How to unlock the On the shoulders of giants achievement in F1 2017 - Definitive Guide
1. Go to Practice 1 - Do 1 lap of Track Acclimatization, then Qualifying Pace.
If you perfect them you will get 50 RP each, plus some points for Misc objectives.
2. Now tab right and skip to Qualifying. (You could get 10 RP each for starting P2 & P3 but with loading times its not worth it)
3. Completing one-shot qualifying should give you 85 RP.
(Note, this will decrease slightly as your car gets better)
*Edit - 4. I suggest getting a Grid Drop Penalty by going to Laptop and tab right to Vehicle Management. Select the '+' sign by any of the power units (or Gearbox). You will now start the race in 6th place. Overtaking the other cars will give you an extra 50RP at the end of the race. (I wish I figured this out sooner. 50 extra RP per race is huge).
5. Now start the Race... Do 1 good lap, then pause & Simulate Session.
You will get 1st place giving 55 RP + 1st driver bonus of 25-40 RP.
(If you do all 5 laps you will get 100 RP but again, its not worth it).
Now for spending points (and not wasting them on failed upgrades). - each time you have 1000+ RP to spend, wait until after the race when you can press to start the Next Weekend.
Instead - Quit to Main Menu, press and turn Auto-save OFF.
Go back into Career & purchase any upgrade you like and proceed to next weekend.
If the engineer tells you the upgrade failed just dashboard & quit the game. (If its good then don't forget to save your game soon after).
Now restart the game and make sure to turn Auto-save OFF again (it resets to ON). Repeat the above steps until the upgrade doesn't fail. I chose a different upgrade each time if it failed but I don't know if its necessary.
*Edit - for Major & Ultimate upgrades you can try this method at the very end of a Season, Advancing to next weekend will take 2-3 weeks.
I hope this helps getting faster RP and not wasting it on stupid RNG.
Durability 17/23 (the update that popped the achievement)
Chassis 21/21
Aerodynamics 21/26
Powertrain 13/15
(Competency 12/12)
Jay ITFC's solution of investing in the efficiency upgrades will help, but I'll also add here that the Durability and Competencies upgrades do not count towards this achievement, so you'll have to invest into the Chassis, Aerodynamics, and Powertrain upgrades. There are 62 upgrades in total for these three sections, so to get 75%, you'll need to purchase 47 upgrades.
Minor upgrades cost 1000 resource points, Major upgrades cost 1500 resource points, and Ultimate upgrades cost 2000 resource points, but with the aforementioned efficiency upgrades, you can reduce these costs by up to 50%.
There's no fast way to earn resource points, so your best bet is to complete as many Practice Programmes as you can. Occasionally, you may earn Sponsor bonuses of 750 resource points, and after the end of every season, you'll earn a set amount of resource points, depending on how well you did in the season.
It took me 4 and a half seasons to get this achievement, so just stick with it, and you'll be fine.
I had 49 upgrades from Chassis, Aerodynamics, and Powertrain and still no achievement so I decided to work on the durability (yellow) upgrades. Lots of people (yourself included) claim that these are not necessary for this achievement but guess what . . . . . as I unlocked the 21st Durability upgrade (21/23) the "On the shoulders of giants" achievement popped.
Now, the only thing that you and I have in common is that we both had 80 upgrades installed (you had 23 Durability + 47 from Chassis, Aerodynamics, and Powertrain while I had 21 Durability + 49 from Chassis, Aerodynamics, and Powertrain). This maybe coincidence but it's food for thought.
The fact remains that no one really knows exactly what 75% is. There was a guy on another forum that had 100% of Chassis, Aerodynamics, and Powertrain upgraded and still hadn't unlocked it. He finally got it after buying a few Durability upgrades.
There are other possible explanations, the achievement could simply be buggy or some upgrades could be worth a higher percentage than others. If people share their progress in the comments we could find out more.
I'm not trying to rubbish your solution I'm just trying to contribute so other people are not misled as I was.
Here are my R&D stats at the time I unlocked the achievement:

If you take EVERY upgrade (including Durability, Competencies, and the Efficiency/Quality Control upgrades), there is a grand total of 127 upgrades. 75% of this is 95.25, so we'll say that you would need 96 upgrades to reach 75%. At the time I unlocked this, I had 86 of these upgrades installed. I wouldn't have got the achievement if everything applied.
