How to unlock the New Direction achievement in F1 2012 - Definitive Guide

In order to get this achievement you must be the number 1 driver at a team, so the is only possible in at least the second season of career.

When you start a season as the number 1 driver you will get a email talking about the R&D objective, then on around the third or forth race you will get another email asking what R&D path you want to choose for the season, simply reply to the email & choose a different R&D path than you are already on & you will get the achievement

Edit
If you are having trouble unlocking this Ratpoizen mentions in the comments; Ok the achievement unlocked for me but not at the point where you press the Y button to reply to Andy Knights email and select a different path - select a different path (Balanced or Aggressive) for your email reply, then make sure your next race is a Full Race Weekend (change it on the settings tab if you've been doing Short-Weekend or One-Shot Qualifying Short Weekend. Go to your next race - Bahrain in my case, set a practice lap time, fast forward the time and the achievement will unlock when Quali 1 starts.

The achievement unlocked as soon as I changed paths on the the 3td or 4th race, It was an email asking what direction to go with R&D for the season, so its not really Mid season, im sure that confuses people.

I am in my second season in McLaren after winning all races for them and winning both championships.. the game won't give me #1 status, equal is all I get.. it's annoying, I really have to drive a third season now to got those 2 achievements on my 4th season...

You will get an email at the start of a season saying that the number 1 driver of a team has chosen the cautious/balanced/aggressive path. Then, later on you will get an email when you become number 1 driver asking if you want to change the path. (NOTE: To become number 1 driver you will need to consistently win races and beat your team-mate every race. You need to beat him 6 times before the 10th race or you will get equal status & no trophy). Make sure to get this before 'The Grass is Greener', as again this will disable this trophy. When you get to the e-mail, press to reply to the email and select any option that's different to the current R&D path (it's usually on Balanced)

The trophy will pop when you complete the next qualifying session.

In order to change R&D paths you MUST be the 1st driver. Equal status will not allow you to do it.
To be the first driver you need to beat your teammate at every item on the "teammate challenge". You will get reviewed 2 times - At the end/beggining of each season and at race 10 - Germany. You will need to go from 2nd driver to equal and then to 1st. So it may take a whole season. If you Change teams make sure you will get Equal or 1st driver, or you will need to go an entire season to get 1st driver and be able to do this.

When you are first driver the team will ask you what path you want to take. Change it and after the next Race with and R&D objective (the little gear icon on top of the race name) you should get it.

To get this achievement you need to be the number one pilot in the team, which means at least it will drop in the second season in Career mode
