How to unlock the Popularity Contest achievement in Fable III - Definitive Guide

You can interact with everyone in this game. Talk to anyone, and do a touch expression (whistle, chat, hero pose, dance, etc.) by pressing and holding "A" until the relationship bar at the bottom is maxed out. The person would give you a quest. The quest would usually be a fetch quest (bring your dog to the area, dig a spot and find an item for the person) or a courier quest (bring an item to another person). You must return to the quest-giver upon completion to turn in the quest, and he or she would become your "friend" (see relationship status at bottom of screen).

Do so to 20 people and this achievement will unlock.

Note that soldiers and children do not give quests even if you max out the relationship bar.

[UPDATE]
ta slane added the following details:

"You should try to do this before you become king/queen. Once you do people either already consider you a 'Friend' or higher or the 'Fear'/'Hate' you, which means you gotta do alot of work to get 'em to neutral and then make 'em a friend.

So do this before heading to Aurora to save yourself time and a headache."

Added by P00rman30:

"If you do become queen/king and everyone is your friend/best friend
Simply do some evil things to bring people back down to neutral and then stay in one city and get as many relationship quests as possible. I found that 10 is the max I could have at one time. They normally will send you to the same areas so you can complete multiple quests at a time. I did this yesterday and it took me roughly 2 hours for the achievement."

Do they all have to be friends at the same time? Once I hit 10 or so I started loosing them as fast as I made them so I gave up.

Instead of doing 'evil things' you can easily transfer some money to or from your treasurey to change your morality.

Even with top morality I found a couple of guys, especially in Brightwall that was neutral. They were carrying boxes up and down from the Academy. Also when you enter the Academy you should find quite a few that are neutral.

I'm a little confused. Under the stats menu it says I have 75 friends and that I have done 35 relationship quests but have not gotten the achievement. How can you tell how many friends out of the twenty needed you have?

After spending a couple hours doing this achievement I have a few thoughts. First, it seems like the cities where you have not either kept your promises or made a decision as king/queen have a LOT of neutral villagers. I had not yet made my decisions regarding Brightwall or Dweller's Camp and had many neutral villagers. Second, maybe I was just dumb at the time, but constantly check your quest list on the map. It makes it much easier to see what to do and where to go. Lastly, the digging fetch quests are sometimes strange (for me at least) in that I would dig up the item, but could not return it. Perhaps because there were multiple items? Anyways, hope these few tips help. Great guide Optimus!

*Spoilers*

Just wanted to add a little note to anyone who might be struggling with this achivement. I haven't even got it yet(i only have 2 achievements left to get... this and the weaps one) but i know exactly WHY!

My second play through was a good playthrough(im an evil player) but i was greedy at the same time because i was only doing the 2nd playthrough to get this achievement and the 'Tough Love' one. When i say greedy i mean i set all my businesses and rents to 'highest' to try and raise the cash to save the people. When i came to trying to get this achievement last night i was doing the quests and making friends and i noticed every time my money ticked up... i lost some friends!

So to help you along the way dont set your rents up in anyway... hell for safe measure i've sold all my properties to ensure i get it lol! This obviously works in retrospect if people are becoming your friend too easily(and your not getting quests etc..) set your rents to neutral.

Hope 2 things now... 1 that i'm right and 2 that this info helps... :D

Good guide guys,

Rossco!

@ "Gewehr Mags"
I'm getting exactly the same thing. The only thing i can think of is that it's glitched because i took a game update AND got the DLC halfway through my savegame. Yes i know this was a massively stupid thing to do [FACEPALM]. I'll round up the other achievements i have to get first and then i'm going to have another go. Failing that, i'll erase my savegame and start another playthrough just for that achievement. I will post an update to let anybody else having this problem know how to fix it.

First, make sure you repair all houses you own or sell them. Sent rent to zero. That should help you not to lose people. I kept going up and down in friends - would say 16/20, then 18/20. then 17/20, then 16/20. I figured it's because all my buildings were in disrepair so they started to hate me again.

I recommend going up to Neutrals, getting 10 quests. Then doing all the quests without turning them in. Then turn all in at the same time, hopefully the same area. Then, go to another area with new Neutrals and get 10 more, and repeat. This way no one has a chance to start to dislike you.