If we take away the Efficiency/Quality Control upgrades, this would leave us with 97 upgrades. 75% of this is 72.75, so we'll round this up to 73 upgrades. At the time of unlocking, I installed 77 upgrades. However, I applied 3 upgrades at once before going to the weekend that unlocked the achievement, so I had 74 beforehand. It may be possible that Durability and Competencies do count, if Codemasters' math is sloppy.
If we now take away the Durability and Competencies, we're left with 62 upgrades. 75% of 62 is 46.5. Rounding this up, we have 47 upgrades. I got exactly 47 upgrades installed when I unlocked the achievement.
So honestly, it depends on whether Codies are any good at math. :D
Durability upgrades do increase the percentage, now i dont know whether they counted before or not but they do now. The competencies don't count.
My personal path towards gaining so for this achievement is to perfect the practice programs except race strategy, pole position in one shot qualifying and then change an engine component to get a grid drop penalty. Do 1 lap of the race to get into a decent lead and then simulate session.
All in all that's 6 laps per track And around 400 xp, skip the invitationals once you have done 20.
I currently have 5 in durability, 14 in chassis, 18 in aerodynamics and 15 in powertrain. That's 52 upgrades. That is about 81% of the 64 upgrades that are needed for the achievement, yet the tracker says I'm only at 56% of the way there, which comes down to 36 upgrades...
In the below screenshot, CHASSIS, AERODYNAMICS and POWERTRAIN averages to 77,41%
So my theory is that this achievement only counts progress towards CHASSIS, AERODYNAMICS and POWERTRAIN. I would advice to start unlocking upgrades from this section first. Again, this is not a definite solution, but just an advice from my own experience.
(This guide will also help with the 'Some Assembly Required' achievement)
1. Go to Practice 1 - Complete Track Acclimatisation, Tyre Management & Fuel Saving programmes.
Perfecting these will gain 50 RP each. Also, completing team objectives will max the points you gain through the weekend.
Points break down: Session participation +10pt; Track Acclimatisation +50pt; Tyre Management +50pt; Fuel saving +50pt; Laps completed (10 max) +10pt; Team Obj - 25pt max; Discipline (pen free) +10pt; R&D Obj. +10pt.
N.B. It is possible to complete ALL programmes in P1 (track dependent) saving some time.
2. Go to Practice 2 - Complete Race Strategy & Qualifying Pace. Same as P1, finish any remaining team objectives (potential for up to approx. 305 RP per weekend from the programmes and objectives).
Every point counts!!
3. Skip to One-Shot Qualifying, qualify on pole.
- Points break down:
Session participation +15pt; Result vs Car Performance (exceed Exp Position 1-5 places +50pt); One Shot Qualy +10pt; Discipline +10pt
Max points is 85 for Qualy.
4. After Q, go to Laptop, tab right to Vehicle Management. Select '+' symbol next to any of the components (or gearbox) to take a Grid Drop Penalty.
5. Race. You will start the race in 6th place or lower due to grid drop pen. Overtaking other cars gives a bonus 50 RP per race which comes in very handy.
- Points break down:
Session participation +25pt; Clean lap % (100%) +25pt; Finish Position (P1 start to P1 finish gets +25pt/Starting down the grid gains +50pt; Discipline +25pt.
*1st Driver Bonus RPs: (w/15% bonus) by
- Practice Session [P1 & P2] (1st Driver) - +53pt(max)
- Qualy (1st Driver) - +11pt(max)
- Race (1st Driver) - +18pt(max)
Weekend Total = 626 RP (approx.)
Spending points efficiently (i.e. combat failed upgrades).
- I tended to try and save RPs over a few weekends & build up how much upgrades I could buy at the same time. Wait until after the race when you can press X to start the Next Weekend.
N.B. I highly recommend buying the Efficiency upgrades first, then 2-3 Quality Control upgrades. Personal choice if you go for Powertrain, Chassis or Aerodynamics first.
