How to unlock the Octacide achievement in Duke Nukem Forever - Definitive Guide

Welcome to the most annoying boss fight in the game. I wrote this guide after fighting the Octaking on 'come get some' difficulty. There are three stages to this boss. The first stage consists of the Octaking and respawning waves of three octabrains. The second is a more linear strafe and shoot section. The third, a simple just blow his brains out stage. Hehe brain pun.

Preparing for this encounter, you should be holding a devastator, 4 pipe bombs, beer, and a holo duke. There are ammo dumps for both ammo and explosives in the centre of the platform.

Step one is to kill the octabrains. Hide in the corner in a form of booth as it is more difficult for the octabrains to hit you here. DO NOT use the devastator as the octabrains will catch the rockets and throw them back at you, killing you very quickly. Instead, you want to throw a pipe bomb at one, and the moment it catches it, detonate it. It will take two pipe bombs to kill an octabrain, so you should be able to kill off two before making a run for supplies. Quickly resupply and dispatch the third octabrain, and then fire off as many devastator rounds into the boss as you can before the octabrains respawn. Then simply rinse and repeat. Don't forget you can use your beer to buy you needed time. There is a spare beer on the floor in the booth in the corner (where I advised you take cover).

Note that the octabrains don't actually come in waves as some people believe. they spawn on their own timers and so for this strategy to work you need to dispatch all three octabrains as fast as possible. Don't try to ignore the brains and fight the king, you will be overwhelmed in seconds.

Once the boss has reached about 50% of his health bar he will change his strategy. Octabrains will no longer spawn, and he will start throwing pieces of the generatot room at your platform. After he has trashed your platform and all of your cover, he will start firing large balls of ouch at you. My strategy here was to drop the holduke in the corner where the booth used to be, and shoot the boss without interuption from by the ammo box. This way you will be able to take off a large chunk of his health without needing to dodge or react to his moves. Once the holoduke runs out, dodge his plasma balls and continue shooting until he goes down.

After his little explosion scene he will begin to pull you towards him. If you get to close to him he will explode, killing you instantly... Don't ask how I know that :P So just stand by your ammo box and finish that persistant thing off!

You will not need to rapidly tap A at any point in this fight, rejoice!

The first section of this battle is by far the hardest. Once you get past it the boss should offer little challenge.

Cheers for that, once the Octabrains are out of the way it is pretty easy, but that first bit nearly sent me over the edge!

Yeah I'm playing on piece of cake too and I had to stop and look up a strategy for the first time ever on this game. But after reading your guide I got it the first time, thanks a lot because if I had to look at that damn loading screen one more time I was going to break the disc in half :o

Thanks for this, got it on my 8th attempt on hard , the trick was to get the small brains out of the way fast, and then once stage 2 begins make sure none respawned just before the phase begins, got caught when one respawned out of sight .

The Octobrains are WAY too cheap and overpowered. I wanted to kill myself after my 5th death, but I got lucky on attempt # 6........and I'm playing on Piece of Cake. REALLY wish I could use cheats so I could have fun

I made this video for the "Complete game on Insane" solution. But I figured I'd post it here too.

Apologies for the sound being out. Not quite sure what happened there. Check out my other videos for all the hardest parts of Insane!

This boss is the hardest boss in the game. There is however a strategy to make him a lot easier to beat. If you happen to have a Shrink Ray, an extra Beer and a Holoduke, it is much easier. All those things can be found in the secret closet (see Companion Barrel) in the chapter before this fight, "The Forkstop: Part 2". First, go pick up the Devastator in on the right side of the platform. Also, be sure to break the box next to it to find a Beer if you haven't got one already. Once the Octaking sends out his little minions, shoot them with the Shrink Ray and throw a Pipe Bomb at them to kill them while taking cover in the little shelter on the right side of the platform. If you don't have the Shrink Ray you can throw Pipe Bombs at them, but they will take more bomb than if they were shrunk. When the Octabrains are dead, start to shoot with your Devastator at the Octaking to make him lose some of his life. Quickly replenish your guns and explosives from the Ammo Crate and the pile of explosives in the middle of the platform for the next wave of Octobrains. He will continue to send out his Octabrains until he has lost about a third of his life. After that he will start to throw objects found around him at you. Take cover behind the railings to avoid getting hurt. Once every object is no longer available he will start to shoot some sort of electric pulse at you. If you aim right you can destroy those by shooting at the right spot of them. Just start to unleash the power of the Devastator onto him. If you have trouble destroying the pulse, you can try going around on the platform to avoid them. Now is a great time to use your Holoduke and maybe take a Beer unless you needed it earlier to make him lose more damage. The Holoduke will make you invisible, so the Octaking will be focusing on killing your Holoduke. After some time the Octaking will have lost all his life, and he'll crash onto a balcony. From here he can't hurt you. All he will do is pull the platform towards him using electricity. As soon as his health bar starts to regenerate, unleash hell into him with your Devastator and he will die.

Throw grenades at small enemies, shooting at the boss; when he has about 2/3 of his life left, he will stop calling small ones, which will significantly simplify the task.