My progress resets all the time. I gained around 8 friends and it says 1/20.

hmmm... my advice: Do this in a town where you don't own any property. Even though my morality is almost 100% good and I have all my properties at the lower rent setting, for some reason people fear me in that town?!
You have to have 20 friends at the same time.

It's 2020, and i just spent 2and a Half to 3 Hours Completing this.

Here's how:
You will want to be in a New Playthrough, preferably before you go to Mourningwood.
You must COMPLETE Brightwall's Reliquary, and Have the Friendship Pack chest unlocked.
Start in Brightwall, i noticed your Clothes will help increase Interactions Faster. Get as Many villagers from Neutral, till they ask you to do a Quest (usually in Dweller Camp or Mistpeak).
Save up 10 + Quest, go to Mistpeak... Do those, then Dweller camp... Do those.

Now, this seems to be where others have Issues. When you Return to Brightwall, after you Return the item/deliver, you MUST interact with the NPC Until it Maxes Out the Friend Bar (you'll get a Prompt on screen).
Repeat for 10 more NPC's, in either Brightwall or Dwellercamp, just Fast Travel to each. But Always MAX OUT Friendship Bar after you Deliver on the Quest.
I had 2 go back to "Neutral" cause i chucked the wrong interaction... So i had to do Another. Basically, do At Least 20 before you leave for Mourningwood, easy Achievement.
(After you become Ruler, super Difficult and Buggy Achievement)
About 2-3 hours of work.

As you probably noticed, Fable 3 in its current state has many glitches. The strangest thing keeps pushing me towards this achievement. I adopted 4 children, and when I visited them, our relationship was "Love". As mindphluxnet said, they count towards the 20, but you easily can make more from the situation.
Interact with your kids. After a few actions (doesn't matter if it's a good or bad interaction), the relationship state will be "Happy" instead of "Love". Probably a bug causes it, but you can turn that to your advantage. Interact with your "Happy" children and soon they will ask for a small gift to increase your relationship with them. They ask for Teddy bear, Ragdoll, Porcelain doll, Toy gun, Toy bow, Toy sword, so stuff for children. Make sure you have all these items (just buy it whenever you see one, stealing and searching cabinets also help). Complete the quest by giving the wanted item to the child - your relationship status won't improve (that's the bug), but you still finish the quest and get +1 towards the achievement. You can do this as many times as you like, if you have patience, you can get the achievement in about 20 minutes, with only the cost of some dolls.
Tip: adopt more children so if you run out of the specific item one asks for, you can go to the other one and try his/her quest, hoping that he/she will ask for an item you already have.

Edit: I noticed that if you quit the game, this progress resets, so this must be done in one sitting.

*Edit (2011.03.) - If you vote negatively, please add a comment describing the reasons. In my solutions I always try to write clearly. In this particular solution, the first phrase refers to the "current state of the game" as was in October, 2010. The solution was made then and probably it will be outdated in the future as the developers fix the bugs. However, I do not wish to delete this, so please don't just judge negatively without actually reading the complete text here or without adding a comment describing your reasons. Thank you.

DigitALxBullets: in my experience, it is not true. What I meant in the guide, that was after saving of course.. Since this is not the natural way of making friends in Fable III, the fact that it resets, was "normal". However, as this all was more than 1,5 year ago, I cannot guarantee that the things that I wrote in the guide are still in effect or are still in the same way as they were before :) It was written just after the game came out.

I did many many relationships quests (over 60) and filled up each frienship bar so that the friendship wouldn't deteriorate to the point of losing them... the progress count never even popped up! Then I went to some of my adopted children in Brightwall and kept doing a good interaction until they wanted a gift. Gave the same two kids gift after gift (I have tons of stuff in my inventory from playing through the game and buying a lot of stuff at the shops), the counter popped up each time and I finally got my achievement!

Thanks! I was getting so frustrated!

This is really just to add to and clarify Rondund's solution. I had a huge amount of trouble trying to get this one later in the game. By far the easiest way to do this is to start a new game.

Play through until you have access to Brightwall for the first time. Quickly do the Reliquary quest to get the friends pack and don't buy any property. Run up to every one in Brightwall and and shake their hand until they give you a quest. You can load up to 10 friend quests at a time.

Go to Mistpeak valley and and do all the quest requirements.(You can see current quests and where you have to go by pressing Y on the main map). Then go to the Dweller Camp and do the rest. Head back to Brightwall after completing everyone's requirements and find each person you had talked to previously.

