How to unlock the Isn't this the way to India? achievement in Europa Universalis IV - Definitive Guide
Start playing as Castile.
Hopefully you can ally yourself with both Portugal and Aragon, so France becomes less of a threat. Either way you can most likely get this achievement before you enter one of the great wars that decide the faith of Western Europe. (I wasn't that lucky) if you inherit Aragon early you might go for creating Spain otherwise simply ignore that you can get this as Spain.
Put your focus in adminstration. You want to reach adminstration 5 so you can choose your first idea.
Choose Exploration Idea group and change focus to diplomacy. when you researched the second idea, you get the ability to hire explorers and conquestors.
Hire a Explorer, put him in charge of a fleet of at least 3 ships containing either Light or heavy ships. (galleys and cogs don't count). I prefer to use Heavy ships even if they are slower, Lightship is better off producing trade power and income. Heavy ships is useless unless your are in war, so they can spend time exploring during peace time.
Send the explorer west on exploration until you can explore the Caribbean coast. During the exploration of the Caribbean coast you will receive this achievement. ie when you discover the islands where Columbus went ashore.
Note that before this happens you will get the discovered the new world event and gain 50 prestige. This even is unrelated and will come to the first countries crossing the ocean. I think Castile get it even if Portugal beat you to it.
Keep in mind that coreing provinces cost adminstration and making peace deals and changing culture cost diplomacy both of those will slow down your progress towards sailing west. be patient, you will have plenty of time for those after you secured the best path to America.
There is no extreme rush unless you want Cape Verde, which is Portugal favorite island to colonize. so if you end up in war it's no disaster. When I got this I had annex Granada, Fought France and claimed 3 Provinces, Fought England/Portugal, liberated wales and claimed 2 provinces, inherited Half of burgundy union and fought a war against morocco and Tlemcen and claimed another 2 provinces. All except the first war was as due to allies starting the wars. so the year was 1480, which is quite slow...
