This can only be done in arcade mode. Even if you play all home version levels consecutively it would not count.
You will have infinite continues that restart you on the current levels.
I would recommend doing this at the same time you do a run to collect all fairies in the game, because the bosses are much easier to beat when you have a few extra lives.