You should have ten friends now but I found that sometimes I would only get 9 for doing 10 quests. Load up ten more people you are neutral with and repeat. If you run out of people in Brightwall head to the Dweller Camp.

IMPORTANT: After you have become friends with someone you will only just be into there friend meter. This decreases over time and if you want to maintain friends until you can reach 20, you must do another positive expression after you have completed their quest. This will boost their meter high enough to last until you can complete 20 friends.

*This method should take about 2- 2.5 hours to complete from starting a new game.

Good tip! But to make friends, you'll need to buy the friend pack on the Road to Rule, and that one is only available to those who have done the Reliquary Quest, so you'll probably need to do that one anyway.

BTW: I followed your method and it worked perfectly! It can be a pain in the ass sometimes to search for the dig spots, but after a few quests you'll get the hang of it and you'll learn where the items are hidden.

Takes an hour or two. but this method guarantees the achievement!

You can check your active quests with Y on the map in the stupid hub thing BUT you need to complete the mercenary quest before this feature gets unlocked. It was super beneficial for me as it helped me track which quests were completed and made the sequential tracking way less annoying

I found if you activated more then 5 friend quest at the same time, from the same area, a lot of them goto the same area, and are the same, so it is easier to do the quests in bulk

Achievement - "Popularity Contest"
Description - "Make 20 Friends"

Its a straight forward achievement that caused me a lot of grief. Luckly I found a little way to easly get this even as a king/queen. First of all, I would like to say if you are just starting Fable III, do this quest before you become king/queen to make this as simple as possible. Just make the neutral bar fill up with one held, good expression and then do their quest. Rinse and repeat 19 more times for the achievement. However if you have already made it to ruler of Albion, just hire a ton of nannies. Nannies always spawn as neutral to you so just adopt orphans and put one in each house to spawn the maximum number you can. Do the expression and the quest and they count towards your achievement. Now you can only have so many orphans at once (8-10 I think). You can safely fire the nanny, which will also return the kids to the orphanage, without losing progress on this achievement. Wait a little bit, then go back to the orphanage and re-adopt. Now I don't know if putting the orphans in the same house as before will spawn the same nanny,so I would avoid it to save time just in case. Just find the new nannies and do their quests.

(Another small tip. While waiting for the orphans to get to the orphanage, run around the Bowerstone area. I ran into a couple people who were still neutral with me, especially the "Factory Supervisors". Just look for people with their heads down and that are slowly shuffling their feet.)

All right this is no doubt a tedious achievement, but is not bugged. To get this you have to have 20 friends ALL AT THE SAME TIME. To do this you will have to do the quests and such, but to keep them as friends long enough to reach 20 you have to make sure they're happy. Do this by lowering all rents on all houses to lowest and all shop prices to normal; you will still lose friends occasionally but at a much much slower rate. Even with this it takes a long time to obtain so make sure to do relationship quests in bulk so you'll be more likely to get the achievement all at once then risking losing it over time.

I'm not sure if it is bugged for rulers or not so to be safe do it before hand. Though this takes awhile it is a great way to get guild seals because of all the meeting people, mini quests, and enemies you'll fight while fetching. Thanks to this I got the Digger achievement and had enough guild seals for The Resistance also.

Okay, if anyone else got as frustrated as I did with this (due to your friend count constantly go down thus making it seem impossible to get this) this is what I did...

I found was to adopt all the children from the orphanage. when I had adopted all of then I notice that my "friends" staid at 16 all I did from that point on was do 4 other friend quest and bam achivo... hope it helps you guys

The easiest way for me was follow Steelarx idea. You should do all 20 friends at the same time, to keep the friendship bar as right as possible.

After became a King, I walk around the castle and talked to all my servants until start a Fetch or Courirer quest. Then when I got 10 quests, I went to my Sanctuary and opened my Quest list on my map view. There I could fast travel to the locations needed for the quests. They were usually the bottom ones. Looked for hidden itens, delivered some packages and then fast traveled back to my Castle.

Completed my quests talking to my servants and, right after, interacted with them to raise the friendship bar to the highest point, to give me time to start another 10 quests.

It took me 1 hour to finish all the 20 fetch/courier quests but then I got the achievement without start a new game.

