How to unlock the Cut Your Losses achievement in F1 2012 - Definitive Guide

People seem to be having some trouble unlocking this,so I will share how I got it, this isn't guaranteed to work every time, but it did for me.

Firstly it was in the second season of career & I was the first driver for HRT. On the first race of the season I qualified first & won the race so that I would be ahead of my teammate 4-1 in the teammate challenge & so long as you are winning the teammate challenge you will remain the number 1 driver.

Then I qualified ahead of my teammate & crashed out at the first corner of every race, I also changed the R&D path from Balanced to Aggressive at the start of the season, I don't know if that matters or not.

Then on about the 15th or 16th race I got an email from my engineer asking me if I would like to cancel the R&D due to poor performances the season, I selected yes & got the achievement.
I hope this helps.

Edit
VulturousPiano adds if the achievement fails to unlock after accepting the Email, you should set a lap time in practice & fast foward to the end of the session & it should unlock.

For my achievement, I did a "Long Race Weekend" for every race. All I would do is set a time in each session at the start, press pause and choose "return to garage", and then "skip session". Quick and easy.
Note that this was on easy, and if it was rain affected and then dried up, I would set a time later in the dry to ensure I was quickest in every session

I started the career as Caterham and qualified on pole for every race, and won every race. After this, I chose to move to McLaren as their #2 driver. (I'm a McLaren fan first...achievement hunter second smile )

For my second season, I again qualified on pole for every race and won every race. At the end of the season, i stayed with McLaren and I was made an "equal driver" with my team-mate.

For my third season, I again qualified on pole for every race and won every race. After the Hungarian GP, I was made #1 driver on the main career menu (when you are compared to your teammate), but I kept getting emails stating that we were equal !!
However, after Monza, I had an email from "Andy Knight" stating that the season hadn't gone too well and asked whether they should stop R&D and concentrate on next years car. (LOL at the fact that we had won every race, but nevermind...)
I chose to end R&D, went to practice, set a laptime, and then skipped the session. Achievement popped.
Note that I also set Autosave off before doing this and then reloaded the game, and choosing not to abandon R&D to ensure I got the parts for the rest of the season.

Unfortunately I have to wait until season #4 before I can get the "New Direction" achievement, but for F1 fans like me (and those who didnt appreciate these achievements upfront), I am just putting my experience down to say that it can still be done with the better teams, as I should imagine the same process of #2, equal and #1 driver will apply to Ferrari, Red Bull and possibly Mercedes and Lotus.

Tried this as above but got relegated to joint team leader after Canada so couldn't make decisions. Did u qualify on pole or last??

I qualified on pole on most of the races & was ahead of my teammate everytime, I also won the first race of the season, I dont know if that matters or not, but that put me ahead 4-1 on the teammate challenge screen for the whole season.

I was with Ferrari, my stats were 1 win, 13 poles, 2 fastest laps and 12 DNF, i got the option to end early on race weekend 14. Just want to point out that any races you crash out, try and take your team mate out with you to help you keep a head of him in the team mate challenge.

Great solution. Followed everything and worked and was with Williams.

Only thing different is that I had to set a lap time in practice after I answered the email and then just fast forward time to the end. Like you have to with the changing r&d paths one.

No. I only did long weekends after I replied to the emails. As long as you are number one driver then you will get them.

Ok thanks buddy, 1 more thing i just realized is that I am with McLaren, Hamilton is my team mate and hes obviously gunna score points, will this effect me being the number 1 driver?

It could do. Just make sure that you stay ahead in the team-mate challenge.

Just to butt-in, i went almost the same path as Samphaa and managed to get the R&D ended but not that early since I received it at Singapore race. "I think that it's best to skip the upgrade challenge during long practice that it may consider like a failed upgrade just to speed things up". I don't know if that can affect it since I got the contract to change the R&D path twice in the same season.

If it's not speed things up, then my result will be almost the same with x Payload x.

So easy with HRT. You can skip every quali session if you get pole, win and fastest lap on first race. Because the best the AI can get is a loss of 3-2, because they never score points, get a podium or fastest lap. So you always retain number 1 driver. Just pause quali and skip session and in the garage before race just chose retire from session.

Hooded Claw's comment about moving to HRT as first driver for second season speeds this up so much. Finished the game today using this tip, thanks so much.

Do you have to do long weekend to start the r&d?
Thanks :-)

Just to confirm, I am behind in the "team mate challenge" 6 races in, with Lewis Hamilton as my team mate. Gunna try winning a couple of races and see if I still get the option to end r&d early. If not i'll have to try with a poor team in season 3. Will let people know if it works out

The teammate challenge chart doesnt indicate who is the number 1 driver, its only a guide.
For example im in my first season at race 13 and im leading the WC while my TM has only 6 points im leading the TMC 5/0, yet im still only equal status(after being upgraded at about race 10 from number 2 driver).
If you start as the number 2 driver you have to work up to equal then number 1 status. If youre the number 1 then it doesnt matter how bad your TMC chart is until youre told in an email they are demoting you.
Also check the hub, it says there what your driver status is. dont look at the TMC chart.

*Just a little addition to the guide above*

When I chose Red Bull in 2nd season in career I wanted to go for 15 pole positions and winning the constructors championship. Of course you need to achieve good results then. After race 14 I got an e-mail to cancel R&D and to focus on the car for the next year till now. So even if u do good results during race weekends you will receive this e-mail to earn the achievement. Move forward to next session and finish it and you will also get the achievement.

After you have got "New Direction", a few races later the team will send you another email asking you if you want to end R&D on the current season's car. Select 'Yes' to the email when the prompt appears. The trophy will pop once you have completed the next qualifying session.

Same as "New Direction" but you will have to end R&D. Reffer to New Direction for more details.

Same thing, you need to be the number one pilot
