How to unlock the Mouths Wide Open achievement in Dying Light - Definitive Guide
So I made a quick guide showing how I unlocked my achievement.
Be aware, there are actually 3 Volatiles in the cave but I had already killed the other two in the same way.
Basically when you notice night is almost at an end, find a volatile. As soon as night is over they start getting burnt by the sun and run. Just chase one, throw stuff at it and as soon as you are close enough slash at it. They are very fast, but easy to follow as they are glowing. I got it first time I thought of it and tried it.
Volatiles only come out at night and are displayed on the mini-map. They are extremely hard to take down with standard weapons so the use of traps makes this a lot easier.
The Tower from the beginning has electricity traps at the entrances and they can be activated when you stand next to them. Look for a Volatile next to the tower and make him chase you back to the trap. They sometimes back off if you are to close to the entrance. As soon as one comes up activate the trap and do additional damage with grenades, molotovs, throwing stars,...
The trap alone won't kill it mos likely.
Just south of the tower is a sage house that's beside an apartment block, the way in is through a hole in the roof, for the setup make sure that you have the UV light as your "thrown weapon" as this costs nothing and does damage
Opening the door and wandering in the "fenced" area starts attracting the volatiles, but if needs be jump onto the roof and wander around, once one is near you drop down and enter the door, the volatile will walk in and stop at the door, use your UV light to burn them and if you want to do this slow just stand inside and they won't enter while you're burning them, to speed this up you'll use some resources but hitting them with melee will bring them inside the top room. While they jump in, drop to the stairs and you'll be safe while you use health, or hit them on the legs - keep using the UV torch and wait to recharge it once it's fully used
If they back off just chase them outside and lure them back in again, keeping your torch light on helps to attract them more
As an addition to this, while you're backed into the stairs they won't be able to "see" you, so you'll earn agility by "escaping" from the volatiles, by running around and attracting them I earned lots of agility, meaning that I got from level 8 to mid-way through level 10 just by moving and "escaping"
I'll edit this and put a map & captures up as soon as I can...
These enemies are only available at night (aside from inside certain quarantine zones) and are very lethal if you're not careful. They are, thankfully, clearly seen on your minimap as red triangles with a large white cone (field of view) in front of them. You can also see them clearly with Survivor Sense (hold ), giving you the upper hand. Although they don’t seem to care too much about your flashlight, they can sniff you out, respond to any noise you make, yet take a few seconds to respond to you visually (they become noticeably agitated and then start chasing you).
I don’t recommending confronting these one on one for quite a ways into the game. However if you get cornered, use any traps you can to take out chunks of their health, meaning ambushes are also a good idea (be aware that traps will likely draw unwanted attention from other zombies, so make sure it hits the Volatile). They are warded off, and occasionally stunned by flares, which can also give you a few free shots on them, however with early weapons you will need many shots and some luck to take them down. The video below, courtesy of Maka, shows how to take one down.
A Volatile is a very fast and strong zombie that only appears at night. Killing them early on in the game is tough as you simply won't have the weapons to do enough damage to them, they can also kill you in one or two hits depending on your health upgrades. You can however, use the electric fence traps to kill them. Simply lure one into one and it should take most of its health, then you can either finish it off with melee or wait until you can use the fence again. The tower in the slums has some electric fences by the doorways and enemies cannot enter these areas. You can simply lure a Volatile into that fence and then run into the tower so it cannot hurt you, followed by going out of the safe zone to lure the same volatile into a fence. Later on in the game you will have very powerful weapons, which can one hit kill Volatiles.
This can also be earned if Volatiles kill themselves on accident by falling off of rooftops. This is more common in Old Town, as the buildings are much higher. This is completely random and shouldn't be happening anyway but it can happen when the Volatiles fall off the edges off buildings. Usually, when they are chasing you and other zombies bump them off the edge.
