You should already start with some battle arts when starting the game for the sword.
You increase the number of the battle art to master when you activate in battle. You just need to activate it a certain number of times depending on the battle art to master it.
For Example, I used Falcon Flurry on the swords which requires 3 bravery to use and 70 activation to master.
You also get usually two news battle arts when acquiring a new weapon so you can ultimately choose whatever battle art you want to master first.

Battle arts are the abilities you have when you press R1. You just need to use one enough times to master it.

This one will naturally pop for you later on in the game, if you find yourself sticking to a preferred weapon. I got this with the spear, because the