This achievement was starting to drive me mad so i thought what if i try offline and to my surprised it worked! heres what i did .... (I had finished the main story when i did this and was king )

1. disconnect yourself from xbox live on the dashboard
2. Boot up the game load your save
3. find people who have a neutral friend bar ( i used brightwall ) or use the child Adoption method.
4. do 20 Fetch, gift or Courier quests offline and you should notice it register every completed quest ( you can have all 20 activate at once if you want but that might be confusing so i did 5 then cashed them in and found another 5 etc. )
5. ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED!

i think the problem is the game gets confused when online and mixes the achievement tracker and game stats like total quest complete etc and stops it from registering properly.

it took me about 1hr and 30 min to go from 0 to 20 doing this method

Hope it helps!

***How to get this achievement without worrying about 'losing' friends***

I recently unlocked this achievement whilst at the last part of the rulings section of the game, before the battle begins. I assume that this will work at any time during the rulings half of the game.

Go to Bowerstone Castle. There you can find a large number of servants and chefs to befriend. There are well over 20 within a close proximity of each other, meaning you can start a number of quests at once and knock them off a bunch at a time. Most of them will give you quests to the same few areas.

I found that these people would stay as my friends regardless of how much time passed. I never had to interact with them to 'keep' our friendship or raise our friendship bar.

**NOTE: Guards and people in fancy clothes cannot become your friend. Only slaves and chefs (that I found)

If you are an evil character and you are encountering the problem of villagers running away screaming in terror, the fastest way to increase your morality is to just donate money from your personal treasury to the royal treasury. Then go to Bowerstone market and change the rent and prices on all owned buildings to 'low'. This will make most of the villagers neutral to you.
Pick several villagers at a time and interact with all nice expressions in order to trigger their friend quest.
This goes a lot faster with a handful of people at a time, as the villagers will send you to:
-Millfields most commonly for a delivery quest (surprisingly the delivery location is almost always in the same spot).
-Industrial most commonly to dig up a buried item (also same area).
-Old Quarter for delivery and dig spots.

As you complete these quests, fast travel back to Bowerstone Market, turn in the handful of quests, interact with positive expressions to make the friend meter turn green and then proceed to pick up the next handful of relationship quests.
This will probably take you about 40 mins to an hour to achieve.
For evil characters, you have to make sure you are not killing any villagers throughout the entirety of these quests or else risk being hated and losing friends.

If you are already the ruler of Albion and you own the Traitor's Keep DLC, the prisoners walking free can be used to gain this achievement. Starting from zero, I was able to befriend 15 cons, and finished up using the 'Nanny trick' detailed in one of the above solutions to finally bag the achievement.

I had a minor issue where one of them disappeared and the breadcrumb trail just led me from one entrance of the keep to the other in one large circle. If this happens, don't fret. Chances are the prisoner has been put into one of the locked cells on the upper floors of the two cell wings, and it is still possible to finish their quest by talking to them through the bars of their cell.

This is a rather easy achievement, but may require some time. And when you do it, as the others say, do it in bulk.

The best time to work on this is right after you get a few expression packs and you'r e in brightwall (i did it after making my promise with the dwellers). Simply run around and get and accept requests from the villagers after making them like you by doing good interactions (dancing, tickling, you name it). it should only take two charged ones to get a request. The maximum requests you can have at a time is 10.

Once you have ten, set out for the first one. You'll realize that some of the quests (if done in bulk) pop up right by each other. I had three dig spots without moving, and 3 people standing on the beach waiting for a package delivery (courier).

After you do all of the quests, return to town and talk to the people, and they'll become your "friend". after you've finished all of the quests (there and back) find another 10 people to befriend, their quests, and as long as the game doesn't glitch and no one de-friends you, -DING- achevement unlocked.

^^I recommend not doing people your already friends with again, because then after the quest you'll become "best friends", which normally doesnt help for your achievement and may waste time. AND to keep your friends happy and stay listed as a friend, try setting some of your rent or store prices lower.^^

The easiest way I found to do it was by going to aurora almost all of them there are neutral and by doing one expression and then the quest they became your friend. Most were digs spots or giving an item to someone in either the city of aurora or shifting sands. One time I got 3 done In the same spot so it's quick and only took about 45 minutes.

For some easy - and pretty permanent - friends, just adopt all the children in the orphanage. It's not expensive and you'll have less friends to grind!
