How to unlock the Cut Your Losses achievement in F1 2012 - Definitive Guide
People seem to be having some trouble unlocking this,so I will share how I got it, this isn't guaranteed to work every time, but it did for me.
Firstly it was in the second season of career & I was the first driver for HRT. On the first race of the season I qualified first & won the race so that I would be ahead of my teammate 4-1 in the teammate challenge & so long as you are winning the teammate challenge you will remain the number 1 driver.
Then I qualified ahead of my teammate & crashed out at the first corner of every race, I also changed the R&D path from Balanced to Aggressive at the start of the season, I don't know if that matters or not.
Then on about the 15th or 16th race I got an email from my engineer asking me if I would like to cancel the R&D due to poor performances the season, I selected yes & got the achievement.
I hope this helps.
Edit
VulturousPiano adds if the achievement fails to unlock after accepting the Email, you should set a lap time in practice & fast foward to the end of the session & it should unlock.

For my achievement, I did a "Long Race Weekend" for every race. All I would do is set a time in each session at the start, press pause and choose "return to garage", and then "skip session". Quick and easy.
Note that this was on easy, and if it was rain affected and then dried up, I would set a time later in the dry to ensure I was quickest in every session
I started the career as Caterham and qualified on pole for every race, and won every race. After this, I chose to move to McLaren as their #2 driver. (I'm a McLaren fan first...achievement hunter second )
For my second season, I again qualified on pole for every race and won every race. At the end of the season, i stayed with McLaren and I was made an "equal driver" with my team-mate.
For my third season, I again qualified on pole for every race and won every race. After the Hungarian GP, I was made #1 driver on the main career menu (when you are compared to your teammate), but I kept getting emails stating that we were equal !!
However, after Monza, I had an email from "Andy Knight" stating that the season hadn't gone too well and asked whether they should stop R&D and concentrate on next years car. (LOL at the fact that we had won every race, but nevermind...)
I chose to end R&D, went to practice, set a laptime, and then skipped the session. Achievement popped.
Note that I also set Autosave off before doing this and then reloaded the game, and choosing not to abandon R&D to ensure I got the parts for the rest of the season.
Unfortunately I have to wait until season #4 before I can get the "New Direction" achievement, but for F1 fans like me (and those who didnt appreciate these achievements upfront), I am just putting my experience down to say that it can still be done with the better teams, as I should imagine the same process of #2, equal and #1 driver will apply to Ferrari, Red Bull and possibly Mercedes and Lotus.

*Just a little addition to the guide above*
When I chose Red Bull in 2nd season in career I wanted to go for 15 pole positions and winning the constructors championship. Of course you need to achieve good results then. After race 14 I got an e-mail to cancel R&D and to focus on the car for the next year till now. So even if u do good results during race weekends you will receive this e-mail to earn the achievement. Move forward to next session and finish it and you will also get the achievement.

After you have got "New Direction", a few races later the team will send you another email asking you if you want to end R&D on the current season's car. Select 'Yes' to the email when the prompt appears. The trophy will pop once you have completed the next qualifying session.
Same as "New Direction" but you will have to end R&D. Reffer to New Direction for more details.

Same thing, you need to be the number one pilot
