Making trap laden bottlenecks is the easiest strategy I found for this. I connected all the entrances and closed off the other passages so the heros had only one way to get into Gorgu's room. Because you can pick up your own people, it is a problem for the Heroes and not for us!
Toward the end (since this strategy also works for the feeding Gorgu to the max achievement), I was pretty much camping the middle to end of the twisty gauntlet with ease.
