How to unlock the Deep One achievement in Escape Dead Island - Definitive Guide

There are 4 underground areas, which are inside 4 mysterious hatches that are around the island. You probably found them in your first playthroughs, and remember that they required "alpha", "beta", "gamma" and "delta" keycards. Well, with the DLC installed, they just open.

If you have a save in the middle of a playthrough, you don't need to start a new one for the hatches to open. Just make sure that the DLC is installed (you'll see some new options in the main menu if positive, as ShutTheCakeHole has commented) and you'll be able to access the new content (thanks to Darth Chimp for the confirmation).

You'll find a couple of hatches little after starting the game, but in order to access them, you need to progress in the main story until you have the flashlight, which is needed to enter the hatches.

After getting the flashlight, keep progressing a little more until your mission is to get the third of three key cards to the security room. Your mission then will be "Reach the Helipad".

On your way back from Crown's Estate headed to the Helipad, you will cross a tunnel between the Airfield and the Geopharm Labs Exterior. As soon as you cross that tunnel, go forward, and take a right as soon as you can. There will be your first hatch, which is the main hatch with the DLC mission. I don't know if this hatch is required for this achievement, as it isn't "secondary", but you have to access it anyways, so do it. That will net you an achievement:

Escape Dead IslandLab RatThe Lab Rat achievement in Escape Dead Island worth 36 pointsFind the underground labs

Complete the tasks inside this hatch, or go outside again, as you wish (I recommend to complete it now). Once you are outside, keep following your objetive, but, when you reach the "Jungle" zone (the one with the two corpse piles), you'll take a slight detour.

Follow the river down, and it will lead you to the path that goes back to the beach. When on the beach, go left, and just after passing the blue container, behind a rock, you'll find the second hatch. Go inside, pick the +1 Medkit, and now, follow the objective marker to the Helipad.

After the elevator sequence, follow the next hallway and you'll see the third hatch in front of you. Hard to miss. Enter and pick the Walloper weapon, netting you the following:

Escape Dead IslandLil SluggerThe Lil Slugger achievement in Escape Dead Island worth 16 pointsAcquire the walloper

Keep progressing. Don't forget to kill 10 enemies from a distance (say... 25 or 30 meters) with your recently adquired weapon for another achievement. Check my guide on that achievement for details.

Escape Dead IslandHail MaryThe Hail Mary achievement in Escape Dead Island worth 48 pointsKill 10 enemies at long range with the walloper

Complete the Geopharm Labs mission, and your next objective will be going to the Marina. Do that, and when you reach the storage room where the next item is, don't enter yet. Go to the red fence at the back of the Marina, pass through the hole and go to the end of the shore. There's the fourth and last hatch, and your achievement.

Also, inside is Crown's Audio Log #11, required as a part of another achievement.

I am really trying to understand where this "starting point" is located at because all the hatches I see require me to have a key card to open and there is no mention of this in your guide. How do you open the beginning hatch? The starting point in the guide requires a gamma key card.

Once you have the DLC installed, the hatches can be opened without finding any cards. I believe that you have to start a new game to use the DLC, if you just continue an old game the hatches remain closed.

I did try that, no go. Erased all previous data and re-downloading the DLC. We'll give this a try. On a note, I went to the first available hatch (mission 3) with no flashlight. Don't know if that is a factor on opening. I knew I would not be able to go down. I guess I will find out. Frustrating.

Just for reference, I was half way through my first ever run through of this game when the DLC was released, once installed, i could access all the hatches without needing to start a new game, so for me, i did not need a new game to get the DLC to start

@Darth Chimp oh, great to know, thanks. I added it to the solution, giving you credit, of course.

@FELDGESCHREI: Yes, I had the same issue and found someone else confirming it's a known glitch if you install and the DLC after or during mission 9 when the crates fall on the beach. Apparently that causes the lab to not be able to be opened. I'm hoping staring a new game after going through the others will still give the achievement. I will confirm when I get that far.

For the record: you need to unlock all of these in one playthrough so if you're unlucky like us, you need to do another run to get them. I'm not patient enough to bother with 2.5 playthroughs so I'm very much done with this game.

I'm confused by the comments. You can't do this in new game+?

The amount of backtracking and planning you have to do in this game is insane, fast travel to major points would've been nice

Figured it out. Did not have the DLC loaded. Reloaded and then restarted the game. Now, you will know you have the DLC loaded because on the menu screen there will be an option (press X) to adjust DLC stuff. After that, play to mission 3 and open the hatch on the beach. Will need flashlight to even go in.

There are four underground areas you'll have to venture to. You will need to have progressed far enough in the story to have obtained the flashlight to enter these areas.

  • Geopharm Labs - near the lab is an entrance. If you're facing the entrance to the labs, the path is behind you to the left.
  • Helipad - this is in an obvious spot right before you get to the helipad.
  • Beach - on the beach near where you first start out on the island
  • Marina - down near the water you'll see a body pinned against a pole by a car. Right there is a hole in the fence you can duck down through and find the last entrance. NOTE: You'll need to have the gas mask in order to reach the Marina.

I don’t recommend going through the DLC in new game+ mode; it’s impossible to get into one of the bunkers (on the beach). I recommend starting with a new save.

When you pick up the hook in the barn, you can return to this bunker through the hole in the fence; I went around the rest right after I picked up the lantern. Combined NG+ and trophies from the add-on.