Before going to next weekend quit to Main Menu, press Y and turn Auto save OFF. Go back into Career & purchase any upgrade you like, then proceed to next weekend.
If the upgrade fails, dashboard & quit the game. Do this until the upgrade works & remember to save the game at the next available moment. Restarting the game, turns Auto save OFF as it resets to ON, so be careful.
I would also recommend completing some of the Competencies - including 20 Invitational races - as this will reduce the time for Major/Ultimate upgrades by half, from 6 weeks to 3 weeks. Also, completing 60 races as 1st Driver, will gain you 15% bonus RP per race.
Don't worry about Durability dept, focus on the other 3.
Hope this guide helps in some small way towards the two upgrade achievements, this will take some time - as I said it is a very slow process having to harvest RPs- at least 4 or 5 seasons maybe more, so good luck!
Update.
Got the achievement at Spa in S5 as per the screenshot above 👍
Go to Practice 1 - Do 1 lap of Track Acclimatization, Fuel Saving and Qualifying Pace. As soon as you set a Qualifying Pace lap pause the game and skip straight to Qualification. After Qualifying I followed the above guides to get a Grid Drop Penalty and then of course complete 1 lap of the race and used the Simulate Race option from the Pause menu.
This is the basic steps you follow for every race.
First I unlocked 15/15 Powertrain after 4/5 Cost Cutting.
Next I unlocked 26/26 Aerodynamics after 4/5 Cost Cutting.
This put me on 52% Achievement Progression.
Next I focused on Durability and unlocked 13/23 which gave me 78% Achievement Progression at a general pace of 2% per upgrade. The final 10 upgrades didn't affect the progression bar at all which had me worried but as soon as I upgraded 23/23 the Achievement popped and jumped from 78% to 100% complete. Just to note also, I had 1 upgrade in the Chassis Department as shown in the photo below.
So Durability does work and also not one of my 23 upgrades failed so they seem like a certified pass at only 500 each. You won't need to worry or waste time using the Auto save method to reduce the chance of failure.
Hope this helps and speeds things up for anyone working through this pretty long Achievement. I unlocked it this morning giving me 1000G. All I have left is 10hours of F1 2020 and I will have done a Decade of Formula One games to 1000G ^_~
MISSABLE
In Career Mode you can upgrade your car with Upgrade Points which are earned by completing Free Training, Practice Programmes (during Free Training), Qualifying and the Race itself. These points can then be spent towards upgrades. This trophy is missable because if you skip all free trainings and qualifications, you won't earn enough upgrade points to develop the needed 75% of the upgrades and you will have to start all over in a new career.
Between races when you open your laptop, go to the 'Research and Development' tab with and select 'View R&D Tree' with . In the following menu you can select upgrades that will be developed by your team outfit's R&D employees. The menus will look like this:
Note that it will take up to a couple of in-game weeks for an upgrade to get developed but they can fail too so please be aware of that.
To get 75% of the upgrades you will need to amount a lot of upgrade points during your career. Therefore it's recommended that you don't miss a single session between Free Training, Qualifications and Races and make you sure you complete all of the practice programmes during Free training as well. It's also recommended to buy the small nodes that will give you discounts and a lower chance on failures before you do any of the main upgrades. This may seem counterproductive at first but it will save you a lot of resources in the long run. Doing all of the above it will take you somewhere between 4 to 6 seasons to get enough upgrades for this trophy.
Although the trophy states you need to get 75% of all the upgrades, it's unclear what exactly accounts for this 75% as the trophy pops at different times for different people. The most educated guess we can make is that some of the upgrades are weighted and count for a higher percentage than others. Either way you don't have to worry if the trophy doesn't pop for you when you think it should, just keep buying upgrades and it will pop eventually.
It is the overall development of all branches that is 75%. My trophy dropped when the engine and wear departments were pumped to 100%, and the aerodynamics and chassis were approximately 48 and 52%. So I think there is no difference what to develop. But I advise it evenly, since the balance of the car is better. And if the tops have no difference, then it will be difficult for a teammate from the middle peasants and outsiders of that season to score points, which will affect the trophy for the constructors' championship. For me, Alonso only began to consistently get into the top 10 by the 4th season...
To speed up the process, I recommend simulating a race.
