not give you the achievement.

There must be a check for each level complete with the gun I think. I'll confirm this when I complete the penultimate level this time through. I already finished the last level with it, so..

Confirmed. I only finished the last level with it on my first playthrough, then it unlocked before the final battle on the 2nd playthrough.

@LuchienChase. Not meaning load up the boss fight, I mean load up Blowing up the dam then playing through from there that way you go into final level with the gun

Munchmagic86, I've updated the solution to address this as per LAFTA's input. You can indeed load up the last level, play it and then play the rest of the game from the beginning and get the achievement. I hope this helps.

This must be glitched sometimes. i carried it the entire game, never dropping or trading it once. finished the game with it and watched the credits and everything and no achievement. I didnt even do any chapters out of order. beginning to end in order on normal difficulty, kept checking the gun THE WHOLE game, i was very aware of this achievement. finished last boss with gun!!! NO ACHIEVEMENT!!!

Do I really need to start a new save or can I reload a chapter and finish it with the golden gun?

To the best of my knowledge, it remembers each stage you have finished with the golden gun. Loading up individual chapters should work, as verified by other people in the comments.

The pistol turned out to be surprisingly good weapon. I used it as a primary weapon everywhere where I could to save rounds on the "main" weapon. The pigs could often be killed with a good headshot and if they got too close, melee worked well too.

Anyway, thanks!

Take note: Should you not finish the Queen Bitch level with the golden gun equipped, and you go back to complete that level again separately just as I did, make sure you complete the Strip Club level after it as well. Even though you don't have the gun on you at any point in that level, it still counts it as if you had it from Queen Bitch, or even if you did not. I spent a while going back through levels I was unsure of completing properly before doing this one and getting the achievement at the end of it.

Very important thing to mention!

Just found out that you don't need to carry gold pistol through all levels on the same difficulty level! You can do it on multiple playthroughs. Basically what I mean is that you can carry the pistol through 5 first levels on Casual, then 5 next levels on Normal and rest of levels on Insane (actually in any order) -- you will get the achievement anyway.

I finished my Insane run sticking to the golden pistol on all but couple levels where I've lost the pistol (it disappeared from the floor). So after I beat Insane, I replayed just those two levels on Casual and got the achievement. Moreover that saved me from replaying Bitch Queen and Forkstop levels on Insane (since I didn't care about golden pistol on my first normal run somehow).

That makes this achievement even easier. Enjoy your 50G!

Nice info! I "lost" my golden gun at the Brainking! Good to know I only had to redo those last levels on easy! Thumbs up!

You get the golden gun near the start of the game. To get this trophy you need to make sure it's in your possession at the end of every level. That means you can drop it so long as you make sure to pick it up again.

It's an accurate little gun so it won't handicap you unless you are playing on hard.

The Expanded Inventory option that lets you carry four weapons on PC instead of two on consoles doesn’t break this achievement. So feel free to use it to get this achievement more easily.

The pistol has low ammo capacity and a small clip size, but is a decent weapon if you’re good at headshots, so hanging on to it isn’t much of a handicap.

The gold pistol is Duke's own special made M1911. The only times you are able to get this gun is in the end of "The Duke Cave" and in the beginning of "Final Battle". For this trophy you want to carry the gun all the way through every chapter, from "The Duke Cave" to the end of the game, which is very easy if you're playing on Easy. I would not recommend it, but feel free to exchange your pistol for any other gun if needed and pick it up later again. But remember to always be close to it so you can find it again. All you want to do is to complete each possible chapter with it in any order you like. What you should do is to keep in mind that if you for some reason would swap your pistol for another weapon and happen to die or reload the last checkpoint, you won't have the gold pistol any more. Also, triggering a checkpoint while you don't have the pistol can cause the pistol to disappear. If you would happen to lose the pistol during the game you can go back to the chapter you lost it on via Chapter Select and continue from there at any time you want. When using Chapter Select you will always start with just the gold pistol, so you're good to go. After defeating the final boss the trophy will unlock.

The golden pistol is the very first pistol in the game, you need to leave it until the very end of the game, if by mistake you exchanged it for any weapon, it’s okay, take it back, the achievement does not imply that you will not let it out of your hands.
