How to unlock the Rajani's Rival achievement in Dungeon Siege III - Definitive Guide
The way I earnt this was to switch to a single-hand stance (so shield & sword combo), and found that by using weaker, faster strikes I made more progress than the slower, 2-handed strikes.
I'd run upto her on the first phase, attack a few times then block, then attack again and block etc. etc.
In this phase she has 4 attacks; a 4-strike combo that you really want to block/avoid, launches a spear at you, does a spinning kick and lastly opens a blue portal on the ground that does serious damage. By standing next to her, all but the portal can be blocked, so take advantage and get ready to get your attacks in. If she opens a portal, simply roll away then return to her side and start swinging!
The second phase is definately more troublesome, as the roof collapses, thus blocking parts of the floor. Here, I blocked/rolled the blue fireballs she launches and weaved through her portals, got close and got 4 or 5 hits in before she teleported away. I was also able to use a few 'power' attacks (activated by RT), these were handy.
On my successful attempt, I used my LT +Y 'shield ability', and was never knocked down.
Hope this helps players choosing Lucas - I died about 10 times with the 2-handed stance, but beat Rajani on my 3rd single-handed stance.
EDIT: On my 2nd playthrough as Katarina, this is really easy compared to using Lucas. With Anjali as my AI, I just stayed back and picked shots at her from afar, whilst easily dodging her attacks.
I missed the opportunity to beat a boss using my default gear here, but others should be able to earn that here as well.
EDIT 2: Kronos2215 raised an interesting point - they state that they did this and the Cheev did not pop. The reason? Vampire attribute!
This is a great point, as technically it's NOT 'your' healing ability - but on the flip-side it does 'heal' you! Their advice is to complete the battle with it removed, and re-install it afterward.
First thing to mention is that the pews in the room can be destroyed and sometimes have green health in them. Using these DOES NOT void the achievement so don't worry about using these.
For her first form, make sure to dodge when she hurls the spear at you and maintain a distance as much as possible to avoid her spinning attack. With a melee character, you'll want to get in close, hit her a few times then roll away as her other ability is a spinning kick that can hurt.
Second form is the trickier part (at least I found it to be). Trick here is to deal as much damage as possible in short time to the boss. When you do enough, she will teleport away from you and spawn blue fire portals on the ground. DO NOT stand in these as they will tick your life away very fast. Also, be wary of the boss shooting blue fire at you. When you see this, dodge away immediately and make sure not to stand still. If it does hit you, it ignites the floor beneath you and will kill you very fast. Remember, you're not allowed to heal so avoiding damage is paramount.
It is confirmed you are safe to be revived by your partner, thus making this achievement a lot easier to obtain.
Hopefully, using these tips, you will get her down fairly quickly. When I did the achievement I used Katarina and I must say, her ranged attacks helped a great deal.
Missable.
Ranjani is found at the end of Upper Ravens Rill. Your best bet for this fight is to make sure that you have items equipped with the Vampire ability as this will allow you to heal without using a heal ability.
The fight with Ranjani is in 2 phases, first she is in Human form and uses normal attacks along with firing a bolt and a pillar of flames. The last 2 are easy to avoid by dodging. The second phase has her in Fire form, the battle field will be almost cut in half in the shape of a cross. For this section, Ranjani will teleport to one of the four corners and send out multiple bolts and pillars of flame. If you are aggressive and go straight up to her and attack, most - if not all - of the attacks will miss. Just continue to follow her around and attack.
Anajli is probably best for this fight as her Aura of Immolation will damage Ranjani and if you boost this ability with Cauterize, then it will also heal you and any companions in it. This with the items you equip with Vampire, should mean your health never drops below ¾.
Tip by Lukey52 - when fighting Rajani, just attack her, as when you die your companion will revive you and this doesn't count towards being healed. This will also work for I Could Do This Blindfolded.
