How to unlock the Bolter Hunting achievement in Dying Light - Definitive Guide

Later on throughout the story you'll be introduced to bolters. You'll be able to then hunt them, and a new icon will be added to your map. Find one of those icons near a safe house. Go there, sneak up behind it, kill it, then run back to your safe house. Sleep till morning, then night (one whole cycle), and repeat as the bolter will have respawned! Can do as many times as you want to, with little threat as by the time you're seen by a volatile you're already back in the safe house!

Edit: Just wanted to say that with the camouflage and execution skill you can kill the bolter instantly without him noticing you. Thanks Liliryn Dres!

Does this require sneaking, or can you just shoot or grenade them?

You don't have to sneak, but as soon as you start attacking the bolter, odds are it will run so you have to be confident in your ability to kill it quickly.

There is a safe house directly west of the tower in the slums...very slightly south....it has a skull on the map directly north of the the safe house. Go here and wait till night by sleeping. Hop over the north fence and you will see a yellow bus turned on its side. There will be a bolter on the other side guarunteed everytime. He will be under a light eating a body next to some train tracks....EVERYTIME. This means hop the fence and go 30 ft and kill the bolter, run back to the safehouse, wait a full day cycle by sleeping twice and do it again. Took about 3 minutes to get this.

Easiest and quickest method. Decent way for some quick Power XP too. Thanks!

^ This is the safe zone Res is talking about

External image

Where the blue marker is on the map, is the closest safe zone to a Bolter feeding ground. It's less than a 10-15 foot walk from the safe zone.

Remember the Bolter gets frightened and will take off. Make sure your light is off and you're crouch walking towards it. One melee hit and it should be dead. Loot the Bolter for the tissue and run back to the safe zone. Sleep until morning, then sleep until it is night again and their should be another Bolter in its place.

Goodnight and goodluck! toast

Any idea how far you need to be into the game for the Bolter to show up? I have this safe house and if I go out at night, it's not yet there.

@MrTechMgrGuy You can't miss the Bolter part because it's part of the main story. So if you don't want to read my spoiler, just keep playing and you'll know when you've got to the right part.

@MrTechMgrGuy Yeah, I can tell you but it'll spoil the game a bit:

I got this one later on in the game. Easiest way I find is:

Level up your skills so that you can use camouflage to disguise yourself so that Zombies can't see you, & also camouflage attack so that you can attack without being detected.

Once you have these skills make your way over, at night, to a bolter feeding ground marked on your map as a blue skull. Find a nearby zombie, preferably alone or away from others, kill it and use your camouflage ability by pressing and holding cn_X whilst looking at the corpse. (top tip you don't need to wait around for Kyle to finish wiping zombie guts all over himself, as soon as the little counter is full and disappears you can walk away.)

Now you should be able to just freely stroll up to your bolter, who will normally be crouched down over a corpse feeding underneath a street lamp or something similar, whack him in the back of the head with a good solid weapon and walk away undetected (not sure if you can use the take-down ability on these things but give it a go!). If for any reason you are detected or if there is a volatile nearby then get ready to grapple hook yourself out of harms way. If you don't have the grappling hook ability yet, which you should do, then run like the wind.

Now make your way over to the next bolter feeding ground and repeat the process. If for any reason your bolter isn't there, you've killed them all or just can't find him there then go to your safe house and sleep. I believe a good couple of days need to pass before they'll re-spawn at night though.

Repeat these steps and you should have the trophy in no time at all. Remember you can kill them in the old town too!

So do you have to kill them in a single hit?

No, no, not at all. As long as you kill them it'll count :-) Just make sure you're quick about it because they really shift once they get going!

Bolters pop up early in the story, and you will encounter them at night in designated areas of the map (clearly marked by their ugly face icons on the map). Their icon will also appear on your minimap as a blue face icon if you are within range of them. They are very easy to kill, however they are generally surrounded by a small to large group of Volatile, they will run at the sight of you, and they are very fast (far from uncatchable, but having a horde of Volatiles chasing you doesn’t help).

Now the trick here is actually pretty simple: you can sneak up on them () from behind pretty easily, and if there are any Volatiles within line of sight of them, tossing fireworks to distract the Volatiles won’t cause issues with the Bolter, allowing you to sneak up on them, swat them a few times with your weapon of choice, loot them for some nice blueprint material and run away. Rinse and repeat four more times to unlock this achievement.

This trophy can be earned as early as after completing the "Siblings" main story quest.

In order to earn this trophy you must kill, not "catch" 5 Bolters. Bolters are the green mutated zombies that move like a monkey; they also flee from you if they notice your presence. They can only be found at night, and in certain areas of the game. They can only be found in the area, which is found on your map. When you travel to this area, you will see a blue icon. Use Survivor Sense with to find the Bolter. It's usually guarded by two or three Volatiles, and easy to spot because it's usually on the ground eating flesh. Also be sure to have your light off from being detected by both the Bolter and Volatiles. When you're near a Bolter, kill it with a strong melee weapon and flee the scene. They're very easy to kill but very easy to scare off as well so be quick. Travel to 4 other Bolter locations or sleep two full days for the Bolter to respawn again. The best way to kill them is to make sure you have the "Camouflage" skill, that way you can smear some zombie juice on you and nothing will notice you while you have it on. It lasts about a minute so you can walk right up to the bolter and smack him, then walk right on out of there without anything hurting you.

(The image above shows a Bolter feasting on human flesh during the night).

After killing your 5th Bolter, the trophy will unlock. You can check your Bolters captured progress from the Main Menu of the game: Under "Extras", followed by "Personal Statistic" under the "Bolters eliminated" stat.
